I was quite pleased to get these shots yesterday as it was blowing a hooley.
There’s a good reason why some bugs disguise themselves as another insect – it tricks predators like birds into thinking they are dangerous. One example of a bug in disguise is the hoverfly, which is easily confused with a wasp.
There are over 270 types of hoverfly in Britain and about 120 of them have the distinguished black and yellow markings of a wasp. Some hoverfly’s look like honey bees (shiny brown, orange and black), bumblebees (furry) or hornets (huge wasp-like insects which although big and scary aren’t as ill-tempered as wasps).
GET MY DRIFT. I only made it outside yesterday to empty the compost and haul wood. The wind was busy rearranging the new snow both burying and revealing last year's sunflower stalks. I managed a few shots out the back window.
At the weekend, before Storm Ciara hit, I went over to Stowe to photograph the snowdrops, following a route through the gardens.
I took them with my 50mm lens, getting some wide open shots at f1.8
Getting the muscle out of a razor clam is not an easy exercise as it is sticky, not easy to disconnect from the shell. This red knot knew how to do it, but as many other sandpipers and turnstones, it definitely needed a bath after the meal as parts of the flesh were sticking to its feathers.

A brief on the science behind it:
Archimedes’ Principle: Objects float or sink depending on whether they are less or denser than the fluid they’re in.
Liquid Density: The clear liquid inside the thermoscope expands slightly as it warms, making it less dense. When it cools, it contracts and becomes denser.
Calibrated Bulbs: Each colored glass bulb has a small metal tag with a specific weight. These weights are carefully chosen so that at certain temperatures, the buoyant force matches the bulb’s weight.

After a good trip upriver from La Crosse, westbound wayfreight H19 gets thrown into Lakeview siding to wait out several moves each way before tackling work off the mainline at Lake City, MN. This would conclude our very productive chase of the last Soo Line SD60M on a picture perfect September afternoon over a decade ago.

The juvenile Bald Eagle starts to get some of his white head feathers around the time he is 4 years old, and rarely sooner than that. He may even have a small patch of white feathers on his chest still. He probably will have a completely white head by the time he is 5.5 years old. Some eagles can take up to 8 years to be so white! This image was taken at the Birds of Prey rescue Center in Alberta last year. Happy Wing Wednesday.
