Typically Danish. My son in third grade had a class on Design today, discussing design, form and functionality. They had to make some packaging for a product that was handy and that showed the product inside.
He made a beer can carrier/holder. That's my boy.
On Camp Casey in Dongducheon May 1, officials of the U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the grand re-opening of the Carey Physical Fitness Center, which had been closed since October for a $1.8 million renovation. The newly redone facility includes a greatly enlarged weight room dedicated to free weight workouts, a fully renovated court for basketball and volleyball, private rather than the former communal showers, a modern, functional sauna room, newly re-done aerobics and spin cycle rooms, and a trophy room to showcase unit sports achievements, among other improvements. Also scheduled as part of the grand re-opening was a cake-cutting, and later, a basketball tournament and an awards ceremony. Haven't had this much fun sketching on a project in a long time. the company (confederate motorcycles) was said to embrace a pure, minimalist, and rogue approach to design and all their products have a bare machined aesthetic. I really like drawing machined parts and very harsh, purely functional forms, so this was right up my alley.

4th Ring Formula Saga -- A FUNCTIONAL ring.
So I had a relentless roving sore throat that eventually turned into a relentless cough. The 2 worked nicely together. I coughed about every 2 to 3 minutes for about 4 days, making the sore throat even sorer. It was the kind where you were afraid to go to bed, because if you didn't time it right you didn't get to go to sleep. By timing it right, I mean the right combination of night time cough syrup, ibuprofen and cough drops to get you into bed and asleep before you started coughing. I slept upright on the couch a couple of nights.
I usually don't buy regular medicine, I think it's better not to suppress a cough, but this thing was so intense that one morning I found myself at Rite Aid in the cold and flu aisle buying cough syrup and cough drops. Later that day I was a little disturbed to find out I had bought children's Robitussin. I needed the good stuff. The next day, I wanted to get to the drug store earlier to get a better supply of cough medicine. However, I wasn't quite as out of it as I was the day before, and read the labels on the medicines.
I remembered why I didn't buy them. Most of them had as a 2nd ingredient, high fructose corn syrup (in addition to a bunch of scary and bizarre chemicals)! Well, I had been avoiding ice cream and candy because I know it's not good for you if you're sick, but in the mean time I'm sucking it down in my cough syrup and cough drops! Well, I couldn't bring myself to buy any more and went to the health food store next door and got some homeopathic cough syrup with hardly any sugar and some Ricola (which were good, but didn't hold a candle to the Sucrets!) I don't think the homeopathic cough syrup worked.
I'd keep thinking I was getting better (cuz I'm such an optimist) but this thing was so relentless. I spent most of my time watching every movie known to man and visualizing my functional ring. As my sickness progressed the picture kept getting clearer and clearer or maybe I was just clearly delusional.
First, I saw a ring with a Sucret set into it, with writing stamped on the band and then I kept seeing a metal vessel to hold my cough syrup. So today I really did feel better and got to make my rings!
The Sucrets Ring kind of reminds me of reminds me of Superman. I know Sucrets became my hero this past week! On the band is stamped "Suppresses Cough" and "Serious Sore Throat Relief."
The cough syrup ring is my favorite. On the middle of the band in small stamps is "Do not take more than 4 doses in any 24 hour period." And in bigger stamps above and below the other writing is the 2 main ingredients in cough syrup an antihistimine "Chlorpheniramine Maleate" and a cough suppressant "Dextromethorphan HBr." On the cup is stamped with a line around the top "1 Teaspoon" and then below that I stamped some of the disgusting ingredients in cough syrup -- "saccharin, corn syrup, FD&C red 40"
But best of all, I am feeling better today! Still coughing, but at least it doesn't hurt!!
FiberKlunk™ is a new line of metal (klunk) and fiber (fabric) jewelry, sculpture and functional art designed and created by Michael Ricci of Rustic Hut Designs.
This unique FiberKlunk pendant entitled, Kyoto Rain Plum, is made from lead-free pewter, copper wire, beads, aluminum rivets, and vintage kimono silk from Japan. The pendant itself is 5cm (2") high and 5cm (2") long.
Process: I modeled this little torii gate out of wood and wire, then made a silicon mold of that and cast it in pewter. From there the wire, beads (rain drops), rivets and silk were added along with a cotton cord and clasp. The antique kimono silk has a very subtle plum flower design and compliments the satin sheen of the pewter wonderfully.

When picking objects from my journal I decided to use the umbrella, hairdryer, and a bottle of shampoo. The idea of this hyper functional tool is that the user can go outside when it’s raining get his/her hair wet, wash his/her hair with the shampoo,and lastly go under the umbrella ,and blow dry his/her hair. To create the shampoo bottle ,and the hairdryer I cut circles using the jigsaw ,and the hole saw ,and then laminated them together.(On the hair dryer, I carved into the “spout” of it to show how the grill lays in it.) To create the umbrella I bought a dowel for the umbrella rod ,due to insufficient amount of wood left, and cut ⅛ of an inch on four 36” long pieces to make the frame of the umbrella.I sanded them down even more knowing that that thinner they were the more flexibility they’d be for bending. On Thursday/Friday ,to get the pieces to bend, I placed all four 36” pieces in a bathtub with warm water(first used my practice one-which turned out close to successful didn’t ben as much as I wanted) ,and let them soak for about an hour. Then I bent them into a horseshoe shape ,using rubber bands to get them to stay there. To keep them from floating to the top, I set little weights on top of the rubber bands holding them down. However, when taking off the rubber bands the next day they went back to being straight ,and one of them cracked in half.
Instead of using the bending technique, on Saturday I cut the pieces of wood in half with the chop saw ,and created 4, 90 degree angles with them, overlapping them on top of the dowel by lamentation ,and used hot glue on the outside of the lamentation, since I couldn’t get them to stay on the dowel with a clamp. After it dried I peeled off the hot glue to leave just the wood glue. Before adding the plastic top, I painted the shampoo bottle/ hairdryer to have them look like the real objects themselves ,and then laminated them to the dowel. For the shampoo bottle I created a shelf to lay the bottle on it ,and put a rod to connect the shelf to the shampoo bottle ;that way the shampoo bottle can be removed, put back, and spun around. Lastly, when adding the plastic to the top of the umbrella I experimented with cellophane, clear plastic lamination, and a clear shower curtain. I found the shower curtain to be the most sturdy. Overall, I thought the project turned out a lot better than I thought considering I was a little nervous to use the saws and work with unfamiliar tools. I liked making this project the most compared to the others and learned a lot about how to work with the wood with all the trial and errors I went through. I’d still like to try to get the wood to bend for future woodworking ,because I think that the umbrella would have looked more clean cut and even. However with lack of time ,and limited resources for cutting more thin strips I think the outcome of the product still looks good.

Kris and I give each other very functional gifts for holidays and anniversaries. The Breville Juicer was a Christmas gift to each other and we use it every single day... It is very easy to use - we just throw the veggies and fruits in the top and it comes right out the side. One of my favorite things to do is add fresh juice into a blender cup with banana, nuts, and soft tofu with a little bit of almond or soy milk - blend it lightly for a minute and delicious fresh smoothie!
Fresh carrot/apple/pear/ginger juice, anyone?
