Surreal circles

The Irondequoit Bay Marine Park begins at the end of Peart Avenue, and follows the woodline down to the bay. From the edge of the woods I could see down to bay. The ice on the near side had this strange circles along the edge. I assume they were natural since the ice wasn't thick enough for anyone to be cutting donuts with a car.

I needed to take a walk and I needed to finish the roll of film so I could develop and scan it. I walked north along Peart Avenue then down toward the lake and bay.

The amazing thing is that Anastasia, tied to the stationary mike, barely moved during the five or ten-minute exposure. She is almost recognizable.

The next photograph to be taken was of the ghosts of Anastasia's Fan Club.

A sense of holy awe

After the morning worship service, a few Sundays ago at Rochester Christian Reformed Church. This would have been better tilted up just a bit. I'm used to the Ondu 6x6 which is wide angle both horizontally and vertically. The field width lines are laser-inscribed on the top and side of the camera; I need to remember to use the vertical guides.

I scanned this first roll at 2400 dpi, my usual for medium format. The native format Gimp xcf from the scan is 174 mb. The final jpg is 30 mb. Big.

If I want a long walk at Durand Eastman Park that does not follow the lakes, I take the yellow ski trail. It winds its way up and down the hills and ridges around the golf course. In the winter it is a one way trail due to one steep stretch where mixing directions would be a very bad idea -- and where it would be dangerous going down unless one really knew what they were doing.

It was good to be back out with the Brick. The film is long-outdated Kodak Gold 200 cross-processed in D76. It gives a low-contrast negative needing a lot of contrast expansion in the Gimp. It would be tricky to print in a darkroom, methinks.

The forest in my back yard.

It happens from time to time that I want to develop a roll of film but have a few shots left. At which point I go wandering around the back yard taking photographs of the same old stuff but not, I hope, in the same old way. The light that afternoon demanded that I look up and see how it filtered through the leaves and splashed against the trunk. It's just one tree but it felt like I was looking up through a forest canopy.

The image consists of two scans of the same negative, top and bottom, the boundary being the base of the far treeline. I did the dust and spot cleanup for the bottom half; the top got left as is. The dust must have been inside the camera; it isn't from the scanning this time. This was the first frame on the roll.

The ice across from the Middle Falls

I moved a few yards from the previous vantage point and turn the camera downriver. The wall by the road is still visible in the top left. The dark area in the lower right is the only part of the bowl that is not iced over.

With one frame left on the roll, I knew what it had to be. The walkway and endless staircase to the top of the bridge were closed due to the severely treacherous ice. So many photographs I have from this wall. They are all different.

Then it was time for music and a brew at Dublin Corners.

This is the same negative as the previous version, but scanned on my Epson V500. With the Phoenix 200 V1 in 35mm, I could not get a decent scan. With the medium format, I got truer color myself than did Scott's scanner. I have had others tell me the 120 was much less wonky than the 35mm. I have to agree.

Pictober 26 - Mutation -- with story

This started out as a long-exposure pinhole photograph of one of my stock Argus C3 Brick and one I modified as a pinhole photograph. "Mutation", ok?

Then there was the "inaudible" photograph of my hearing aids in the bottom of a beer goblet with my Mini-Mag flashlight aimed at the base.

Haven't a clue which shot came first. But it is a far more mutant mutation than I had planned. Such is life in my back yard.
