I pulled the top off my road ranger gearbox it is rather rusty and wont turn any ideas on what to do about it . It had been reconditioned not long before it was removed from the truck it was in.But I believe it has sat in a shed for quiete a few years.

One of my Christmas presents this year was Lego set 42055, the bucket wheel excavator, and I thought it was high time to get building!

 

I've spent a few hours this weekend on it and I've got halfway through, with four of the eight steps complete, though I'm far from halfway through the 500+ page build manual!

 

This appeared in stage 4 and is the first and simpler of the two gearboxes in this model.

 

I've been building Lego for not far off forty years, and I can do most of it in my sleep. I do confess though that I get nervous about gearboxes.

 

The gearboxes are fantastically complicated and require tremendous accuracy when building. If you use a part that's even slightly wrong, insert a cog the wrong way round or space something incorrectly it can flat out not work. Even if you get all of that right, if you pinch any of the parts too tightly then the aggregated friction can cause judder and poor operation.

 

Because Lego Technic models are always designed to work as closely to the real thing as possible (they're an incredible educational engineering toy) the gearbox is always buried right at the heart of the model and the amount of dismantling required to debug a gearbox can be heartbreaking.

 

I've twisted the input shafts on this one and it looks like the output seems to do what is required, so fingers crossed it will be ok.

Most of bag 7 went into assembling the gearbox. It drives the caterpillar tracks when the excavator and conveyor are not going. The top can rotate only when the excavator is running.

The conveyor also acts as a drive belt for the bucket wheel.

Spotted this very rare to see Datsun 280ZX, even rarer given its got the 5speed Manual gearbox. It was for sale for £7000. The interior and exterior is excellent, it was with the same family until in the SouthEnd Essex area since new. The interior is immaculate, i started the car and the engine is strong. Still got the factory original key and the seller was keen to show the full size leather wrapped spare tyre from the factory that was never used. Got power steering, windows, locks but no air con. The weather was miserable, constant fine drizzle and the tight spaces made taking pictures difficult. As far as spotting Nissan is concerned, this 280ZX was a breath of fresh air, such a shame that such whole some and solid Nissan / Datsuns are so rare and the boring plastics plentiful

Brian is seen here testing the custom alloy spacer which is fitted behind the gearbox oil filter. This spacer pushes the filter down into the new deep performance oil pan. Sadly the spacer is a few mm too deep and will need to be machined down to allow for the correct clearance.

The PC23 has a sequential gearbox operated by a barrel much like a motorcycle. The barrel is rotated by the indexing mechanism operated by the gear linkage.

this part of the engine is rarely seen because it is usually concealed in centre of the engine. it is only visible when the housing for the gears is opened for examination for repair.

Fiat, gear box mounted and about to have the rear wooden frame sent off for the bodywork to be fitted to it. The closest handle is the reverse gear, the one further back is an oil pump.

Hi all, a quick snapshot from the job.For those who don`t know, I`m in Egypt for the next couple of weeks for work. Exchanging gears and shafts on a 31yr old ship. As you can see this is a big mofo. The cover weighs over a (metric) ton and the shaft allmost doubles it.

 

It`s relativeliy quiet regarding the politics but that could also be due to the fact that the vessel is drydocked in the largest naval base of Egypt. Currently there is a curfew on the base and more militairy presence in the streets.

 

Wifi is bad so I won`t be much online. Greeting and take care!
