I haven't been out on a night shoot since Sept 2007... geez - I need to get my head in the cold evening sky. Here's an oldie from the end of 2006. January 08's moon is nearly full.... let's get out there!

he's preparing for winter!!

Fall is (unfortunately) also a season of first colds and flu, so I made few get well cards. I used Small variety alphabeth to compose a sentiment and sweet apple image from Designer fruis clear set. Tfl

Getting up to take sunrise wildflower pictures was well worth it :)

The Marg boys do a crafty sashay to get their work done quick in Camphora so they can get on home on this short turning day.

Such colorful birds, often taken for granted because we see them so often.

But look at this: an iridescent green head, yellow bill and orange feet, gray in the body and wings, accented with an intense blue speculum on the wing set off by bright white borders, a brown breast and a white tail with a black overlay that includes a curl. What an amazing compilation of parts!

I like the calm vibes the image spreads - taken in winter during a very cold evening.

daily ritual, usually indoors with a nylabone, but we can generalize outdoors pretty well.

For my this challenge, Ari, who goes by the name of Lord Nikon 12, His challenge was,

"I am having a great time going through your stream. You take so many beautiful photos, but I don't see any people :(

My challenge to you is to take some portraits and maybe start a 100-strangers project. After that, go wild!".

I had so many ideas for this challenge, but for some reason or another, none of them came thru due to my timing or the people I wanted to take portraits of.. Anyhow, I always wanted to learn the in-camera multiple exposure setting. This was the perfect opportunity for me to do that. This is the portrait of my mum who has come to stay with us.

The tree in this picture is a very old, tall tree right across my house.. I see it change every season..but it still weathers all the changes and still stands tall and majestic.. This gave me an idea to portray my mum and the tree together.. Mum has been a steady rock in my life. She has weathered many many changes in her life lately, but she still stands tall and weathers anything that comes her way with a smile on her face..

Ari, I hope you like this portrait of my mum.. and I am hoping that I find courage to start the 100 strangers project like you suggested sooner than later.. :)

Thanks again for the challenge. It was fun learning a new technique. I have to add that this is not an in-camera shot. Somehow when I downloaded them, they all had a very strong pink tint to them. I have no idea why. Will need to figure that out. However, it is a fun technique and Ari, I hope to see you soon again!

After seeing a mention by Stephen Downes of a presentation he did for the 2023 Open Education Conference called Open Learning in the Fediverse which is now, thanks to Dr Tesla, the hot topic.

For some reason I felt an urge to remix the opening credits to a favorite show when I was a kid, Get Smart.

Okay, there is a low resolution image in Wikimedia Commons declared as fair use, for which my use here is likely not a qualifier. Hmmm, How about a case of parody? To the copyright holders, if anything, my use might offer more people to look up this classic show, watch, and appreciate what a treasure it was. My use is not o steal or take away from Get Smart but to honor it.

Who owns popular culture? The rules are not written into law, so my remix is likely the most legal. But I will roll the dice.

My source was a screen grab from the YouTube video www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ6gdRfBW6c where I used Photoshop to copy brush out the SMART letters, and replicate with a font guess (Georgia) for the words "Federated".

Is this changed enough from the original? Leave it to the lawyers.

The Pratt & Whitney J58 (company designation JT11D-20) was a jet engine that powered the Lockheed A-12, and subsequently the YF-12 and the SR-71 aircraft. Twin J58s pushed the SR-71 to a cruising speed of 2,211 MPH.

The J58 was a single-spool turbojet with an afterburner. It had a unique bleed from the compressor to the afterburner which gave increased thrust at high speeds.

This feature caused it to be referred to as a turboramjet in some writings.

It delivered 25,000 pound-force (110 kN) of thrust without afterburner (dry) and 34,000 (150 kN) with afterburner (wet).

General characteristics

Type: afterburning turbojet with compressor bleed bypass

Length: 180 in (4,600 mm) (an additional 6 in (150 mm) at max. temp.)

Diameter: 50 in (1,300 mm)

Dry weight: approx. 6,000 lb (2,700 kg)

Components

Compressor: 9-stage, axial flow

Combustors: Cannular 8 burner cans in an annular combustion casing

Turbine: two-stage axial flow

Fuel type: JP-7, JP-4 or JP-5 for emergency refuelling from any tanker (Mach 1.5 limit)

Oil system: Pressure spray return system with Fuel-cooled oil cooler

Performance

Maximum thrust: 34,000 pounds-force (151.24 kN)

wet, 25,000 pounds-force (111.21 kN) dry

Overall pressure ratio: 7.5 at take off

Bypass ratio: low bypass ratio to afterburner

Air mass flow: 300 lb/s (8,200 kg/min) at take-off power

Specific fuel consumption: 1.9 lb/lbf (190 kg/kN) per hour

Thrust-to-weight ratio: 5.23 lbf/lb (0.0513 kN/kg)

I always try to track the birds with my lens and save a few images for the buffer even after they make their catch. They typically do something really cool, like look at their fish, eat it mid-air, or even drop it. It is very entertaining. www.troymarcyphotography.com

A lucky shot. I thought I hadn't got anything unitl I checked the images on computer. Thin hazy clouds were scudding across the face of the sun. No detail on most of the shots. I had to pounce on the shutter in the occasional clearer looking spot, and was in a hurry in case the clouds thickened and the opportunity was gone. So I had to rely on AF to get the sun in focus, never the best idea with this camera & lens combination at least. The lens is Sony's 500mm f8 reflex lens. In good conditions and properly focused it catches sunspots sharper than this.

Shot with two very cheap XCSource 10 stop filters over the lens. There's a lot of doomy talk on the web about burning a hole in your in your sensor if you use cheap non-astro filters with unknown IR stopping power. So I tested the IR stopping capabilities of these filters and proved to my own satisfaction that they stopped at least several stops each of IR.
