A gate in the New Forest, Hampshire, surrounded by ferns and other foliage, turning wonderful colours as the season moves in the UK from Summer to Autumn.

After Gates of Memories it is now time for Gates of Dreams.

The future belong to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

The recent devastating fires on the Rhodes island (and elsewhere in Southern Europe) made me think back to my old trip to Rhodes. Even though I have not visited the areas affected by the fires. This is my first experiment in uploading scanned images; it would be another year before I switched to digital.

Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO Heritage Site. It boasts very well preserved city walls and many of the impressive buildings constructed by the Knights Hospitaller of St. John when they held the island from 1310 to 1522. Compared to Malta, which was the next base for the knights, Rhodes is more rugged and gritty - and, yes, older. The D'Amboise gate (named after the Grand Master who completed the gate in 1512 in the anticipation of an Ottoman assault) is the most sophisticated part of the city walls.

A trip to Hells Gate Lighthouse situated at the dangerous narrow and shallow entrance to Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania. 'Hells Gate', however, was so-called by the convicts shipped there after British colonisation where some places in Australia were used as harsh penal colonies.

The one here was Sarah island, the notorious Macquarie Harbour Penal Station (1822-1833), housing the so-called 'worst' convicts, those who had reoffended or who had escaped from other settlements. It was separated from the mainland by the wide expanse of river, surrounded by a mountainous wilderness and was hundreds of miles away from the colony's other settled areas. Impossible to escape in any durable way.

Indeed, the only mob of convicts, who actually escaped the penal settlement, when in the dense forest (or bush) ran out of food, and ended up eating each other in desperation of being unable to get very far and in not wanting to return to the jail to get mercilessly flogged. The one surviving convict was eventually caught and hanged. See the film "Van Diemen's Land" (the early name for Tasmania): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Diemen%27s_Land_

New week, new theme

This week 7x Prague.

Managed to get this shot of the iconic gate when there was almost no one around. It pays to get up early!!!

Position: The Písek Gate is a former part of the Baroque fortification system of Prague known as the Marian Walls. The gate was built in 1721 by architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandim.

The absolute top of an old gate close to the temple Zoujou-ji. This is Somon (惣門), built in the early Edo period and once leading to the mausoleum of the second Edo shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada (徳川 秀忠) who died in 1632 - and the triple hollyhock crest is the symbol of the Tokugawa clan. The mausoleum itself has not survived.

The open gate says welcome ....and I would have loved to gone into this beaten-up old house but despite the open gate somehow it looked threatening!

Happy Fence Friday -- and have a great weekend too!

The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, built on the orders of Prussian king Frederick William II after restoring the Orangist power by suppressing the Dutch popular unrest. One of the best-known landmarks of Germany, it was built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel, which used to be the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

It is located in the western part of the city centre of Berlin within Mitte, at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building, which houses the German parliament (Bundestag). The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, a boulevard of linden trees which led directly to the royal City Palace of the Prussian monarchs.

Throughout its existence, the Brandenburg Gate was often a site for major historical events and is today considered not only as a symbol of the tumultuous histories of Germany and Europe, but also of European unity and peace.

One of the originally three city gates to the German town of Wittstock. This is Gröper Tor (Gröper Gate), dating to the 14th century - and with the pyramid roof added in 1503. The street now runs next to the gate to the right, which it has done for at least 200 years.

A gate is a point of entry to a space enclosed by walls, or an opening in a fence. Gates may prevent or control entry or exit, or they may be merely decorative. Other terms for gate include yett and port.

Larger gates can be used for a whole building, such as a castle or fortified town, or the actual doors that block entry through the gatehouse. Today many gate doors are opened by an automated gate operator
