Gelli botanic monotypes. I love that they approach the look and feeling of old daguerrotypes - but in color.
These were made by ink the plate, pressing the botanical onto the plate and then either lifting the botanical - or not - before printing. The "composites" are two separate prints (foreground/background of same botanical in same position) that were combined digitally.

A Gelli plate is a commerically made gelatin-type plate for monoprint/monotyping that makes it very very easy to pull prints without a press. I got one in January of last year and had loads of fun playing with different techniques. I started off with Cathy’s suggestion to paint some pages, so I used up some gouache on my palette from a previous session. While I was waiting for them to dry, I started experimenting with the Gelli Plate… I had been wanting to try it with soft pastels and it was quite fun but as a result of experimenting I didn’t finish the day with any finished work.
Gelli plate charcoal transfer monotype.
I did another gel plate print today. This time I tried a charcoal transfer. I did a charcoal drawing on paper, laid it on the plate, and burnished the back with a baren. This transfers the charcoal to the plate. The charcoal sticks to the plate so well that I can paint with acrylic over the top. In the print this becomes the background. I let that dry and then did a final coat of white paint and while it was still wet I put down the printing paper and burnished the back and weighted it down with books and let it dry for several hours. I then carefully pulled back the paper to reveal the image. I’m impressed with how well this works. I really like the look. The neat thing about this method is that the charcoal sticks to the paint and does not smudge. I don’t have to use a spray fixative. The other neat thing is I did the drawing using grape vine charcoal that I made myself in our wood stove. Image is about 8x6 inches (20x15 cm).
Happy Spring Equinox! For the past year or so, I have marked the changing of the seasons with a mixed media print. Let's hope that this spring brings us some renewal, hope and joy! 5x7 Mixed Media monoprint, linocut, ink, acrylic and magic on Paper.

Acrylic gel plate monotype.
I tried some new techniques on the the gel plate today. Took me about an hour. I tried different ways to make lines - a Sharpie pen, an Inktense Pencil and Block, and scraping back to reveal another layer. I also tried blowing at wet acrylic with a straw and painting with an old hair brush. I got some interesting textures. Image is 5x7 inches (12.7x17.8 cm).
Welcome Spring! I ran out of time yesterday and now I am a day late with my traditional Equinox/Solstice mixed media celebration. 5x7 Monoprint, lino print, acrylic, ink and magic.
Gelli monoprint/monotype on paper (I believe the ones made with stencils are monoprints, since I can use the stencil to pull multiples, while the ones where I painted directly on the plate are monotypes because there is only one full print, and maybe a ghost print.)
The abstract pieces are part of my Sun Dances series derived from plant shadows; they were made by arranging paper 'left overs' after cutting out plant shapes (eg the shapes of the holes in the leaves)
The variations on the dancers and dogs were made with shapes cut specifically for the purpose... and some of the 'leftovers' from those cut-outs.
The botanicals are made by rolling ink/paint on the plate, pressing the botanical item onto the plate, and then lifting, then putting paper on the plate and pressing to transfer.

printing with linocut, gelliplate, plants and leaves on paper
leaves and plants found on the streets, parts of the street map of Neufahrn, paper partly dyed with plants or ink
Based on the Lepidodendron Fossil which forms the coal measures here in County Durham (UK) but a friend commented that it reminded him of celtic jewellery - hence grew the title. It's a monoprint from a collagraph plate made on a gelliplate. Managed to get some detail but really needs a press. Later :-)

Gelli plate monotype using cut paper masks and acrylic paint.
I think the textures are interesting though technically the result of too much, or too wet paint.
Experimented more with Gelli plate laser transfer. I’m not getting what I wanted, but it is an interesting result. This time I let the transfer dry on the plate and then I applied white gesso over it, put paper down, weighted with books, let it dry for an hour and pulled the print.
Partially inked beachcombed feathers on a gelli plate during a printing session. Oft times the plate is more interesting than the prints :-)

Mixed Media Exploration to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox 2020 - monoprint, linocut, ink, acrylic and magic
Acrylic gel plate monotype.
I experimented with drawing with a brush pen on the plate and then once it was dry adding colors behind the line drawing. I like the bold look and colors. Image is 5x7 inches.

Some monoprints I pulled this weekend with the Gelli Plate. I'll be using them as backgrounds in my art journal.
Blogged about here:
Acrylic gel plate monotype.
Seems like whenever I try to do a strictly abstract painting, it always come out looking like a landscape. I never know what I’m going to get until I pull the print. All these complex interactions between layers of paint happen without direction. I’m getting to the point where I know what colors to choose, where to place paint to get a good structure, which tool to use in what order, and how long to wait for paint to dry between layers, but what happens exactly is a mystery. I do these bigger on the plate so I have some choice as to where to place the paper when I pull the print. Image is about 4x4 inches.
Fabriano Hot Press watercolor paper, Holbein and Turner Acryla Gouache, 1 inch silicone painting brush, 1/2 inch angle brush, #8 round brush, 1/2 inch bristle brush, and palette knife. Image is about 4x4 inches (10x10 cm).
Finally getting back to uploading my Gelli plate monoprints from January, 2016.

The print was made by painting directly on the plate, and then pulling the print. The inverse was inverted in Photoshop.
