I had barely landed in Iceland when the ninth eruption at Sundhnúksgígaröð began. Naturally, the entire area was briefly cleared and closed off, but it quickly became clear that the lava didn't threaten any infrastructure this time. The roads were reopened, residents, workers, and tourists were allowed back into the area, and I was able to take some beautiful shots of the volcano and lava field from a safe distance with my drone.

Another one picked off...

#6443 - 2025 Day 233/365: Well the two tomato harvest of a couple of weeks ago has turned into a proper glut crop, and they taste absolutely exquisite! Supermarket tomatoes may as well be cricket balls for the comparison.

They don't seem to have been eaten at all. Maybe the spider was picked off by a wren or suffered some other mishap and the web just kept catching flying insects.

The idea reminds me of the idea of a ghost lobster pot - something I have always found a bit disturbing:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFJJyp9wXs8 (dont wory this video has a happy ending)

alternatively maybe there are just so many chironomids down by the river that no spider can eat them all!

Looking at the photo now I can see some non-chironomids mixed in there but mostly chironomids in the web. A slow bend of the river is immediately behind the fence on which this web is on.

Happy Webnesday (WebWednesday )

And Happy Arachtober 3rd

I've always held off uploading front pages, but I am humbled and even embarrassed by successes, your successes that is, flickr is an opaque democracy, without you they would be resting with 0 views, as occasionally happened with my early uploads.

This glut will no doubt provoke jealously in some, and I am truly sorry for you feeling that way, I've already had a couple of hurtful comments, one suggesting I paid people, another that, I think suggested I was using bots, neither of these things is remotely true!, someone even changed an alias to something similar to mimic my name in a derogatory way, wow, it’s like being back in the school playground lol...

I do however pay respects to other peoples work were I find it, give honest and constructive comment where I can. There is a wonderful world of images available on flickr, there is just so much fabulous stuff, and people about, this is not difficult to find something new or special. flickr can be a lonely place, if your pictures are lonely, go connect, if you don’t enjoy looking at others work then you are probably in the wrong place. I am constantly learning from and enjoying other peoples work, that is what makes flickr great, one of the main motivations for being here is to enjoy the work of others, learning and enjoying connecting.

There are probably some interesting stats that I could put here, but suffice to say it has been a big month, connections from more than 60 countries have been recorded on a flag counter on my profile page, I find that amazing that people from all over the globe have taken the time to connect with my stream, I am humbled by this.

Thank you so much for the magical flickr month.

Here hoping this doesn’t alienate too much! Go connect and enjoy the world of magical images that is the world of flickr and keep uploading wonderful images.

funny, the guy who saw me snapping this shot tried to photograph the same thing but another security guard yelled at him and told him to move along.

I'm still baffled how he managed to accomplished this. Must be clenching his glutes.

It's Friday, so that means making soup for a crowd again.

With a glut of cheap mushrooms, we're having mushroom soup today. Here's how:

In a big pan

Soften a load of garlic in some oil

Add finely chopped celery to cover the base and soften

Add some finely chopped carrot

Add finely chopped broccoli (it was cheap, and will add some body)

Cover and sweat for a few minutes

Add chicken stock

Bring to the boil for a couple of minutes

Uncover and simmer - let the soup reduce

Taste and add salt and black pepper as required

Add a load of Greek yogurt in the last 5 minutes before serving

Add some sherry (if you have it; I didn't) or some balsamic vinegar - it 'picks up' the general flavor

Serve

With croutons (I had some)

With grated or shaved cheese (because most people like it)

And some bread

Notably, I almost ran out today, which doesn't happen often. This recipe seemed to be a bit of a crowd-pleaser.

we have had a glut of fruit from the allotment, might as well put them to work before turning them into ice cream, jam and sauce.

Mirit Ben Nun: Shortness of breath

'Shortness of breath' is not only a sign of physical weakness, it is a metaphor for a mental state of strong desire that knows no repletion; more and more, an unbearable glut, without repose. Mirit Ben Nun's type of work on the other hand requires an abundance of patience. This is a Sisyphean work (requiring hard labor) of marking lines and dots, filling every empty millimeter with brilliant blots. Therefore we are facing a paradox or a logical conflict. A patient and effortful work that stems from an urgent need to cover and fill, to adorn and coat. Her craft of layering reaches a state of a continuous ceremonial ritual.

This ritual digests every object into itself - useful or discarded -- available and ordinary or rare and exceptional -- they submit and devote to the overlay work. Mirit BN gathers scrap off the streets -- cardboard rolls of fabric, assortments of wooden boards and pieces, plates and planks -- and constructs a new link, her own syntax, which she alone is fully responsible for. The new combination -- a type of a sculptural construction -- goes through a process of patching by the act of painting.

In fact Mirit regards her three dimensional objects as a platform for painting, with a uniform continuity, even if it has obstacles, mounds and valleys. These objects beg her to paint, to lay down colors, to set in motion an intricate weave of abstract patterns that at times finds itself wandering the contours of human images and sometimes -- not. In those cases what is left is the monotonous activity of running the patterns, inch by inch, till their absolute coverage, till a short and passing instant of respite and than on again to a new onset.

Next to this assembly of garbage and it's recycling into 'painted sculptures' Mirit offers a surprising reunion between her illustrated objects and so called cheap African sculpture; popular artifacts or articles that are classified in the standard culture as 'primitive'.

This combination emphasizes the difference between her individualistic performance and the collective creation which is translated into cultural clichés. The wood carved image creates a moment of peace within the crowded bustle; an introverted image, without repetitiveness and reverberation. This meeting of strangers testifies that Mirit' work could not be labeled under the ´outsiders art´ category. She is a one woman school who is compelled to do the art work she picked out to perform. Therefore she isn't creating ´an image´ such as the carved wooden statues, but she produces breathless ´emotional jam' whose highest values are color, motion, beauty and plenitude. May it never lack, neither diluted, nor dull for even an instant

Excerpt from www.blackwoodgallery.ca/program/movement-two-ecology:

When every basic system–environmental, political, economic and social–is in crisis and facing collapse, the media can be overwhelming. The sheer glut of information and misinformation circulating from trusted sources and deniers alike create an endless cycle of current events too heavy to dwell on, too extensive to fully comprehend. How do we, on a human scale, contend with all of this news?

In an effort to rouse the public out of resignation and passive acceptance of the state of the planet, Christina Battle’s series how to make sense out of the nonsensical compels viewers to pay attention to the ways our ecology is intertwined with systems of power, exchange, and extraction. Each image contains recent news headlines that focus on climate change, and also address topics like the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, conspiracy, and social uprisings. Like relics of catastrophe, the headlines are surface-level fragments and sound bites of an entangled, complex web of events and actions that have led to dire consequences.

Across the series, Battle offers prompts that seed the impulse to regain a sense of agency against fatalistic attitudes: “FOLLOW THE THREADS OF THE NETWORK,” “ATTUNE TO HOW INFORMATION TRAVELS,” “CONSIDER WHO YOU ARE IN RELATION WITH,” “OUR RELATIONSHIP IS SYMBIOTIC.” With each statement, Battle cuts through the noise of the news with strategies of empathy and criticality that foster collective resilience and action. The analogies between the natural and more-than-human world, urge viewers to recognize social and ecological relationships. These statements are not intended to be a utopian antidote, but rather achievable and persistent empowerments.

This program of images forms part two of a three-part exhibition, This Unfathomable Weight, which animates outdoor lightboxes across the UTM campus and billboards in Mississauga throughout the 2022–2023 academic year. The exhibition grapples publicly with how we make sense of living through the massive crises of recent years. Through an understanding of trauma as a psychic rupture, where meaning-making has been suspended, deferred, or displaced, the project carves out space for reparative gestures of across personal, societal and spiritual registers.
