Mule Deer Buck with Antlers in Velvet, Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado, Summer, Dusk.

This buck passes through our back area pretty routinely. It appears to have been the dominant buck in our small local herd in recent years. Now it is sporting an impressive, actively-growing velvety rack yet again.

Two years ago, it dropped one of its antlers near our back door. A "gift!" It weighed 3.5 lbs (1.58 kg).

So, I imagine it will be carrying a pair of antlers that will weigh ~7.0 lbs (~3.18 kg). again. That will be just in time for rut beginning in September.

A westbound empty UCEX hopper train has just met an eastbound load at Clay, Colorado. The rear of the eastbound train is still passing the hopper car windbreak on Big 10 Curve, and is rumbling over the west switch at Rocky. Soon, the westbound will figure out why his air isn’t coming up as fast as it should, and will take down the west signal at Clay. Good old Rio Grande action on the N scale Moffat Road… my version of Big 10 anyway…

I'm guessing that the loaded oil train on the left has made it down from one of the shale fields in the north, which is where the opposing move is heading to.

This buck was standing still, pausing repeatedly to sniff the air. It was following seven other deer: at least two does and several fawns/yearlings. Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado

DDC "Dramatic"

It was a day of drab flat light but a glimmer of light at sunset gave me a photo opportunity that I liked!

DDC "Power" - Shyla still astounds me with her seemingly random powerful leaps into the air as she runs through the forest.

Those sparklies are tiny flying bugs :)

Last night's sunset may go down as the best of the year here in the Rockies. I'm still looking through all the photos I took!

I love it when a full moon goes down at the same time that the sun comes up. There weren't many clouds in the East, so the mountain isn't as pink as it often gets. Those that live along the "Front Range" of the Colorado Rockies know about the pink mountain sunrises.

Ridgeline, Front Range, Colorado

i have never seen a sky that was ENTIRELY orange until tonight.

sorry for the shake, but i was frantically trying to get this shot...it was just so unbelievable...should have used my tripod, but it changed too fast.

taken out of my upstairs window.

365: the 2014 Edition (354/365)

It was so overcast, with flat light, today that it was almost hopeless for an outdoor photographer. In Shyla's eye, you can see the eastern horizon, where a very thin streak of brightness was left over from sunrise.

Rocky Mountain Front Range, Denver, Colorado. The fires in Colorado increased from 12 to 14 in recent days; some with minimal containment. Once again, we are pleased to have received some rain just prior to this photo. But the air's "color filters" are altered due to the multiple fires' particulates in the atmosphere.

Hundreds of firefighters who specialize in fighting forest fires from the air (dropping fire retardant from customized aircraft) and on the ground (such as, the "Hot Shots") remain hard at work throughout the state. Hundreds more are due to arrive to work alongside these crews and offer relief for the weary in the days ahead.

It is reported that the 747 Global Super Tanker, a Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT), reconfigured and based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, may be called up to assist with these Colorado and California fires. First, the navigation system is being updated now for greater navigation accuracy.

DDC "Unexpected"

I always think that the face on this toy looks utterly surprised by something. So it fits the "unexpected" cue!

DDC "On Top"

Both pups were with me on top of Hug Hill one when a rainbow appeared on the western horizon. It was our lucky day!

We've been traveling a lot so I am terribly behind. This is my first small attempt to get re-started on posting my 365 photos for this year!

©Lela Bouse-McCracken ::: Getting to the top of Mount Evans (and back down) is not for the faint-hearted. But there is nothing quite like the majesty of sunrise at the summit. That is, if you can stand very strong winds and a wind chill that is below zero.

I appreciate the thought, but ***Please no group or personal icons in the comments.***

A bit of early morning light reflects onto Grizzly Peak from the clouds above.

The little bump on the left is Cupid and to the right of Grizzly is Lenawee Mountain and you can just see some runs of Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

A beautiful late winter morning in the Rockies!

DDC "Play with Light"

It was about 10°F at sunrise, and I caught a glimpse of Shyla's breath being lit up by the sun's rays. After a few tries, I managed to capture the cool sight!

What a way to start the week!

I know I am way behind at looking at my friends Flickr photostream - just dealing with life, sickness, this and that - promise to get back on track =)

Have a great week!
