After fixing the flat on the Crested Butte, I took a short ride down to the Columbia Slough at NE 21st Ave right around sunset.
One more shot of 206 before they knock the signal down. One word of caution when planning to railfan here. Whenever outbound FEC Freights are forced to creep or stop for Iris, up to 5 Grade Crossings can easily be blocked depending on their length, creating severe traffic snarls in the process. Captured here is the trio of Union Pacific locomotives (UP1988, UP1996, & UP1983) as they pull a 2 mile long train toward their destination of Los Angeles on July 14, 2009. This chase consisted of driving from San Diego to north of Las Vegas, hanging out in 111 degree weather, pariently waiting for the train, then chasing and capturing the train all the way to the Harvey House in Barstow, California. From the Old Tampa Highway (County Road 542) Road Crossing outside of CSX’s Winston Yard in Lakeland, Florida. we find a Yard Job shoving a decent cut of cars off the north leg of the wye and onto the main track running adjacent to the Yard. In the foreground is the southbound signal that allows Trains using the south leg of the Winston Wye to either enter the north end of Winston Yard or bypass it on a stretch of track the Railroad calls the “BV Main”. Another shot of 514 going over Wacona. His smooth running from Waycross will soon be cut short on account of 433’s Air Conditioning not working right. A few miles ahead 514 will stop on the double-track between Minchew and Bolen where Locomotive Specialists from Waycross will come out to check the trouble.
