The reconstructed garden at Kenilworth, originally built by Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester) for Elizabeth I. The original aviary was filled with all manner of exotic birds, but in today's eco-conscious world they're mainly finches.

New view - neighbours tree coming down

I took the opportunity to re-do the step from the drive into the garden. Previously the builders had done it so messily. Here I have used some facing bricks to neaten it up.

OMG we're getting into plants..

Must be getting old.

all we need to do now is to wait for the sand to settle and then in go the water lilies.

the plants in the red bath behind are bearded iris - browny colour from memory - they've lived for the last 9 years at my mum's place in the big white bath (now hidden around the side of the house to the right of this pic)

Now for the tomato seeds, we alternated home collected cherry tomato seed and bought seed for a dwarf red tomato... by this time the kids had prety much lost interest, we started before lunch and now it is mid afternoon...

Hodsock Priory near Blyth has a snowdrop tour every year. In spite of its name it was never a priory. And the gateway is the only authentic bit dating before the Victorian era.

My mahonia are growing, preparing for winter flowering

Voila! And even the sun came out.

So somehow, I managed to neglect that garden enough so that it no longer resembles the original state I found it. The giant manhood has gone though which I manged to do while cheered on by both sets of neighbours. Anyway three years have passed since I moved in and I have 2 weeks off work to get cracking...

Classical design maze cut into the turf at Wing in Rutland. It is believed to date from medieval times. No-one is sure what purpose they served but it is possibe that they coud have been used a prayer routes for reigious penitents who went round them on their knees.
