Dramatic clouds, high mountains, sunlit valleys and stunted trees growing from rocks all seen near Deer Junction, Rocky Mountain National Park. On the left, Longs Peak, is the highest mountain (14,259 ft -- 4346 m) in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Happy Mountain Monday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

DDC "Good Luck"

I always consider a day when we get out at sunrise to be good luck. But, I was wrong on this day. I hurt my spine quite badly on this day, and I might need surgery. I have fallen hopelessly behind on everything since then. I wish it had been good luck.

Summit Lake, Mount Evans Wilderness, Colorado. For the past several days, summer storms had been the prevailing pattern along the Front Range of Colorado. By the time I arrived in the Mt. Evans Wilderness area, there was some low lying fog, but the night sky was clear and cloudless above. This was my first composition, and it was dark when I took this timed exposure. I love the way the colors stood out, accentuated by the remnant snowfields, in the blue hour twilight. A few hours later, the peaceful quietness of this scene was once again transformed by intense stormy weather. Thanks so much for looking, and have a great day!

365: The 2015 Edition (194/365)

I love my morning outings with Shyla. We mountain bike, we stop in pretty spots, and we play. This photo is from playing in the midst of the flowers.

DDC "Twas the Night Before..." - and a great big storm is brewing. You can see the clouds over the Divide behind Shyla and the winds lifting her ear to the sky. Tomorrow, we will get a big snow storm - perfect for Christmas!

Shyla, at the end of a glorious sunset.

DDC "Red"

I am pretty sure there's some red in that sky!

Here's a Colorado scene from back in the winter of 2008. A dusting of snow provides a nice contrast with the red rock at the Garden Of The Gods in Colorado Springs. Wind whipped Pikes Peak forms the imposing backdrop.

We had an inversion, with cold and cloudy conditions at lower elevations, and warm/sunny weather up at our elevation. It was fun watching the clouds creep toward us and then recede, all day long.

This dead scraggly young tree on the ridge is left lifeless from the Waldo Canyon Fire years ago.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is operating on the main line while climbing the foot hill grades to enter the Rocky Mountains front range where it will continue to gain altitude in Colorado, Summer 1980. Another person in the next vestibule dutch door window is seen observing the area. Again ties are laid down all along the foot hill grades where the MOW gangs are replacing defective ties.

Red-tailed Hawk the most common hawk in North America. This one happens to be flying over the Front Range of the Colorado southern Rocky Mountains.

DDC "Mulligan"

She missed despite an incredible effort to catch the treat that I tossed to her!

Boulder, Colorado

I first posted this as thistle, but a Flickr friend pointed out that they are teasel. Thank you, Eddie!

A field of vibrant sunflowers sees the close of another day while anxiously pointing east to await the coming sunrise.

DDC "Shadow"

We had no sun today to get a tradition "shadow" photo but Shyla looked almost like a shadow behind the snow and ice pellets being hurled through the air by 90 mph gusts of wind. Our area is known for its wind - but this wind storm was the worst I've been through yet. We didn't stay outside for long this morning. Between the flying ice pellets and the falling trees, it was downright dangerous.

Boulder received about 8" from a snowstorm and I took advantage of the snow and overcast skies to hike along the Greenbelt Plateau and found this minimalistic scene that I've been looking for a long time.

365: the 2015 Edition (175/365)

DDC "Late" - When we're late, we all move faster, like Shyla running through this meadow of wildlflowers.

Summer Morning, Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado

365: The 2015 Edition (29/365)

It's a big world in her eye.

DDC "Sign"

We adjoin National Forest, and people tend to find our little trail out the back of our land. They wander straight up to our house. We like our privacy but hate to have ugly signs. This sign was darn funny, I thought! But, it wasn't enough. People still thought it was okay to walk right up to our house. The camera made the difference - now, people turn around and leave us in peace.

I wanted to take this photo with R (our Black Lab) but he is not able to go out in fresh snow right now due to his elbow. He is waiting for his fancy elbow reconstruction which is currently scheduled for April 1 with the foremost expert in the world.

DDC "Pick Your Place" - Shyla was ecstatic to zoom around on the trails despite rain falling out of the sky! We always choose being out in nature, even when the weather is yucky.

Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado, at dusk with low-light conditions.

DDC "So much to say"

Shyla speaks with her body language. She froze at the top of this ridge, staring to the west. I knew right away that someone was down there. No words needed.

I found the perfect place to take photos of the Front Range. This summer, looking forward to going back with the tripod and when it isn't so freaking cold.

By the way, a friend of mine has been promoting the use of BW with tons of grain lately. His feeling is that it gives it more emotion and "texture" and I think he's kind of right. For the right photo that is.

Some of my favorite photos are the old mining camp and mountain town photos from Colorado's gold rush years. This photo feels kind of gritty to me, like that time period.

366: The 2016 Edition (90/366)

DDC "Sunday Afternoon"

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Most every time that I have ventured into the numerous glacial gorges of Rocky Mtn. National Park in winter, it has been an experience of high winds blowing snow, and snow devils, and the most difficult conditions for photography. The hikes are always great anyway though. On this morning, it was 0 degrees F, and it had snowed much of the previous night. I decided to go for it, and see if I could catch a moment of clearing at sunrise, with the possibility of alpenglow or whatever good lighting that mother nature might provide. Getting out of the car at 0 degrees F, and beginning my snowshoe trek in total darkness was the first obstacle. Climbing the altitude gain up the valley, I was plenty warm and arrived at Dream Lake in time for twilight. Twilight was nothing more than gray light though, and sunrise was only a slight yellowish glow--nothing spectacular. As the morning progressed, the blue winter hues and contrast on the surrounding landscape made it all worthwile. Thanks for looking, and have a great day!

It was a really cold morning, but it was worth it because of the fresh snow. Now I can't wait for some freshy fresh snow around Reno and Lake Tahoe to finally arrive.

A summer sunset illuminates fields full of thistle puff while the distant Mount Meeker, Longs Peak and Twin Sister Peaks fall into the shadows.

DDC "And Now for Something Completely Different"

Intense backlighting is what is different here. I liked how the two peaks to our east towered over Shyla in this photo.

365: The 2015 Edition (8/365)

The lighting on the Continental Divide at sunrise was warm and beautiful this morning.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is operating on a main line curve near the Rocky Mountain front range in an open area that has wind break hoppers along side to protect the trains from severe winds in Colorado, Summer 1980. There is a long string of hopper cars in this area that are full of ballast and dirt with vegetation growing on top of the ballast as you can see in the photo. The conductor said that many trains have derailed at this location due to the often present high speed winds. This back lighted photo was hard to present decently.

Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado. I watched this mother squirrel feeding on seeds while her baby (about 1/3 the size of the mother, not seen in this image) fed alongside her.

Schinia masoni which is also knows as the Gaillardia Flower Moth mimics the color of a common wildflower here. The moth lies, with its colors perfectly aligned with the colors of the wildflower.
