The name derives from the fact that the fields around Partinico were bought by the Jesuit fathers in the 1500s. The name parrini, in fact, in Sicilian means priests.
So it was an area managed by the religious consisting of a small country church and a convent around which, later, the village arose with lodgings for the settlers and agricultural labourers.
In 1767, then, this village became the property of the French prince Henri d'Orleans who set up a farm for the production of a wine that soon became much appreciated and sought after. After the Second World War many of the inhabitants preferred to move to the city and the village remained almost uninhabited and therefore began its inevitable decline.
Today very few people live there who, however, in the last ten years have decided to give the village a new life. A local entrepreneur had the intuition to make it an unusual place and started a renovation of the houses in the style of the Catalan artist Gaudì.

The Tonnara di Scopello dates back to 1200 and is one of the oldest in Sicily. The activity continued until 1984 and every year, on average, about 500 tuna were caught.
The tonnara rises in a magical inlet, framed by steep cliffs and bathed by clear waters. The stacks emerge from the sea a few meters from the shore and make this small gulf even more fascinating.
The tonnara is located in Sicily, in the western part, in the locality of Scopello.
Scopello is a small fraction of the Municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani, which has about 400 inhabitants.

La Tonnara di Scopello risale al 1200 ed è una delle più antiche di Sicilia. L’attività è proseguita fino al 1984 e ogni anno, in media, venivano catturati circa 500 tonni.
La tonnara sorge in un’insenatura magica, incorniciata da ripide scogliere e bagnata da acque limpide. I faraglioni sbucano dal mare a pochi metri da riva e rendono ancora più affascinante questo piccolo golfo.
La tonnara si trova in Sicilia, nella parte occidentale, in località Scopello.

This is just a fraction of the number of King Penguins that were at this location. There are really no words to describe the feeling of being among thousands of penguins that show absolutely no fear of people. It was quite a humbling experience. Now I say that I should have taken more pictures but sometimes it was so overwhelming that you just had to look and take it all in. We were told that there were more than 250,000 penguins at some locations. This was the summer season in the Southern Ocean and they come here only to nest, then return north to warmer waters during the winter.
We were also told that the older penguins nest to the inside of the group and the first time nesters stay to the outside. This is because there is more risk of predators getting the chicks that are on the outside and the more experienced penguins know that. Taken at Gold Harbour, South Georgia on the cruise to Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula.

Leur couleur dépend du nombre de bulles d'air emprisonnées dans la glace. En effet, dès qu'un rayon de soleil entre dans une des bulles, une partie de la lumière est réfléchie. ... Une partie seulement de la lumière est alors réfléchie, en particulier les longueurs d'ondes bleues.
Parce qu’ils sont faits de glace pure, avec peu de bulles d’air ,la lumière blanche qui pénètre l’iceberg subit une absorption sélective selon les longueurs d’ondes qui la constituent. Les grandes longueurs d’ondes, comme le jaune et le rouge, sont absorbées en premier, les courtes comme le bleu subsistent plus longtemps. A 30 m de fond, dans la glace, seul le bleu n’est pas totalement absorbé. De plus, en rebondissant sur les molécules de glace, les ondes subissent un important phénomène de diffusion. Les fréquences du bleu semblent alors amplifiées. La fraction de lumière qui ressort, privée de ses radiations rouges, donne sa couleur bleue à l’iceberg. Les icebergs blancs, eux, sont formés par accumulation de neige. Leur glace contient beaucoup de bulles d’air. La lumière pénètre peu, car elle se réfléchit à leur surface. Après une infinité de réflexions, la lumière ressort sans avoir subi d’absorption. Conséquence : elle est toujours blanche.

Quaglietta (AV)
The history of Quaglietta begins when, to stop the Saracen incursions in the Sele Valley, it was decided to build 3 fortresses: Valva, Senerchia and Quaglietta, (which however at the time was called castrum Quallectae).
The first settlement was therefore a military fortress built on a rocky spur (284 m above sea level) to which a village was added over time.
The name has nothing to do with quails as many believe but with the ancient Latin name of the area or Acque electe which translates as pure water and refers to the richness and purity of the waters that flow in the area.
Although the town is closely linked to the municipalities of the Sele Valley belonging to the province of Salerno, it is part of the province of Avellino and is a fraction of the municipality of Calabritto.
The 1980 earthquake hit this town hard but it was renovated with great attention and today the ancient medieval village retains its ancient splendor and is a tourist attraction.
La storia di Quaglietta inizia quando per frenare le incursioni di saraceni nella Valle del Sele fu decisa la costruzione delle 3 fortezze: Valva, Senerchia e Quaglietta, (che però all'epoca si chiamava castrum Quallectae) .
Il primo insediamento fu quindi una fortezza militare costruita su uno sperone roccioso (284 m sul livello del mare) a cui nel tempo si aggiunse un borgo.
Il nome non ha nulla a che fare con le quaglie come in molti credono ma con l'antico nome latino della zona ovvero Acque electe la cui traduzione è acqua pura e fa riferimento alla ricchezza e purezza delle acque che sgorgano in zona.
Pur essendo il paese strettamente legato ai comuni della Valle del Sele appartenenti alla provincia di Salerno fa parte della provincia di Avellino ed è una frazione del comune di Calabritto.
Il terremoto del 1980 ha colpito duramente questo paese che però è stato ristrutturato con grande attenzione e oggi l'antico borgo medievale conserva l'antico splendore ed è una attrazione turistica.

It's rained so long that I only just got a cut in, before it's howled down again for the last few days.
For those of you who know that my apple trees are no more beware the following warning if you think about doing the same thing. Wildlife has pretty much abandoned my garden. No foxes, the occasional squirrel and a fraction of the birds. I refill seed, nuts & suet on the feeder once a week now & it used to be twice a day. Next year will see a good amount of planting.
If you think that's an odd place for chairs, they are there to stop a fence panel blow over in the wind.

This view shows a small fraction of the tundra swan activity on Sunday afternoon near Brownsville MN. The swan staging area extends for about 3 miles on the upper Mississippi River here and those distant flying swans are about 1 1/2 miles or 2400 meters away from where I was standing on the west shore. The Wisconsin shoreline would be an additional 800 meters to the east. If you care to zoom in on this rather fuzzy photo since there's some atmospheric distortion, you can see hundreds of ducks, some Canada geese and even a few American white pelicans joining in the mix.

Le contraste entre la pauvreté, les soldes affichés en vitrine, la banque dite "populaire", l'indifférence des passants, etc...
First time trying selective colour as part of this week's assignment for the course I'm doing. I know the focus isn't totally sharp but my model is extremely reluctant and incapable of staying still for even a fraction of a second!
