One of the major reasons why we need to work towards protecting the environment is because it helps to protect humanity. If we didn’t have our environment, then we wouldn’t have a place to live or resources to live.it is our moral obligation to do so. As a human who lives on earth, it is our responsibility to make sure that it is protected. We must give back to the future generation that what we have received and enjoying. Give them an environment that isn’t damaged and teach them how to continue living sustainably. I request all good souls to plant Banyan tree while making tree plantation. The train is now ready to leave and the shunter hands back the radio to the driver before opening the crossing gates. The station here opened in 1846 as the line east to Swaffham progressed. The station closed in 1968 along with the line to Swaffham, but this section has been retained from Kings Lynn for the forwarding of Glass making sand extracted here. Occasionally the platform has seen use by the Royak Family en-route to nearby Sandringham.

King Alfonso XII and the Correos (Mail) building Santander.

Alfonso XII (Alfonso Francisco de Asís Fernando Pío Juan María de la Concepción Gregorio Pelayo; 28 November 1857 – 25 November 1885) was King of Spain, reigning from 1874 to 1885. After a revolution deposed his mother Isabella II from the throne in 1868, Alfonso studied in Austria and France. His mother abdicated in his favour in 1870, and he returned to Spain as king in 1874 following a military coup against the First Republic. Alfonso died aged 27 in 1885, and was succeeded by his unborn son, who became Alfonso XIII on his birth the following year.

To date, he is the last monarch of Spain to have died whilst on the throne.

The Glasgow, Smyth Building (1843) in Prescott, Ontario, Canada.

This stone building was one of many inns on Water Street in the days of the forwarding trade. The property was built after Samuel Glasgow bought the land from Ebenezer Bacon, a prominent tanner, for 75 pounds, in 1843.

The next year Alexander Smyth, a merchant like Samuel Glasgow, bought the eastern half of the lot from Mr. Bacon. Together, the two men built the Water Street property and then built the stores on the north side of the lots fronting on King Street.

It was just after dawn when the radio crackled to life, "Jackson Tower to Q195, IC 1035 inbound passenger main, tower to swap." Being at the tower at that moment I looked to the south to see IC SD70 #1035 inching toward the tower with a long train in tow. He would pick up cars out of Ready track #6 and Forwarding Track #2 before departing up the Yazoo Subdivision for Memphis, Tennessee.

The Western Maryland's GC&E Subdivision was one of many that made people in sheer awe of the ingenuity that was on display throughout the railroads system.

But - much like the also largely famous Thomas Sub - the real show began deep within the national forests of West Virginia far from any nearby towns. The only way there? With your good ol 2 feet. Of those gems hidden so deeply into the vast wilderness was one of the WM's most iconic locations. Cheat Junction, where the crossing and meeting of the GC&E and Durbin Subs happened alongside the banks of the Cheat River's Shavers Fork tributary.

For many years, due to it's sharpest curves east of the Mississippi River at the High Falls (30°) and Switchback (29°) Curves, the GC&E Sub was a haven for pure 4 axle powered consists long into the introduction of big 2nd generation 6 axle power to the world. No 6 dare enter, accounting for they wouldn’t make it through the curves without derailing, a testament that still holds true to this day.

Throughout much of the Dubrin and GC&E Sub's existences, lumber and coal played primarily as the main domain of traffic, with lumber peaking in the 1910's, and coal slowly dwindled after peaking around roughly 1960. In 1923, the C&O entered into an agreement with the WM to interchange at Durbin and creating a through north-south route onto Elkins to the north and Roconverte to the south via Durbin.

As the 1960's rolled on, things went from bad to ugly, with the 1968 closure of the Belcher Mill in Durbin, sharply reducing traffic levels in that area. The domino effect had begun, and the 1970's welcomed in an even more grim future for the Greenbrier Division and Cheat Junction's role. The International Shoe Company would close next, in 1970. Between the 2 businesses, the Greenbrier Division had lost a third of the traffic it was once moving just 3 years prior.

This led to discussion within the C&O to discuss abandonment of the entire division and was agreed upon in 1971 by the C&O board of directors. Now into 1974, to save money, the C&O's service had been declined from tri weekly service for customers along the line to just once a week. This led to the closure of the pulp yard in Marlinton, and another lumber customer in Stillwell switching to truck hauls in 1975.

An excerpt from Abandonedonline.net explains what happened next, spelling the end for this fabled diamond in the middle of nowhere: "One of the concerns with outright abandonment was the remaining customers at Durbin and Bartow and the Cass Scenic Railroad. The C&O resolved this initially by ending its northern limit of abandonment to just south of the WM junction at Durbin and allow the WM to lease 2.8 miles of track to Bartow. The C&O also corresponded with Cass Scenic Railroad to allow the railroad to acquire the track between Durbin and Cass to allow shipment of coal and trains.

On March 18, 1975, the C&O requested permission from the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to abandon 92 miles of the Greenbrier Division from North Caldwell to the West Fork of the Greenbrier River at Durbin. It cited declining traffic and maintenance issues. Hearings were held in August 1977, where it was noted that the C&O had made little to no effort to promote or retain its services to the industries that remained, had deferred maintenance, spending only $34,000 in 1975 and 1976. Despite that, the ICC granted permission to abandon on August 16, 1978, and the C&O announced that the line would be put out of service on December 29."

By this time, the Iron & Coal Line, now known as the Durbin Sub became a dead ended piece of railroad at Durbin. The diamond and rail for the Durbin Sub at Cheat Junction were both removed sometime in 1982.

Meanwhile as for the GC&E Sub, it would see regular rail service to Webster Springs until well into the CSX era, before finally ending in 1992. The line was sold to the state of West Virginia a few years later in 1997. The Durbin & Greenbrier Railroad was formed to operate passenger excursions over the trackage bought from CSX, and what freight business was left around the Elkins area.

In the photo linked here, we are given a unique view of what this incredible place looked like in the year of 1979! Courtesy of Mr. Roy Ward.

Fast forwarding 28 years later, we have another photo showing this impressive junction by the way of Scott Lothes. Scott's photo, which inspired me to take the challenge on of hiking up this rugged hillside and shoot the junction for myself almost 10 years later to the date. As the photo shows, the vegetation on the rock outcropping was much less impeding than it is from my 2017 view.

Here we find the DGVR's "New Tygart Flyer" returning westbound from High Falls of Cheat, passing through this iconic location in West Virginia Railroading history.

For those wondering, it's a nearly 1000 foot straight uphill climb from the ROW below, to the rock outcropping the 3 of us each stood on over the last 38 years. I'm glad to say I can cross this shot off of my list of places to see, experience and visit. It was a absolute dog to hike up and down but the view at the top made it all worthwhile.

Update for those folks looking for answers/statements from me, but who are understandably disinclined to read all the comments below, and at the various linked images where I've chimed in....

1) Yes, this is the real photo. Yes, the Palin one is a Photoshop job. No, I didn't do the Photoshop - that turned out to be InnocuousFun who I had never met or heard of before all this. No, it's not a "real" gun.

A concise and accurate summary of the significant facts can be found at www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/is_that_a_real_photo_of_sa.... Where other sources contradict that account, or my statements here, trust the latter. FactCheck, as far as I've been able to discern, is as dry and nonpartisan as you can expect for the internet - certainly better than you'll get from my own forays into campaign bloggery!

To be avoided: Fox News's article on the episode, which manages to be a screed against a rival news organization's ostensibly poor fact-checking, while being itself wrong on points that could have easily been confirmed by either reading the FactCheck story or contacting me. I am flattered that they think Elizabeth was my girlfriend - then or ever - but, very sadly, this was not the case.

2) No, I cannot give you any more information about Elizabeth. No, I can't tell you her side of the story. I am uncomfortable issuing statements on her behalf or taking on the role of being her "manager" or anything similar; for her part, she is mainly concerned about her privacy. Both of us are riddled with mixed feelings about the Photoshop image, which makes issuing a definitive "statement" difficult; as well, it seems clear that the blogosphere/commentosphere will inevitably find its own meanings for anything we'd attempt to say. That's the way the world works - but the main point is that both of us kind of wish this whole thing would go away, not from our lives so much as from people's inboxes. More on this below.

3) Thanks for your interest, but I am really not inclined to participate in any online fora, guest blogs, podcasts, et cetera. Major news organizations should refer to the FactCheck story. If you want to put me on national television, get in touch, but only if you are willing to pay travel expenses to somewhere I'd want to visit anyway, plus charitable gifts. What I would really prefer is to be put on "Jeopardy!" and to have this be my cutesy anecdote that Alex asks me about after the first commercial break.

My reticence doesn't stem from any hostility to anybody who's written with such requests, but mainly from a sense that I personally don't have much more to say than I'm saying here, and that everyone's time would really be better spent covering actual news.

4) I am flattered by those who think I somehow have the power to wipe the Palin 'shop off the Internet, but this strikes me as unrealistic in the extreme. Strangers on my bus to work in the morning have seen the thing. Google turns up hundreds of thousands of hits for "'sarah palin' bikini." It's out of my hands - so whether you agree with my statements on this page or not, don't hold the 'shop image's existence, or distributed reach, over my head as something for which I should be responsible.

At the same time, I don't appreciate or accept my photo being used for profit, in whatever its altered state, without my permission or even my knowledge. If you see it for sale in any context, please let me know. This may also be a losing battle but frankly it is weird enough seeing my photo (and my friend's body) all over the Internet - I really don't want to see them on a T-Shirt.

The bottom line: I'm not a spokesperson for the left, for feminism, or for Barack Obama's campaign. I'm just some guy who took a photo four years ago and posted it on this blog two years ago, for the delight and entertainment of my friends. When the Palin 'shop first broke, I was amused because, I mean, I knew it was Elizabeth and it was just...bizarre. I also figured it was just one of countless 'shops being done at that time - I really could not have imagined, when it first appeared in my browser, that it would become as ubiquitous as it has.

I rather wish it hadn't. We deserve better from this election than deception and worn-out old narratives. It's deception to keep forwarding along a fake photo as a real one. It's a worn-out old narrative to imply that a female candidate (for any position, political or not) is unqualified because she has a body and sometimes puts a bathing suit on it (the "bimbo" frame-up).

Sarah Palin is in my view unqualified to be President, and being qualified to be President is really the only qualification to be Vice President. But she's not unqualified because she's a woman, or because of what's going on in her family, or because some Internet person put her face on the photo of some other Internet person. Her lack of qualification broadcasts itself right off of her resume, and is indeed the driving force behind her narrative as "hockey mom"; if she were qualified, she would lose the glow of the Everyperson.

Similarly, I think it's clear that Sarah Palin, to the extent that she has any documented policy convictions, stands for a vision of America with which I, along with millions of others disagree. Some aspects of that vision are what, no doubt, have lent this image an air of plausibility to many. Elizabeth was donning a particular stereotype of us Southerners when this photo was taken; it would have been read by our friends as hilariously out-of-character, but clearly to many people (on both ends of the Palin love/hate spectrum) they seem in-character for the Governor. But: we don't need the perverse patriotism of an American flag bathing suit (I still wonder how the Flag Code handles this) to point out how self-righteous patriotism of the "Liberals aren't really Americans!" variety poisons the well of our political discourse. And we don't need a BB gun to point out that the McCain/Palin ticket is a pro-gun ticket, calling gun control "a proven failure in fighting crime," opposing waiting periods for gun ownership, and seeking to end restrictions on assault weapons and armor-piercing ammunition.

No doubt this will all blow over soon and this text will look like the overpreening ramblings of a small man trying to elevate his teacup's tempest to the status of a major news story. I would offer this, though: I didn't choose to be thrust into the brief, fourth-tier spotlight. All I chose to do was leave the photo up and link it from a version of the other image. I caught the 'shop very early in its cycle and could have very easily taken this down; eagle-eyed viewers would still recognize the tell-tale signs of 'shopping, but many more people who now know the truth probably would still be fooled. I'm not asking for a standing ovation, but to those who have their own ideas about what I could or should have done, I do ask you to imagine yourselves in my shoes. I never quite anticipated that my life's most significant contribution in either photography or politics would be that I would not deny authorship of a candid snapshot. To quote Batman's spooky growly voice: "What would you have me do?"

When the furor blows over and bloggers can again focus on, you know, the economy, health care, education, foreign policy, and energy, this blog will continue with its normal course: pictures of architecture with academic rambling that only five people care about; and pictures of days spent with my family and friends...including any future picnics at the rock quarry. It was, after all, a really lovely afternoon.

Still working for Express Forwarding SRL, ready for some shunting before leaving to Rupea

It's getting late in the day as the shadows encroach PN Intermodal service 7PM5 from Kewdale to South Dynon as NR97/NR34/AN11 race across the fields towards Snowtown on Monday the 18th of May 2020. The AN was attached to this train at Spencer Jct for forwarding to Melbourne and was surprisingly online.

While best known for the gruesome murders discovered in the town during the late 1990's, Snowtown was previously a mainline junction on the Kadina to Brinkworth branch line. The section from Snowtown to Brinkworth was closed and removed in 1990, while the dual BG/SG gauge line to Kadina was closed to traffic in 1993. A small section remains in service as the siding for the Viterra Snowtown facility which sees grain traffic as required.
