Pictober 18 - Utopia

Utopia - an ideally perfect place, especially in its social, political, and moral aspects - exists only in approximation. It struck me that an important first step in finding such approximations is learning to be happy where one is right now, recognizing the faults and limitations but choosing to be happy in spite of them. Call it a restless contentment.

I lay down in the back yard and pointed the camera straight up. We rather like our little place. It's not perfect, it always needs work, but it will do.

Hiking the Power Line Trail at Letchworth State Park. The trail meanders back and forth across the power line cut from the road to the top of the bluff by the Genesee River.

The suspended globes are to make the lines visible to low-flying aircraft.

A surreal day in the neighborhood - C

The Ondu 6x6 and I went out for a walk on an Autumn afternoon.

The dynamic range with this film Harman Phoenix II is better than with version 1 but still not wonderful. Combined with the normal corner fall-off of the Ondu 6x6, it made for dramatic vignetting.

Inspiration Point with the 100mm lens

I discovered (by opening the back cover!) that I still had a roll of Ilford Delta 100 film loaded in the Argus C3 with the 100mm lens. The last photographs I have posted with that lens are from 2014, so it has been a while. Unfortunately, after I closed the camera back up, I remembered "400" instead of "100', meaning I had to guesstimate a two-stop push when I developed it. Such is life.

Anyway, when I realized I still had film in the camera, I knew I wanted to get it down to Letchworth State Park and Inspiration Point.

I needed to take a walk and I needed to finish the roll of film so I could develop and scan it. I walked north along Peart Avenue then down toward the lake and bay. I liked the trees overhead, silhouetted against the sky.

Frozen rainbow

The wall at the top of the frame is the same as as the one in the bottom of yesterday's post, but from the other side. In warmer weather it runs along the road back up from the Middle Falls area to the level of Glen Iris Inn. The park service does not try to keep it open in the winter; it is simpler and safer to send folks back up the way they drove down. The whole area is icy due to the constant mist rising from the falls and river below.

Also in warmer weather, there is a rainbow parked in this bowl as the sun shines through the mist. Hence the title.

Saturday, January 25. I drove down to Letchworth specifically to photograph the frozen waterfalls after a solid cold spell.

Dudhsagar Falls (literally Sea of Milk ) is a tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa on Goa's border with Karnataka state.As the cascading waters appear white like milk, the waterfall is called Dudhsagar, Doodh being the Hindi word for milk.

This is Corky's and my favorite winery of the three. The colors in the photograph may emphasize the incandescent glow, but they are just right. It's that sort of place.
