Some of the highlights of our trip were the Civil War battlefields and cemeteries in Tennessee and Georgia. The most beautiful is the Shiloh Civil War Battlefield and National Cemetery in Tennessee. A beautiful place for a terrible struggle.

Hiking the Horseshoe and Mule Deer trails in Golden Gate Canyon State Park near Denver. This is Frazer Meadow, at about 9,100 feet of elevation.

OK, I give up. Why didn't he just drill through the gate two or three inches further down, and put the hinge a bit lower to match?

Update, 29 January 2017: for some strange reason, this picture, which never evoked very much interest when first posted, has gathered around 300 views in a few days, mostly on the search term 'contraption'. What's so interesting about contraptions, suddenly?

The Domitian gate sits close to the northern entrance to the ancient city of Hierapolis and consists of a series of three triumphal arches flanked by circular towers and was built by the proconsul Frontinius around the first century. The ruins lie near the Western Anatolian village of Pamukkale in Turkey.

One of many reminders of a civilization that thrived, reached a peak, then went into decline. Lessons to learn. One of many interesting sights in Syracuse, Sicily.

As always, thoughtful feedback, constructive criticisms, and suggestions are always appreciated. As always, I have used tools at my disposal to interpret the original raw file. Use of this photo without permission is not permitted.

A tall, ornate stone archway stands as a formal entrance to a sprawling estate. Wrought iron fencing extends from the heavy masonry pillars, separating the paved path from the rolling green hills beyond. The structure features classical architectural details, including a decorative finial atop the arch and sturdy stone blocks forming the gateposts.

It says "Gate" but what could it mean?

Chinese "Moon Gate". On the top is a seat for a trained monkey. When someone came to the gate the monkey would run to the house to inform them that they have a visitor. We have a door bell

The Golden Gates of Kiev is a fortification that was part of the ancient city walls. It was built in the 11th century by Yaroslav the Wise, Grand Prince of Kiev, but subsequently fell into disrepair and was buried underground.

The Gates Center for Computer Science is one of the newest buildings at Carnegie Mellon and contrasts with the campus's more traditional structures, although the hillside location allows it to fit better with its surroundings than one might expect. Carnegie Mellon has one of the most attractive urban campuses I have seen.

Brandenburg Gate & fountain

These gates are the main entrance from Downtown Bloomington to Indiana University and are part of the impressive campus "crescent." I was fortunate enough to catch a nice sunset through the gates the night I took this.
