Am Basteir Summit 934m
Am Basteir is a vertically-sided blade of rock whose ascent is only possible for keen scramblers from Bealach a Basteir. Below the summit of the mountain is the remarkable lesser peak of the Basteir Tooth - an imposing fang of rock that can only be reached by rock-climbers.
The Black Cuillin are the most spectacular and challenging mountains in Britain. These are peaks of which dreams are made - and nightmares! Many of their summits require scrambling or even rock-climbing to reach.
I liked the way this tree appears to be pushing its way ahead of the pack in a show-off kind of way. Taken in Hillock Woods, Prices Risborough

Getting as close as I possibly can on a circuit board, harvested from a remote-controlled power outlet whose remote went belly-up, capturing examples of tiny surface-mount devices, possibly resistors. The ruler scale at the bottom is in millimeters.
Taken with the Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens at 5X magnification. At that setting, the lens has to be less than an inch (25.4mm) from the subject, making lighting difficult. The lens and camera were attached to a macro focusing rail, a necessary but very finicky device (more so at extreme magnification) used to move the camera fore and aft to focus. Given my sometimes uncooperative set of hands I have, it was a challenge, indeed.

Managed to get out this morning and pay the beach a visit - this time it was Newcastle Beach, NSW; Australia.
Here I've used the rusty posts that surround what's known locally as The Canoe (or World) Pool a children's saltwater pool that is located beside the Newcastle Ocean Baths.
The sun was pretty high in the sky so it was necessary for me to use my Lee Big Stopper and Lee .9 Hard Grad filters to create this long exposure image.

So I took this one in December last year but its taken me ages to get around to getting it edited and finally uploaded. I've still got thousands of photos from the last few years to go through and hopefully I'll start to make a dent on them before long, but am sure I've thought that a few times before and I've still got a massive backlog ;)
...Literally!
This is a shot I captured of an Orchard Orbweaver (Leucauge venusta) at somewhere in between 1.5:1 and 1:1. Working distance with this lens at this magnification is in the area of 3 inches (~7.5cm), which is not ideal when photographing spiders!
In this shot, even with my failure to find focus, you can see some details that have been missing from my 1:1 shots! Her spinneret is right on the edge of focus, and you can start to see the interesting structure of it.
This shot also displays her specialized setae ("hairs") on her back legs! They are located closer to the body and are noticeably "softer" than the other setae. She uses these specialized sensory setae to sense vibrations and movement as she hangs upside down in her horizontal web.
Once I get the working distance committed to muscle memory, I'll get some better shots.
This photo was captured at around 1.25:1 or so using my new (to me) Venus Laowa 60mm f2.8 Macro. This photo is uncropped. This outstanding orbweaver is around 5-6mm long, not counting her ludicrous legspan!

"Get Down on It" Week Continues! A 7-day celebration of looking down our noses at our subjects, much like King Henry VIII did.
Painting: Chicago was thunderstorming all day yesterday, so I spent the morning in the corner of my studio where I go to paint, but mostly I watched the rain pelt the windows. Ahhhhhhh. Well, you know what happened next: a click of the shutter...then a nap. :)
My talented friend Kim also shot paint brushes yesterday, because great creative minds think alike. :)

My buddy Jim Salge and I hiked to Victor Head to shoot the foliage. Unfortunately there is a tree right in the middle of the rock outcropping making it difficult to get a clean pano. So to get this shot: flic.kr/p/zyesAu we used our tripod as a camera boom. This is him getting his version of the shot.
Every trip to Brockville yielded a wealth of interesting trains to photograph. Here on 12 June 1983 VIA train 53, the Lakeshore accelerates out of the station and across Perth Street with lead FPA4 No. 6791 puffing out turbo lag smoke while a GMD F9B assists.

A couple of family members who have difficulty getting about experiencing for the first time freedom that can be had with a mobility scooter
Fuji X-E3 plus Samyang tele lens (fixed at F6.3). This mirror reflex lens has something in common with the Hubble and the James-Webb Space Telescopes, at least the basic mirror technology. Whereas these space telescopes have a fabulous resolution, the same can not be said of this lens. Still, the images produced with this lens can be satisfying (as long as magnification is not expected).
This was shot April 14, 1980 on a dreary Upper Peninsula day. The 4407 and 720 had struggled up the grade from Marquette with 15 cars on the wet rail and had been held at this signal for an eastbound CNW ore load out of Euclid Yard. Once the CNW cleared the Soo got the light and is starting west again. A rescan.
