Brainard Lake, Indian Peaks Wilderness, Colorado. For the previous few days, there had been numerous weather fronts moving through Colorado, and so it was a little tentative in planning for a good day of photography and hiking. The weather reports said that this day would herald a new front moving through, and indeed, this high area got a blast of fresh icy snow on the peaks and trees. What I didn't expect was how still it would be during sunrise and how ice free that Brainard Lake was. It made for a near perfect reflection. I took shots of this scene from "blue hour", then "alpenglow", and all the way to sunrise, and this was my favorite one of a number of really good images. Hope you enjoy, and thanks for looking!

DDC "Last One" - Shyla does this trick every time as if it's the last milk bone she'll ever get to eat. I wish that we humans could live with similar intensity!
After arriving literally just in time, me and the gang would chase this southbound Laurel to Denver manifest train, with an NS C44-9W trailing 2nd, from Highland CO to Niwot CO. Here we see that train with BNSF ET44C4 No. 3789 in the lead, departing Highland CO, reversing the SSS Longs Peak back to normal!

Shyla sat among the wildflowers looking out over a glorious meadow with the snowy Rocky Mountains on the horizon.
This is what I love. All of it. But Shyla most of all.

A male Downy Woodpecker waited his turn to visit our feeders on yet another snowy day.

DDC: Waiting. - I train my dogs to do rocket fast recalls by making them wait in a "stay" for a loooong time before I call them. The Labraduo responded with insane energy after a long wait today!
I stood out in the freezing cold, waiting for the moon to rise over the ridge to my east. It finally did, and it was beautiful!
The personalities of our two Labs shine through in this photo. R's intensity is undeniable, and Shyla's sensitivity seems hard to miss.
After I balanced a bunch of kibble pieces on Shyla's nose and forehead, she'd launch them. This photo shows that one occasionally landed in her mouth!

This was the instant when the first ray of sunlight hit us. I was as sleepy as Shyla was!

Our family tends to celebrate nature more than human holidays. So, our main tradition for this time of year is being out in the hills to witness the start of each day, sunrise.

I had a difficult time identifying this sparrow. Final verdict is an immature White-crowned Sparrow. A mature one is pretty easy to identify.

An amazing autumn day to watch this scenic view across Coot Lake of the Boulder Colorado Flatirons as the sun would go in and out of clouds on a cloudy day. At this point the tree start to stand out and they get a little sunlight on them,

Leaving Denver's western suburbs behind, Rio Grande GP40-2 3104 leads Amtrak F40PH 388 past the intermediate signal between West Leyden and East Rocky, Colorado on April 18, 1988.
Filling in for an ailing Amtrak F40 that was left behind, the GP40-2 has been added to westbound Amtrak Train #5, the California Zephyr, at Denver Union Station for the Denver-Salt Lake City leg of the run.
With thirteen cars on todays train, the two locomotives will have plenty of work ahead on the steady two percent up-hill climb to the Continental Divide at Moffat Tunnel.

Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado. This tree's buds began to open one day ago, about three weeks later than one year ago. Unfortunately, cold winds and snow arrived through the night. This image is was taken shortly after sunrise. Meanwhile, the remaining buds "held tight" today during yet another bout of frigid weather.
American Pikas are not rodents but are related to hares and rabbits. They are under pressure from climate change as they make their homes in the high alpine mountain regions. They do not hibernate so they store food for the winter. In the summer you will find them busily about collecting plants to bring to their dens.

DDC "Indications of the Season"
I think the autumn leaves that dominate the background are a wonderful sign of our waning autumn!

My friend's dog was out to play in the snow this afternoon. She's a beauty but she scares the heck out of Shyla. Shyla was hidng behind me.

DDC "Arrangement"
I asked Shyla to sprint and fly through the air for the photo, and she complied! Can you believe how high she is? My jaw dropped when I saw this photo.
I actually was very mindful of the background and my aperture, wanting Shyla's image to pop out and not be dwarfed by anything else. I love having the faintest hint of the snowy mountains in the background, like there is in this photo.
