Excerpt from www.blackwoodgallery.ca/program/movement-two-ecology:

When every basic system–environmental, political, economic and social–is in crisis and facing collapse, the media can be overwhelming. The sheer glut of information and misinformation circulating from trusted sources and deniers alike create an endless cycle of current events too heavy to dwell on, too extensive to fully comprehend. How do we, on a human scale, contend with all of this news?

In an effort to rouse the public out of resignation and passive acceptance of the state of the planet, Christina Battle’s series how to make sense out of the nonsensical compels viewers to pay attention to the ways our ecology is intertwined with systems of power, exchange, and extraction. Each image contains recent news headlines that focus on climate change, and also address topics like the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, conspiracy, and social uprisings. Like relics of catastrophe, the headlines are surface-level fragments and sound bites of an entangled, complex web of events and actions that have led to dire consequences.

Across the series, Battle offers prompts that seed the impulse to regain a sense of agency against fatalistic attitudes: “FOLLOW THE THREADS OF THE NETWORK,” “ATTUNE TO HOW INFORMATION TRAVELS,” “CONSIDER WHO YOU ARE IN RELATION WITH,” “OUR RELATIONSHIP IS SYMBIOTIC.” With each statement, Battle cuts through the noise of the news with strategies of empathy and criticality that foster collective resilience and action. The analogies between the natural and more-than-human world, urge viewers to recognize social and ecological relationships. These statements are not intended to be a utopian antidote, but rather achievable and persistent empowerments.

This program of images forms part two of a three-part exhibition, This Unfathomable Weight, which animates outdoor lightboxes across the UTM campus and billboards in Mississauga throughout the 2022–2023 academic year. The exhibition grapples publicly with how we make sense of living through the massive crises of recent years. Through an understanding of trauma as a psychic rupture, where meaning-making has been suspended, deferred, or displaced, the project carves out space for reparative gestures of across personal, societal and spiritual registers.

How many AT-AT walkers attacked Hoth?

According to the official novelization (by Donald Glut), there were at least 12.

Through the blizzard, the small dots seemed to be advancing at a slow yet steady pace, churning up clouds of snow as they moved toward the Rebel base.

The officer raised his electrobinoculars and focused on the approaching objects. There must have been a dozen of them resolutely advancing through the snow, looking like creatures out of some uncharted past. But they were machines, each of them stalking like enormous ungulates on four jointed legs.

Spür wie die kalte Glut

in deiner Seele brennt

Spürst du die dunkle Macht

die dich vom Leben trennt

Wir sind die schwarze Lust

im Schoss der Einsamkeit

Wir sind das letzte Licht

vor der Unendlichkeit

Wir sind die Kinder

Wir sind die Kinder der Nacht

Sind aus den Schatten

der Dunkelheit erwacht

Spürst du wie schwarzes Blut

durch deine Venen schießt

Pratts Falls is a great place for waterfall shots, and also to work on your glutes, because the stairs down are steep. The waterfall is 137 feet tall!

I'm guessing it must be horsepower payback time as a glut of Canadian Pacific power has been showing up on Norfolk Southern trains criss-crossing the Harrisburg area over the last two months. CP 8808 is making it's second run on NS 203 in the last week, bouncing back and forth between Atlanta and Rutherford on intermodal trains with the last SOO-paint SD60M trailing.

Feeding on a glut of flies,I think this must be either a Sedge or Alderfly as you can normally see the tail streamers of a Mayfly and are larger than the 12mm long Sedge and Alderfly.

This is the second of a series of captures of this Hobby, showing how it feeds on the wing after catching a fly;the fly in this case is either a Sedge or Alderfly(too small to be a Mayfly, and they're not big either)This takes all of a second..then onto the next snack, understandably the bird requires to eat quantities of these flies to cover the energy required in catching them.

It all gets a bit easier when Dragonflies become more abundant.

Although he is often described as the first and most influential post-modern artist, the unparalleled scope and diversity of Robert Rauschenberg’s work defies categorization. The acclaimed painter, sculptor, photographer, printmaker and performer was pioneering figure in contemporary art, employing an unusually wide range of mediums, techniques, and subject matter in his practice. Rauchenberg established his unique visual vocabulary early on and soon became known for his use of unexpected techniques and materials. His complex compositions and use of three-dimensional collage blurred the line between painting and sculpture.

I tend to have a glut of shots from my trips and I think that is the reason I've not posted this one before.

I love this place and look forward to visiting again at night under clear skies.

Mirit Ben Nun: Shortness of breath 'Shortness of breath' is not only a sign of physical weakness, it is a metaphor for a mental state of strong desire that knows no repletion; more and more, an unbearable glut, without repose. Mirit Ben Nun's type of work on the other hand requires an abundance of patience. This is a Sisyphean work (requiring hard labor) of marking lines and dots, filling every empty millimeter with brilliant blots. Therefore we are facing a paradox or a logical conflict. A patient and effortful work that stems from an urgent need to cover and fill, to adorn and coat. Her craft of layering reaches a state of a continuous ceremonial ritual. This ritual digests every object into itself - useful or discarded -- available and ordinary or rare and exceptional -- they submit and devote to the overlay work. Mirit BN gathers scrap off the streets -- cardboard rolls of fabric, assortments of wooden boards and pieces, plates and planks -- and constructs a new link, her own syntax, which she alone is fully responsible for. The new combination -- a type of a sculptural construction -- goes through a process of patching by the act of painting. In fact Mirit regards her three dimensional objects as a platform for painting, with a uniform continuity, even if it has obstacles, mounds and valleys. These objects beg her to paint, to lay down colors, to set in motion an intricate weave of abstract patterns that at times finds itself wandering the contours of human images and sometimes -- not. In those cases what is left is the monotonous activity of running the patterns, inch by inch, till their absolute coverage, till a short and passing instant of respite and than on again to a new onset. Next to this assembly of garbage and it's recycling into 'painted sculptures' Mirit offers a surprising reunion between her illustrated objects and so called cheap African sculpture; popular artifacts or articles that are classified in the standard culture as 'primitive'. This combination emphasizes the difference between her individualistic performance and the collective creation which is translated into cultural clichés. The wood carved image creates a moment of peace within the crowded bustle; an introverted image, without repetitiveness and reverberation. This meeting of strangers testifies that Mirit' work could not be labeled under the ´outsiders art´ category. She is a one woman school who is compelled to do the art work she picked out to perform. Therefore she isn't creating ´an image´ such as the carved wooden statues, but she produces breathless ´emotional jam' whose highest values are color, motion, beauty and plenitude. May it never lack, neither diluted, nor dull for even an instant Tali Tamir August 2010

It's Friday, so that means making soup for a crowd again.

There's a glut of cheap mushrooms today, so guess what we're having today.

Big deal, two ore trains at Proctor... whats the big deal? Unless you have been living under a rock, you'll know that the glut of cheap foreign steel has decimated the Iron Range of Minnesota. Out of 7 taconite plants, only Minntac, Minorca, and Hibbing Taconite are running at anywhere near full capacity. Northshore Mining, United Taconite (including the Thunderbird Mine) and Keewatin Taconite have not seen a train in months. This has left Proctor dead quiet. For a period in late 2015, Proctor, headquarters of the mighty DM&IR Railway, did not receive a single ore train. Many nights in December, the lights on the ore docks in Duluth would be completely extinguished, something I had never seen before. Two Harbors was handling around 5 trains of Minntac and Minorca pellets a day, and that was sufficient to keep up with demand. Minntac recently started sending one train a day to Proctor, and while our trusty government attempts to slow foreign steel, the once mighty hub of US steel production slowly begins to hum again. With a train on the dock, and two here at the scales, it is a VERY welcome sight to those who depend on iron ore for their livelihood.

Fire (burning paper)

Did I travel 1,497 miles from Kansas City to Concord, only to eat at a restaurant bearing the name of my home city? Or did I travel to New England with the express intent of glutting myself on all the seafood I could reasonably expect my company to buy?

Actually, we ended up eating at a Pizzeria Uno's that night and I ordered a seafood dish I could have gotten at home if I cared to.

Gebet aus »Morgenröte«

Ach, so gebt doch Wahnsinn,

ihr Himmlischen,

Wahnsinn, dass ich endlich

an mich selber glaube!

Lava, Fagradalsfjall, Reykjanes, Island, 2021

Fagradallsfjall is a Tuya volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland. After a long period of inactivity, the volcano erupted on March 19, 2021, and was active for a long period until September 18. The extended lava fields have become a not quite harmless tourist attraction and cover meanwhile about 5 km² of the mountain landscape.

The photo shows the still glowing lava field in about 800 m distance from the volcano. This is how people must have imagined the view into the open maw of hell in former times.
