For several days, one spruce in this line of four leaned over at a very odd angle...and on the fourth day it was lying on the ground - which shook all the snow from its branches...too late to do it any good.

European water vole ~ From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_water_vole ~ The European water vole or northern water vole, Arvicola amphibius (formerly A. terrestris), is a semi-aquatic rodent. It is often informally called the water rat, although it only superficially resembles a true rat. Water voles have rounder noses than rats, deep brown fur, chubby faces and short fuzzy ears; unlike rats their tails, paws and ears are covered with hair.

In the wild, on average, water voles only live about five months. Maximum longevity in captivity is 2 and a half years.

Appearance ~ Water voles reach 140–220 millimetres (5.5–8.7 in) in length plus a tail of 55–70 millimetres (2.2–2.8 in) of this. Adults weights reported are variable. It is possible for large, optimal adults to weigh as much as 225 to 386 g (7.9 to 13.6 oz) However, these are peak weights. Elsewhere the mean body mass has been reported as 60 to 140 g (2.1 to 4.9 oz), although this figure includes immature water voles. The minimum weight to successfully breed as well as to survive winter is reportedly 112 g (4.0 oz) in females and 115 g (4.1 oz) in males. As a species the mean body mass is claimed as 140 g (4.9 oz).

Overall, European water voles are a uniform dark brown colour, with slightly paler coloration on the underside. Their pelage is quite thick and they are furred over their entire body, including their tail, unlike rats. Their dark colour allows them to blend in well in the densely vegetated areas they inhabit.

Taxonomy ~ The binomial applied to the water vole is Arvicola amphibius, it was formerly known by the junior synonym A. terrestris. The confusion stems from the fact that Linnaeus described two species of water vole on the same page of the same work. Those two forms are now universally considered the same species. It has been recognized as A. amphibius (Linnaeus, 1758) because the first source to unite the two forms that Linnaeus had treated separately into a single species chose A. amphibius as the valid name. The species is widely known by the synonym A. terrestris which for many decades was treated as the valid name.

Some authorities consider the southwestern water vole (Arvicola sapidus) to be the same species, but this is now generally considered to be distinct.

Range ~ The water vole Arvicola amphibius is found in most of Europe, Russia, West Asia and Kazakhstan.

We found this Water Monitor Lizard chilling out in the deep shadows of some overhanging branches. It was a really hot, bright day, affording the opportunity to under-expose the image, but retaining enough light to minimise noise...

SUP'ing the Cornwall Canal with my dog Misha. This is paddle 30 of the 100 paddles project for 2016. As the summer heats up, I'll have more opportunity to get out on the water and reach my goal.

This is Florence just before she disappeared under the fireplace this morning. She has a habit of clambering under the fire grate then spends 10 minutes meowing her little heart out, one of the few times she makes a noise! Fortunately it is not a real fire and there is only carpet under there. We used to have a hamster (a good 10 years back) and he used to roam around the house and this was his way of getting under the floor boards so we wonder if she can still smell Tigger?

And spilling over on the grass.

The sun was rapidly going down in the Florida Everglades. This Green Heron was the recipient of some of the last light of the day as it sat there in the darkness. After spending several days in the field, I realized that the Green Heron was one of my favorite wading birds. They are so beautiful with so much personality.

View from the cable car, going down from the volcano, on the area of Teide National Park :)

Teide National Park, lies in the middle of Tenerife, at an altitude of 2,000 m, is centered on Mount Teide, the highest mountain of Spain (3,718 metres high). Pico Viejo, also included within the national park limits, is the second highest volcano in the Canary Islands with its 3,135 m peak. The park has an area of 18,990 hectares located in the municipality of La Orotava. It was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 28, 2007. Teide is the most visited national park in Spain. Teide National Park is an exceptional example of a relatively old, slow moving, geologically complex and mature volcanic system. The whole area is now a weird volcanic landscape filled with lava rocks, lava streams and ash beds. It offers a diverse and accessible assemblage of volcanic features and landscapes in a relatively limited area.

Cały park stanowi niezwykły skarb geologiczny, którego wulkany, kratery, kominy wulkaniczne, zastygłe strumienie lawy i rozmaite formacje tworzą imponujący zestaw kolorów i kształtów.

Mother and son duo running an Okinawan restaurant in my neighborhood. Planning to retire this month and go back home (to Okinawa). Gonna miss this place!

Taken for a challenge with the theme "still" Referring to that stone that simply sits there still the whole day, while everything else passes by him.

I was really sick when I went out to shoot this, but I didn't want to let my team mates down. I shot few frames and rushed back home, feeling way worse, but way better knowing that I would not let my dpc - wpl team down.
