Simon Stevin (1548-1620) was a Flemish scientist who moved to the Northern Netherlands around 1577 and even became the adviser of Prince Maurits. He brought about evolutionary innovations in the fields of navigation, architecture, urban planning, surveying, hydraulic engineering and military science. He also played an important role in mechanics, mathematics and physics. Stevin was the first to systematically develop Archimedes' ideas on the balance of solids and liquids. He was also involved in hydrostatics, the doctrine that describes liquids in an equilibrium state. Stevin formulated the so-called 'hydrostatic paradox', which is sometimes - wrongly - attributed to Blaise Pascal. He was also the one who described a scientifically founded link between the tides and the position of the moon. In addition, he provided new insights into shipbuilding, drainage techniques and lock operation. In short, the importance of this scientist cannot be overestimated!

In this book - perhaps Simon Stevin's most influential work - he explains how to use decimal fractions for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and root extraction. His work illustrates applications to coins, area and volume measurements. His ideas will only find application after the French Revolution. When the American dollar was introduced in 1792, Thomas Jefferson wanted to divide the currency according to the decimal system, which he succeeded in doing. In his defence of the idea, he refers to "De thiende" by Simon Stevin. The Officina Plantiniana is printer and publisher for about 90% of the works of Simon Stevin, and thus ensures the international propagation of his ideas.

Hij zorgde voor evolutionaire vernieuwingen op het vlak van navigatie, architectuur, stedenbouw, landmeetkunde, waterbouwkunde en krijgswetenschappen. Hij speelde ook een belangrijke rol in de mechanica, wiskunde en fysica. Stevin was de eerste die de ideeën van Archimedes over het evenwicht van vaste lichamen en vloeistoffen op een stelselmatige manier heeft ontwikkeld. Verder hield hij zich bezig met hydrostatica, de leer die vloeistoffen in evenwichtstoestand beschrijft. Stevin formuleerde de zogenoemde ‘hydrostatische paradox’, die wel eens – onterecht – aan Blaise Pascal is toegeschreven. Continuing on the adventure in the Canadian Rockies, it cannot be understated the grandeur of nature there. Having been and living in the southern aspect of the mountain chain, it's more dramatic and majestic (and colder). I was pleased on the ability of the M5 and WATE along with the Ultra in Rodinal then Xtol to be able to capture alot of the tonality of the area, particularly since I used a yellow filter (for the most part) for some contrast. I was fortunate to be able to hike to many places where the density of people was less and the ability to capture was more; some absolutely stunning views. I need to come back to do some large(r) format stuff here - an amazing place. I thank those flickeranians who continue to inspire - it's you who help the rest of us look to observe, and not just see.
