La tela, supporto della pittura, è materiale poco prezioso e deteriorabile (il panno acotonato dello inferno). Nella disputa tra le arti e su quale sia la più nobile, confronto richiesto da Benedetto Varchi nel 1546 ad un gruppo di artisti suoi contemporanei, la scultura è l'arte che utilizza la materia più pregiata. Ma anche il marmo è fragile! Alla fine, nella risposta di Pontormo, l'arte più nobile è quella che sta alla base di tutte le altre: il DISEGNO!

Part of a series of gestural sketches of dancers in situ, done while watching dance students practice their craft. They are quick 1 to 2 minute sketches using a stylus and tablet with a laptop and Adobe Illustrator. All were done at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver, Canada as part of the Salon Series.

I'm practicing filling up my sketchbooks before i invest in any more. This is from my dancer gesture sketchbook. It's a cool gray strathmore receyled paper. I spent the entire day trying to fill up most of the 80 sheets. It was tough because the gray tone isn't the most inviting but I had to push through it. Although i've never taken any formal anatomy drawing classes i know that gesture drawing is about the free flow and demonstrating the movement within the sketch.
I wanted to try something different with showcasing the shadow so i used a blue watercolor pencil and a white charcoal pencil for highlights. The figure was outlined with a pentel stylo pen. You can't tell in the picture but there is a faint swipe of red watercolor pencil on her cheeks, chin and forehead. I may redo this image i like the motion and the facial expression.
It was the 1st day of school at Lincoln Elementary, Cedar Falls, Iowa, August 25, 2010, 8:30 AM. Kids & their parents were streaming down the sidewalks towards the crossings at Clay & 6th, where the new 6th graders, given the responsibility of serving as crossing guards, were doing an exemplary job under the watchful supervision of the teacher in white.
