it is amazing to me how much we throw away. besides the cost (garbage removal alone would pay for a small house) there are so many usuable pieces of lumber, metal, gyproc and insulation that really don't need to be in a landfill. because of the public investment in this project, our staff have refrained from salvageing materials, keeping more arms length, although it has been good to see others pull out material and reuse it.

there's a woman in winnipeg who is buiding an inexpensive and energy efficent house (utilizing some salvaged material) she's been an inspiration to some of our present and former staff. you can read about her project @ www.mbherald.com/45/08/houseruth.en.html

found tonight on 5th ave in a plastic bag. they are less than a week old. so far, doing ok.

April 8th (I think!) Found the box of cards that I thought I had lost. The kid had them! I now am housing them for ....her? hahah. My fav...Clogged Duane (wasn't shecute, marking her cards so no one would accidently walk off with them).

Scavengers in garbage city shelters sift through more than 1000 tons of garbage in the patch every day. From the large quantity of the trash, scavengers still can find recyclable items and resell them.
