Acrylic monotype.

This is my first try at adding color to a Gelli plate laser transfer. I first made a high contrast half tone laser print. I printed it twice to add toner density. I transferred the image to the Gelli plate using black acrylic paint and let it dry. I then added color in layers on top of the black and let each layer dry before adding the next layer. I dried the whole thing for about an hour before applying the final layer of white. While it was still wet, I put down the printing paper, weighted it with books, and let it dry for about three hours.

This being my first one I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleased that most of the paint stuck to the paper, the layering worked, and I got a decent print.

Gelli Arts gel plate, Hammermill Premium Color Copy paper printed twice in a Brother laser printer. Black Amsterdam Standard acrylic paint, Turner Acryla Gouache, Golden Titanium White Fluid acrylic mixed with Golden Soft Gel (Matte) gel medium. Printed on Sennelier Oil Pastel 340 g. paper. Image is about 7x5 inches (17.5x12.5 cm).

Today I tried using flowers from the garden as stamps on a gel plate. Several of them were wet from this morning's rain and didn’t make good impressions. I used a flattened out piece of crumpled up wax paper to vary the texture of the background layer.

Sometimes after the first print, a line of ink is left around the border of your shape, and you can pull a ghost print like this.

Some monoprints I made with the Gelli Plate this past weekend. Most will be used as backgrounds for my art journal.

Gelli botanic monotypes. I love that they approach the look and feeling of old daguerrotypes - but in color.

These were made by ink the plate, pressing the botanical onto the plate and then either lifting the botanical - or not - before printing. The "composites" are two separate prints (foreground/background of same botanical in same position) that were combined digitally.

A Gelli plate is a commerically made gelatin-type plate for monoprint/monotyping that makes it very very easy to pull prints without a press. I got one in January of last year and had loads of fun playing with different techniques. Tempera Paint stick gel plate monotype.

A quick experiment to see if tempera paint sticks work on a gel plate. Image is about 6x3.5 inches (15x8 cm).

Once I’m set up, these go pretty fast. Same process as the last one. Different color choices. After printing from the gel plate, I went back in with a small brush and added some glazes and detail while the paint was still wet on the palette.

Mixed printmaking technique: block print and gelli plate.

I *think* what I did here was:

- Cut into a rubber "linoleum" block.

- Ink the gelli plate

- Use the block to lift ink off the gelli plate

- Print the gelli plate

That means the final image is in the same "direction" as the cut block.

About 4 X 5 block on 5X7 gelli.

The imagery is actually derived from the plant shadow pieces...

Monotype with acrylic on vintage cook book page

Gelli monoprint/monotype on paper (I believe the ones made with stencils are monoprints, since I can use the stencil to pull multiples, while the ones where I painted directly on the plate are monotypes because there is only one full print, and maybe a ghost print.)

The abstract pieces are part of my Sun Dances series derived from plant shadows; they were made by arranging paper 'left overs' after cutting out plant shapes (eg the shapes of the holes in the leaves)

The variations on the dancers and dogs were made with shapes cut specifically for the purpose... and some of the 'leftovers' from those cut-outs.

The botanicals are made by rolling ink/paint on the plate, pressing the botanical item onto the plate, and then lifting, then putting paper on the plate and pressing to transfer.

Here are a few small art panels I made by watering down acrylic paint and then using a brush to paint it on the Gelli Plate and pulling off the print on white, unlined index cards. Once dry, I stamped the panels with black permanent ink.
