Given the increase in demand for healthy diets and OFSP, the CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB) provided the International Potato Center (CIP) with a scaling grant to accelerate the use of OFSP puree in baked and fried products in Kenya, Malawi and Uganda. The project launch for Kenya was held on 31st May, 2019 at ILRI Campus in Nairobi.

Mid August with Level 2 Covid restrictions in New Zealand, saw Pioneer Motorcycle Club being given approval to proceed with Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2020 South Island Trials Champs. This was great news after Rounds 1 and 2 were cancelled. A lot of rain in the days immediately before the event saw the organisers easing Saturdays sections resulting in low scores. Sunday made up for this with a longer loop and some tougher sections. Great to see junior sections included on both days. Thanks to the parents who helped setting these sections and keeping an eye on proceedings. Great to have riders travelling from all over the South Island and a sole representative from the North. Thanks for coming and supporting the event. Thanks also to the property owners and the observers without who the event could not run. Enjoy the photos. The final South Island rounds are being held Labour Weekend in Christchurch as part of the NZ Champs.

Who are Graduate lawyers ?

Graduate lawyers are being given starting salaries as a high as £ 150,000 as pay inflation hits its highest level in 20 years, according to a recruiter.

Alan Bannatyne, chief financial officer at recruitment consultancy Robert Walters, said some firms are increasing their salaries by up to 50 per cent amid a 'fierce competition for talent'.

Newly certified lawyers at the most renowned companies are even earning a maximum of £ 147,000 before bonuses, reports the BBC.

City banks are also among those raising graduate's salaries, while supermarkets such as Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi have boosted wages to at least £ 10 an hour.

The rise in salaries follows openings for law associates in London increasing around 131 per cent year-on-year between January and November 2021, according to figures from analytics firm Vacancysoft and recruiter BCL Legal.

Overall, job adverts hit a record high in the run-up to Christmas, with 210,000 vacancies posted in the UK between November 22 and 28, taking the total to 3.51million active postings.

The pandemic has prompted what economists have dubbed ‘the great resignation’ after scores of workers reassessed their employment during lockdown, leaving their jobs to change careers, or seeking a higher wage elsewhere.

Visitors were given the opportunity to cross the plaza and place a flower in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during the second Flowers of Remembrance Day at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., May 28, 2023.

This event pays homage to the first official Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, which originally took place at the cemetery in 1868 as a way to honor the sacrifices of those who fought and died in the Civil War.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Twenty six metres at 12:48pm on Friday 23rd February 2024 off St Paul's Churchyard and Queens Head Passage in Paternoster Square, the City of Westminster, London.

Once called Paternoster Row, this area was once the centre of the London publishing trade and destroyed by aerial bombardment during the Second World War Blitz. It is now the location for the London Stock Exchange and now features the re-erected 1669 Temple Bar Gate by Christopher Wren which was restored and placed here in 2004 at a cost of three million pounds. The Paternoster Square Column is a Corinthian column of Portland stone with gold leaf covered flaming copper urn that is illuminated by fibre optic lights at night.

It was designed by William Whitfield of Whitfield Partners and is also a ventilation shaft for a service road beneath the square. It stands 75 feet tall.

Above Texas Bar - Liefdefjorden.

Texas Bar - the name given to this hut in 1927 by the trapper Hilmar Nøis who constructed several huts around Woodfjorden and Liefdefjorden. He had once visited Texas and maybe the bars had left a homely impression.

A short distance behind the camera is another Ben Nevis, though I did not know this at the time. The real Ben Nevis is 1700 miles to the SSW.

First ascent probably 1899 by Dr William Speirs Bruce during the Prince Albert I of Monaco Expedition in 1899. Bruce had been the second superintendent of the Scottish Ben Nevis Metereology Observatory after Robert Traill Ormond. Bruce went on to accompany Prince Albert 1st of Monaco on his ship based explorations of Svalbard.

This was before Bruce led the Scotia Expedition (supported financially by Prince Albert) to Antarctica with notable scientific success, however earning the considerable and nearly overwhelming prejudice of the Royal Society, the Royal Geographic Society and The Admiralty who concluded it was a diversion and distraction from the first Scott expedition 1901-4.

As an outcome of his atrocious treatment by the RGS and Admiralty, he was unable to find a publisher for his scientific and exploratory findings on the remarkably successful Scottish National Antarctic Expedition 1902-4 aboard the Scotia. His material was only posthumously published in its original form and layout in 1992 by the Edinburgh University Press entitled "The Log of the Scotia". It did not help his cause that English establishment regarded him as a dangerous Scottish separatist.

Bruce overwintered in Antarctic in a prepared anchorage, without sustaining damage or being entrapped. Scott had to be rescued and the Discovery dynamited out of the ice by a Dundee whale ship captain McKay, sent down to the Antarctic to achieve this.

Bruce also formed a company to explore the geological minerals around Isfjord before that location was named after the American industrialist Longyear.

William Speirs Bruce also became an early President of the Scottish Ski Club.

Yet he remains little known even in his own country.

Seton Gordon the well known Scottish conservation author published 'Amid Snowy Wastes' in 1922, a description of wildlife around Svalbard. I have a first edition amongst 11 of his books, and a biography, and an anthology of his best writing.

Fly away little girl! Make fairy wings... they're fun and easy. Details will be available in Tina's new book....

Sometimes when you wait long enough...good things happen!

I had pretty much given-up on seeing a moose, when leaving the Grand Tetons and crossing the bridge at Moose Junction...there he was. I was ecstatic with excitement! It was drizzeling rain at the time, but as we jumped out to get a closer look, the rain stopped and we had our photo opportunity.

This was the last of the National Parks we went through on our almost 4 thousand mile adventure. We traveled through 9 states and visitied over 10 National and State parks.

Although this wasn't a 'birding trip' as we were traveling with friends to see the sights and sights we saw. I was, however, able to capture a few unsuspecting birds along the way that I will post as I mull through a couple thousand pics.

We just got home from the emergency hospital. If you look closely she has a bit of a hump, where she was given subque fluids. Her eyes are crusty, no appetite and she has the sniffles. Doc said it was an upper resp. infection. She is on rest and fluids for now. I hope she eats tonight.

After finishing some building work I put my steel toe capped boots in this old barn portal to dry out. That was four years ago and after a recent spring clean I decided to take them out of their resting place and put them where they belong, however due to public pressure I have been forced to leave them where they are as even my neighbor said he would miss them if they weren't around anymore!

This cabinet card is one of twelve photographs given to me on February 20, 2015, by the owner of the Champlain Valley Antique Center in Shelburne, Vermont. He asked if I wanted them and I declined.

I had plenty of research to do, and one of the photos mentioned that the subject had no heirs. He then gave them to me saying they had been given to him, so he didn't consider it a loss. I believe all twelve photo-subjects are members of the Christman family, owners of the Christman Sons Piano Company of New York City. The company operated from the latter half of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century and produced an line of upscale pianos. These pianos today are physical testimony to the quality and craftsmanship of their work. See one/hear one in action. ...or Für Elise?

The annotation on the back of this photograph claims the subject is George Christman. He first appeared at eight years old in the 1880 New York City census, the son of Peter and Caroline Christman. He was still living with his parents in the 1900 Manhattan Borough census, along with his sister, Carrie. As noted in the trade journal link above, George became president of the Christman Sons Piano Co. According to the 1910 and 1930 censuses, he was single, living with the Peineckes, his sister and brother-in-law. However, one trade journal article showed him in a photograph with Mrs. Christman and a boy described as George Christman Jr., heir. This prompted me to search harder for him in the 1920 census. I found him in the 1920 Hudson County, Weehawken, New Jersey census as the son-in-law of Barabara Peppler, widow. With him was his wife, Ida R. Christman, age 27, and son, George Jr., age 6. Ida R. Peppler Christman died January 21, 1922.

I am seeking descendants.

Given the fruitful and efficient cooperation of the two organizations, the Memorandum of Understanding between FAO and the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) was extended for another 5 years. FAO Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia Vladimir Rakhmanin signed the Protocol of Extension together with the Minister of the EEC responsible for Industry and Agriculture Aliaksandr Subbotin.

The signing ceremony was preceded with a working meeting of the Minister with technical experts of the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia.

On any given day during the warmer months, one can be treated to the vast array of dragonfly and damselfly species, and when looking closely, the distinct patterns and colors are prominently displayed. Being so small in stature and often on the go from plant to plant, or in wide circles over the body of water, photographing them with a high level sharpness is not that easy, but with patience and a sense of their flight and landing habits, successful shots are not impossible.

This garden, nestled amongst hills and brooks, is like the proverbial Garden of Eden. Incorporating the natural landscape and creating a truly enchanting garden around it makes this place a MUST VISIT site for anyone with a sense of appreciation for nature in a quiet way. Nothing pretentious, but so much can be seen and learned from each outing. The bucolic setting will put your heart and soul at ease, and quickly remove the stress of everyday life—at least, while you are there.

The vast collection of trees and plants is incredible, and the landscape garden planning and design is of superb presentation and care. Wildlife such as birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles can be seen regularly and the pure air of life emanates throughout this lovely terrain. The brooks and ponds are rich with activity and whether you enjoy photography or not, just being there is reward enough.

Situated in Far Hills of Somerset County of New Jersey, this hidden gem is worth the trip. Upon your first view, you will know instantly that this is a special garden, unique unto itself . . .

Givens Castle is an old Irish Castle, allegedly brought brick by brick from Ireland (I haven't read much about the lore). Also allegedly, a Ghost walks from room to room.

I don't care much about all that. It's just a beautiful building on the South Side of Chicago, and is now the Beverly Unitarian Church.

Given its proportions it's probably begging for more food, I expect ;)

JROTC Award Given at DAR Picnic to Anthony William Thursby on Sat. June 11, 2016. The Annual William Tuffs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held their annual summer picnic at the Willowdale Park Pavilion in Elkhart, Indiana on Saturday, June 11, 2016.At their abbreviated official meeting, they presented Anthony William Thursby with the JROTC Outstanding Recipient Award. He attended the picnic with his sister, Cassandra. The next DAR meeting is in September. As is the Chapter’s custom, they invited the Veterans from the Robert L. Miller, Sr. Veterans Center in South Bend, Indiana and the Color Guard organized by Ed Buras. Jamie and Ed Buras accompanied the Veterans to the picnic. The Color Guard extends Honors to Veterans at Funerals and participate in Parades and at other requested events. Those interested in this service, can contact Buras at the Center. DAR

Member Beth Thurston posed in front of her flag collection with Penny Bucks who made a special apron for Thurston. A delicious homemade buffet dinner complete with dessert was served, and afterward, the group played Bingo for the many white elephant prizes that had been brought by the DAR members. The remaining gifts after the game were given to the Center for those unable to attend the picnic.

Given today's announcements about the future of the US Supreme court, it seems only appropriate that it is also Canada Day. Looks like my neighbors here in SF are celebrating.
