JROTC Award Given at DAR Picnic to Anthony William Thursby on Sat. June 11, 2016. The Annual William Tuffs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held their annual summer picnic at the Willowdale Park Pavilion in Elkhart, Indiana on Saturday, June 11, 2016.At their abbreviated official meeting, they presented Anthony William Thursby with the JROTC Outstanding Recipient Award. He attended the picnic with his sister, Cassandra. The next DAR meeting is in September.As is the Chapter’s custom, they invited the Veterans from the Robert L. Miller, Sr. Veterans Center in South Bend, Indiana and the Color Guard organized by Ed Buras. Jamie and Ed Buras accompanied the Veterans to the picnic. The Color Guard extends Honors to Veterans at Funerals and participate in Parades and at other requested events. Those interested in this service, can contact Buras at the Center. DAR
Member Beth Thurston posed in front of her flag collection with Penny Bucks who made a special apron for Thurston. A delicious homemade buffet dinner complete with dessert was served, and afterward, the group played Bingo for the many white elephant prizes that had been brought by the DAR members. The remaining gifts after the game were given to the Center for those unable to attend the picnic.
Given that almost all these were taken through dirty, double-glazed train windows they give a fair idea of my view on Friday as I headed west into the sunset on the line from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh.
Workers at a plant nursery where new trees are grown in a scheme funded by the local government to combat deforestation and land erosion and subsequent siltation of the river Nile. The new trees are then given out to local farmers for free.

Opened 17 Apr 1864 on land given by Patrick McNamara, also used as school, closed 1916, demolished 1925, stone used for house in Auburn, bell to Auburn Methodist (now Uniting), church. A coping stone from church given to National Trust for safe-keeping was incorporated in cairn erected 2014.
“At Undalya a site for the church was donated by Mr. Patrick McNamara.” [Southern Cross 24 Apr 1925]
“a brief account of the dedication of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter [sic] at Undalya, Wakefield Bridge, on Sunday last. Four priests officiated at the service. The Rev. Father Smyth preached a most impressive dedication sermon. The church was crowded, and numbers stood outside, unable to gain admittance. The collections amounted to upwards of £175 towards the cost of the building. It is a very pretty church — Gothic in style of architecture, and situated upon the hill on the southern side of the bridge, commanding a view of the whole country. Given to me by my Grandpa for Christmas. He bought this while in the Navy in 1952 or 1953 in the Midway Islands. He still had the original leather case and manual.
Will Comet Catalina become visible to the unaided eye? Given the unpredictability of comets, no one can say for sure, but it seems like a good bet. The comet was discovered in 2013 by observations of the Catalina Sky Survey. Since then, Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) has steadily brightened and is currently brighter than 8th magnitude, making it visible with binoculars and long-duration camera images. As the comet further approaches the inner Solar System it will surely continue to intensify, possibly becoming a naked eye object sometime in October and peaking sometime in late November. The comet will reside primarily in the skies of the southern hemisphere until mid-December, at which time its highly inclined orbit will bring it quickly into northern skies. When I was given directions to the Northside Women's Center earlier today, I was prepared for something that looked vaguely like a hospital. Instead, I entered what looked like nothing so much as a several-star hotel! It even included this central atrium, as though someone was attempting to channel John Portman through its design. The staff who were replacing bedding wheeled around attractive carts that would not have been out of place in a resort. The only real indication of the building's function were the nurses, carefully checking on all of the new mothers and babies.
Though I suppose the gift shop full of newborn paraphernalia was also a giveaway.

Meole Brace is a south-western suburb of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. The Church of Holy Trinity, Meole Brace was consecrated in 1869 and is believed to be the 4th church on the present site since Saxon (pre Domesday) times. It replaced a 70 year old church of such apparent ugliness that the eccentric vicar of the time decided to replace it!
Holy Trinity is an active and thriving church and was very busy on the day I visited when Christmas preparations were in full swing.
The church is famous for its association with the author Mary Webb, who was married there. It is also know for its collection of windows designed by William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Maddox Brown as well as by Kempe and Powell.

I was given this snapper after offering to help some folks launch their boat. Hours later, they return from their fishing trip and presented me with this beautiful fish. Yum!
So yesterday I was given the opportunity to photograph Shadow Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. I'm not going to lie, I was pretty nervous about it all, this being possibly the most important or famous person i'd photographed, didn't want to balls it up! I turned up at her constituency office to find that she was going to be a little late, but that meant more time for setting up and making sure the shot was right. Once she was there I was ready to go, 30 shots later she had to go, not the greatest amount of time to shoot anyone but definitely an insight into regular newspaper work.

These tokens were given to everyone who came to witness Atlantis being turned over from NASA to the Delaware North Companies who run the Kennedy Space Center visitor place. While it was put in a very cheap case, the token seems to not be cheap. Admission to the event certainly was great enough to pay for something better than a cheap arcade token. I'm no expert in the quality of these items, though, so I can't tell how not-cheap it might be. No matter, though; I'm keeping it.

Given the increase in demand for healthy diets and OFSP, the CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB) provided the International Potato Center (CIP) with a scaling grant to accelerate the use of OFSP puree in baked and fried products in Kenya, Malawi and Uganda. The project launch for Kenya was held on 31st May, 2019 at ILRI Campus in Nairobi.

Given it is the Autumn Equinox today, and it all goes downhill from here, I thought I'd make the most of the decent weather and have a me another trundle.
I did have the GoPro on this ride, but the brains trust here set up the quick start to default to video instead of photos, and I haven't got into even looking at them yet, let alone figuring out how to post them or anything.
Boswiddle Ford, and the stream/river has just broken over the top and is trickling across the road. A bit disappointing that, as that is a dirty Bantu parked there, and I hoped a couple of runs through the ford would wash some of the grolly off.

This portrait had originally been given to Lord Archibald Hamilton as a gift by Prince Frederick, and was left by Hamilton to his son-in-law, George, 1st Earl of Warwick, on his death in 1754.
Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707 - 1751). On 1st February 1707, Prince Frederick was born in Hanover. His father ascended to the British throne in 1727 as George II. Frederick was the heir apparent and given the title Prince of Wales. Although young and fond of drinking and gambling, Frederick was also a great patron of the arts and a musician. His mother, Caroline of Ansbach, said of him, “that wretch, that villain! I wish the ground would open and sink the monster to the lowest hole in hell.”

The Annual William Tuffs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held their annual summer picnic at the Willowdale Park Pavilion in Elkhart, Indiana on Saturday, June 11, 2016.At their abbreviated official meeting, they presented Anthony William Thursby with the JROTC Outstanding Recipient Award. He attended the picnic with his sister, Cassandra. The next DAR meeting is in September.As is the Chapter’s custom, they invited the Veterans from the Robert L. Miller, Sr. Veterans Center in South Bend, Indiana and the Color Guard organized by Ed Buras. Jamie and Ed Buras accompanied the Veterans to the picnic. The Color Guard extends Honors to Veterans at Funerals and participate in Parades and at other requested events. Those interested in this service, can contact Buras at the Center. DAR
Member Beth Thurston posed in front of her flag collection with Penny Bucks who made a special apron for Thurston. A delicious homemade buffet dinner complete with dessert was served, and afterward, the group played Bingo for the many white elephant prizes that had been brought by the DAR members. The remaining gifts after the game were given to the Center for those unable to attend the picnic.
I was given this little 75pc Wentworth jigsaw by my best friend. It shows Portrait of a Little Girl by Cornelis de Vos, and is in the Devonshire collection at nearby Chatsworth, in Derbyshire. It didn't take very long but handling the pieces was very satisfying, and it occurred to me that they were much chunkier than the River Cam jigsaw I'd just completed.
The 75pc jigsaw is in green livery, with semi-shiny finish and flags along the bottom edge and probably dates back to the first use of compressed board in the period 2005-8. The River Cam jigsaw is in a cream box, and from the last few years because the front label has the current square format, which allows for both landscape and portrait images. People have often said that Wentworth have been scaling down the board thickness and here you can see the proof. I must say that I'm beginning to side with those who prefer the plywood pieces - and it's always an added incentive to buy an old design you like if it comes in the telltale shiny green boxes.
Given that I shoot a fair amount of landscapes/seascapes I often find it hard to isolate a small element of a scene. It is usually tempting to include as much as possible. Maybe I need to go landscape shooting with a long lens and leave the wide angle lenses at home one day. This is a crop from a larger image.
On any given day during the warmer months, one can be treated to the vast array of dragonfly and damselfly species, and when looking closely, the distinct patterns and colors are prominently displayed. Being so small in stature and often on the go from plant to plant, or in wide circles over the body of water, photographing them with a high level sharpness is not that easy, but with patience and a sense of their flight and landing habits, successful shots are not impossible.
This garden, nestled amongst hills and brooks, is like the proverbial Garden of Eden. Incorporating the natural landscape and creating a truly enchanting garden around it makes this place a MUST VISIT site for anyone with a sense of appreciation for nature in a quiet way. Nothing pretentious, but so much can be seen and learned from each outing. The bucolic setting will put your heart and soul at ease, and quickly remove the stress of everyday life—at least, while you are there.
The vast collection of trees and plants is incredible, and the landscape garden planning and design is of superb presentation and care. Wildlife such as birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles can be seen regularly and the pure air of life emanates throughout this lovely terrain. The brooks and ponds are rich with activity and whether you enjoy photography or not, just being there is reward enough.
Situated in Far Hills of Somerset County of New Jersey, this hidden gem is worth the trip. Upon your first view, you will know instantly that this is a special garden, unique unto itself . . .
Givens Castle is an old Irish Castle, allegedly brought brick by brick from Ireland (I haven't read much about the lore). Also allegedly, a Ghost walks from room to room.
I don't care much about all that. It's just a beautiful building on the South Side of Chicago, and is now the Beverly Unitarian Church.
