The sun peeked over the plains to warm a December day unseasonably, but the warmth was appreciated. I was on Flagstaff Mountain and the prominent peak to the right is the upper edge of the First Flatiron. Boulder is directly below on the plains, tucked up against the mountains. The road heading due east is Baseline Road, which is North Latitude 40. The road at the bottom edge of the photo is Flagstaff Mountain Road.

After waiting on a few northbound trains to clear, UP 8358 and company charge up the final stretch to Palmer Lake.

The feed trough at the historic Malchow Farm has been part of a farmstead dating back to the early 1900's. Before the most recent generation of farmers, the property was also the site of the Overland Trail crossing of the Little Thompson River running just south of Berthoud, Colorado. Today, the historic feed trough only feeds visual perspectives to the distant Mount Meeker and Long's Peak, two of the highest peaks in Colorado's Front Range.

On August 23, 2013, Union Pacific was testing Electro-Motive Diesel’s SD70ACes on the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision west of Denver, Colorado. UP’s mobile laboratory car No. UPP 210 brackets EMD demonstrators Nos. 1206 and 1208 on high-adhesion tests with a westbound West Elk Mine coal empty leaving Rocky and is climbing toward Big 10 Curve.

Grade.

The leaves are just starting to get their fall colours and the Front Range is alive and vibrant!

The sunrises recently have been spectacular here along the Front Range of Colorado. On this day, the sun slipped behind some clouds at the end of the main event and presented this amazing skyscape. The misty clouds heavily reduced the brightness of the sun allowing this image to be taken without a filter.

Image notes: I stood in this spot busy with Canada Geese migrants hoping for a large group to fly in front of the sun. Instead what I got were multiple sorties of smaller groups flying in front of the sun. I couldn't resist the temptation in post to composite those groups into the larger flock you see here. ;-)))

A trio of Union Pacific EMD SD9043MACS power a westbound UP coal train through the snowy curves approaching the siding at Crescent, Colorado, on a very wet April 23, 1999. The former Rio Grande Moffat Tunnel route through the Tunnel District can receive a good snowfall when conditions are right.

My disappointment at the lack of a colorful sunset was compensated by the unusual clouds rolling over James Peak. The standing dead trees were killed in the Four Mile fire of 2010, which nearly swept through the lovely quaint town of Gold Hill just below the hill in the foreground.
