For a short time all mainline trains from eastern directions had to move from the newly built fastline tracks onto the old mainline tracks, now used by S-Bahn Hamburg, at Rothenburgsort station. For this intermediate periode they built a temporary connection between both lines. On this connection we observe IC 1936 / 736 from Rügen Island towards Köln.

EN: For some days we stayed in Mjølfjell Vandrerhjem in the lonelyness of upper Raundalen. That hostel has had its own railwaystation, situated highly above the valley ground. After climbing up to the halt called "Ørneberget" we expected the first train of the day: Lt 1840 from Voss to Flåm via Myrdal. Thank God the mist lightened a bit so that the driver could recognize us; Ørneberget was a stop on request. What changed in the past 25 years? Nearly nothing! Hostel and its halt are still alive, but instead of class El11 the traffic is operated by class Bm69 EMU (they were in traffic 1991 too!).

DE: Wir wohnten für einige Tage im Mjølfjell Vandrerhjem in der Einsamkeit des oberen Raundalen. Diese Jugendherberge hatte ihren eigenen Haltepunkt hoch oben am Hang. Nach einem steilen Anstieg hoch zum Ørneberget holdeplass erwarteten wir den ersten Zug des Tages: Lt 1840 von Voss nach Flåm über Myrdal. Zum Glück hatte sich der Nebel etwas gelichtet, so dass der Lokführer uns sehen und seinen Zug mit einer Vollbremsung zum stehen bringen konnte, denn Ørneberget hatte im Fahrplan die Fußnote "stopper om det trengs" / "hält, wenn es benötigt wird". Was hat sich in 25 Jahren geändert? Fast gar nichts! Das Hostel und der Haltepunkt sind noch in Betrieb, nur die El11 ging dann bald außer Dienst. Heute fahren hier ETs der Reihe Bm69, die es 1991 hier übrigens auch schon gab!

Wir beobachten als Nachschuss den RE 21635 zwischen Preetz und Ascheberg, der von der in ozeanblau/beige zurücklackierten 218 460 geschoben wird. Selbst aus dieser noch relativ spitzen Perspektive sind keine roten LEDs des Schlusssignals mehr erkennbar!

EN: It was not very easy to find this relative free spot between the lightly standing trees. Pt 2122 crosses Ribnica II Viaduct between the stations of Jablanica and Ribnica Slatiborska. This bridge is situated near Jablanica village in Serbia near the bosnian border.
DE: Es war gar nicht so einfach, an diesem Hang zwischen den licht stehenden Bäumen diesen einigermaßen freien Ausblick auf die Brücke zu bekommen. Pt 2122 quert zwischen den Stationen Jablanica und Ribnica Slatiborska den Ribnica II Viadukt. Der Viadukt befindet sich bei Jablanica in Serbien nahe der bosnischen Grenze.
EN: I never would have thought that I could present a class 251 / DE2700 / ME26 locomotive with DB as operator. But since all sheduled "married pair" wagons went out of traffic in November 2016, all RE trains Hamburg - Westerland run with different older cars. Therefore more locos are needed, because many trains have to be hauled top and tail. So there are still many 223 and even this 251 (former norwegian Di6) in operation, although DB overtook the traffic operation on this line in mid of December 2016. We see RE 11021 on the canal highbridge Hochdonn between Burg (Dithmarschen) and Wilster.
To get this shot I used a platform underneath the bridge at the bridgehead.
DE: Nie hätte ich gedacht, dass ich mal eine 251 / DE2700 / ME26 mit DB als EVU präsentieren könnte. Aber nachdem alle planmäßigen "married pair" Wagen im November 2016 außer Betrieb gingen, fahren alle REs Hamburg - Westerland mit verschiedenen älteren Wagen. Dafür werden mehr Loks benötigt, weil viele Züge als Sandwich gefahren werden müssen. So sind neben den planmäßigen SH-blauen 245 auch noch viele 223 und sogar diese 251 (ex norw Di6) im Einsatz, obwohl die DB den Verkehr Mitte Dezember 2016 übernommen hat. 251 010 schiebt ihren RE 11021 über die Hochdonner Hochbrücke zwischen Burg (Dithmarschen) und Wilster.
Der Fotostandpunkt befindet sich am Brückenkopf auf einer Plattform unter den Bahngleisen.

EN: Once this line was planned as mainline for trains from Berlin to Bremerhaven and as an additional way to Hamburg. But since the bridge over river Elbe at Dömitz was destroyed in worldwar 2, it is just a secondary railway with today only 5 pairs of trains during the whole day. RB 14542 is leaving the todays final station of this line, Dannenberg Ost, and returns to Lüneburg.
DE: Geplant war diese Strecke als Hauptbahn, um von Berlin direkten Weges nach Bremerhaven zu kommen. Nach Zerstörung der Dömitzer Elbbrücke im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde der verbleibende Rest jedoch zur Nebenbahn. Heute pendeln hier nur noch fünf Zugpaare. RB 14542 verlässt gerade den heutigen Endpunkt der Linie, Dannenberg Ost, und macht sich auf den Weg zurück nach Lüneburg.
EN: In the heart of the german capitol river Spree is always present. Between the stations Warschauer Straße and Schlesisches Tor the elevated metro line U1 crosses river Spree on Oberbaum bridge. Until reunion the river was the border at this point. Only walkers were allowed to cross the bridge. The very special architecture of the bridge wanted to show a symbolic town gate for the river.
DE: Mitten in Berlin ist die Spree nicht aus dem Stadtbild wegzudenken. Zwischen den Stationen Warschauer Straße und Schlesisches Tor überquert die U1 die Spree auf der Oberbaumbrücke. Bis zur Wende war hier die Grenze und bestenfalls Fußgänger durften die Brücke queren. Die spezielle Architektur soll ein Wasser-Stadttor symbolisieren.

EN: In the years after german reunion the former "public" companies of DDR went private. Their new born creativity knew no limits. One of these creative ideas was the double deck railbus by DWA. Why building up longer platforms? Let the railbus grew higher! As these vehicles made a lot of technical problems there were built no more than seven. DB used them in regular traffic until 2003. But anytime later the creative (east german!) little train company HANS (former EGP, former PEG) overtook two of these class 670 railbusses. We see 670 006 (DB/NVR number) / VT 670.3 (HANS number) as one of two regular trains in the lonely landscape of Prignitz between the stations of Blumenthal and Bölzke in the mid of nowhere.
DE: Eines der Produkte aus der Nachwendezeit, als die frisch privatisierten Firmen im Osten nur so vor kreativen Ideen strotzten, war der DWA Doppelstockschienenbus. Warum Bahnsteige verlängern, wenn der Schienenbus in die Höhe wachsen kann? Sieben Stück wurden gebaut, dann wurde alles weitere wegen all zu großer technischer Unzulänglichkeiten abgebrochen. Die DB setzte die Fahrzeuge bis 2003 ein, und seit einigen Jahren verwendet HANS (vormals EGP, vormals PEG) diese illustren Fahrzeuge auf ihren Strecken. Wir beobachten 670 006 (DB/NVR Nummer) / VT 670.3 als eine von zwei täglichen Regionalbahnen auf der Strecke Kyritz - Pritzwalk mitten im Nirgendwo zwischen den Bahnhöfen Blumenthal und Bölzke.
The local train leaves Chalkida along Gulf of Euböa on it's way to Athens. As there were not enough DMU in use, the train was built by modern Intercity wagons. In background you see Mount Dirfis with 1547m in height. It is situated on Euböa island. Today the line is electrified.

EN: Morely seen are red locos in green surrounding. But it's also possible vice versa. Here the green Rail 4 Chem class 145 haules it's train across Leine valley with its yellow and red coloured trees, here between the stations of Freden and Kreiensen.

EN: From Rübeland to Hüttenrode it's a very steep ascend. With locos top and tail a stone train from the quarries around Rübeland moves along Rübelandbahn. In the far distance the second high mountain of Harz Wurmberg is visible.
DE: Von Rübeland nach Hüttenrode geht es steil bergauf. Mit Loks vorn und hinten bewältigt ein belandener Zug von den Steinbrüchen rund um Rübeland gerade diesen Abschnitt. Ganz in der Ferne ist der Wurmberg, des Harzes zweithöchster und Niedersachsens höchster Berg, zu sehen.
EN: As long as the sheduled "Married Pair" Wagons are in repair, DB operates with older cars. RE 11013 is built by former DB Nachtzug and "Schleswig-Holstein Express" wagons, observed a bit north of Wilster.

EN: On BNSF Seligman Subdivision a stacktrain approaches from the west to the village that gave the name to the line, Seligman.
DE: Auf der BNSF Seligman Subdivision nähert sich ein Doppelstock Containerzug von Westen dem namensgebenden Ort, Seligman.
On this part of the norwegian Nordlandsbane there is no train moving during the whole six afternoon hours 12-18! That might be the reason, why nearly nobody takes photos along the lines middle section between Mosjøen and Steinkjer.
The 28.06.2003 had become a great day with a lot of sunshine, and we spent it south of Steinkjer, where the hourly Trønderbahn DMU operate. But after 6pm we made a longer step back north to that middle section. The daytrain from Bodø was expected and we found this nice viewpoint for it. It was past 19:00. Imagine a clear and silent summer evening. We observed anxiously the move of the clouds, but for a while we were safe! 19:34 was the departure time from Snåsa station, right behind the curve. 19:30. What kind of rumor is that from the north? Something was grumbling there, a very deep sound. Not near by, but well audible. Could it be the train in the station? That loudly and clearly audible? Four minutes early? Yes, it was! Exactly 19:34 we heared a whistle, not from the loco - it was the pipe of the train guard, who gave clear to the driver! Then a horn from the locomotive and the subliminal grumbling swoll up into loud thunder, and with a lot of noise the Di4 with its Dt 472 came round the curve. When the driver saw us, we got an extra portion from the horn in all available pitches while he greeted us joyfully with his hand.
Somehow this photo became my favourite one of a Di4 until today...

EN: The "wildest" railway line ever in Germany was the line from Velgast to Tribsees. Four times a day a passenger train made its way along the flower and grass covered track in the Northeast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Normally it was a class 772 DMU, but many times there came a loco with one passenger car. Train no 15305 passes Behrenwalde request halt without a stop.

DE: Die wildeste und eine meiner absoluten Lieblingsstrecken war sicherlich die Bahnstrecke Velgast - Tribsees, die Franzburger Südbahn. Viermal am Tag suchte sich ein Personenzug seinen Weg über ein vollkommen Gras und Blumen überwuchertes Gleis. Normalerweise kam eine 772 Ferkeltaxe zum Einsatz, doch oftmals wurde auf Lok und einen Wagen zurückgegriffen. N 15305 passiert den Bedarfshalt Behrenwalde ohne Stopp.

EN: The croatian railway rectified some kilometers of Lika line in the section across Lićko Polje. One of these kilometers can be found at Kruškovac. Lićko Polje is a great wilderness with only few villages. The war in the nineties raged terribly in this area, there is still a danger of mines here around. Freight 61314 is passing Kruškovac between the stations of Lovinac and Medak, where today a new platform is built. Nobody knows whatfor... The rock visible in the background is called "Zir" (850m).

DE: In der Lićko Polje hat die kroatische Eisenbahn einige Abschnitte der Likabahn begradigt. Eine solche Begradigung gibt es bei Kruškovac. Die Lićko Polje ist eine wilde, zerklüftete Ebene mit nur wenigen Dörfern. Viel ist hier im Krieg der neunziger Jahre zerstört worden. Noch immer muss man hier in der Nähe mit Minen rechnen. Güterzug 61314 passiert Kruškovac, wo es heute sogar einen Bahnsteig gibt - niemand weiß wofür. Der Fels im Hintergrund ist der Zir (850m).

DE 2700 09 is a double imported locomotive. The first import was by NSB, Norways state railway. NSB ordered 1992 from MaK in Kiel 12 machines of the Di6 type for all traffic on non electrified railways. But machines and NSB didn't like each other, and the result was that all Di6 left Norway some years later. All 12? No! One loco was missing, because it burned down before.
The remaining 11 Di6 started an odyssey across parts of Europe for several locopools. After working for the german NOB in passenger services between Hamburg and Westerland the 09 came a second time to Norway for the new operator Cargolink. For Cargolink the Di6 hauled ore trains between Ørtfjell and Mo i Rana on Nordlandsbanen. An empty ore train is observed at Grønfjelldal between the stations of Skonseng and Ørtfjell.
