Gelli plate monotype
5 X 7 inches (printed area)
From life/observation/mirror
A Gelli plate is a commerically made gelatin-type plate for monoprint/monotyping that makes it very very easy to pull prints without a press. I got one in January of 2016 and had loads of fun playing with different techniques. You can google for more info on Gelli printing, this link looks pretty good: keetonsonline.wordpress.com/2013/05/16/all-about-gelli-pl...
Sometimes accidents help. In this case the paper stuck to the plate and tore creating unintended white spaces. I think it helped the composition.
This is a three layer monotype done on a gel plate. In the first layer I experimented with using a glass dip pen and a small brush to make black and white lines directly on the plate. After that dried, I applied gray paint with a small brush and the heel of my hand. I also tried sprinkling on charcoal dust by scraping a charcoal pencil on sandpaper held over the plate. Finally after that layer dried, I rolled on the beige background and while it was wet, I placed the paper onto the plate and weighed it down with books and let it dry for three and a half hours. That was too long and was probably why the paper stuck to the plate. I like the variety of textures and lines and shapes not wholly designed by me, but by happy accidents.

'Floor' a mixture of gelliplate printing and some old lino blocks - motif is taken from the fossilised tree bark of the Lepidodendron. It's what the coal measures hereabouts were formed from.

This was a blast to create. Really pleased with the process and I am looking forward to trying more. Graphite drawing on one of my monoprints.
i went a wee bit crazy while experimenting with techniques and most of my prints ended up muddy looking.... but i ended up with a lot of fun textures and jumping off points!
here's a before and after of the fishy print.
Thank you Carla for the inspiration!
Gelli plate monotype and (digital) collage?
I'm guessing here because it's been more than a year... this is definitely from a gelli plate but why did I call it collage? Maybe this was put together digitally (or with glue!) from two separate prints. Or the figure might be the paper used as a mask in making the other prints. Not sure...
