Looking like Conrail in all ways except the number, GP38-2 5290, formerly CR 8090, leads Bellevue to Mansfield turn C37 past the often photographed Position Lights in North Robinson, OH on a pleasant spring morning. This train used to ferry auto parts to Mansfield for forwarding to an Ontario, OH plant. I believe the plant either closed or had its operations cut back, eliminating the need for this fun morning local to chase south from Bellevue.

I don't remember when someone, perhaps my mother, said I needed a job. Or the day when I realised I needed to earn some money to live. Work, I sort of fell into. You can't avoid it when you live on a farm.: all members of the family are workers to be called on when a hand is needed. So I started getting pocket money by working every day at harvest, when we were shearing, taking animals to market, sowing, etc, etc. until I realised taking money off my parents wasn't like a proper job. That came with a job fabricating ferro-cement fishing boats one summer, my first maritime connection. After Uni I trained as a Merchant Navy Deck Officer and Navigator when my dream of being an RAF jet fighter pilot came to nothing. Somehow, planes, ships, tractors and transport came together and after another spell on the farm I got a job in something called 'freight forwarding' importing and exporting round the world. In that field I had six employers over the next 40 years, the most significant change being when I decided there were better prospects in 'sales' than operations. Mindful that with no sales there is no business, that was the more dynamic field to be in. It was always more pressurised, and more results driven, but the rewards were greater, and it changed me as a person. I went from being shy to being quite confident meeting and trying to win over complete strangers. Of course that was the hardest part but I never needed to win over the world to be successful in our own little pond.
Today, over a beer, I shall tell 'the team' what it has been like to work with them for so long, and see a new generation come into the company. They won't be able to see so far ahead, just as I couldn't when i was a new starter, but today will be my very last day of work.......forever. I had considered a 'confessional' of all the bad things I've done while employed, but running through the memories in my mind, I decided they would be too painful to admit to, and would destroy my legacy.
I know I'm lucky. My father-in-law died before he got to retire. And I will be a fool if I don't make the most of the new opportunity I have. But I'm a bit wary of the word 'retire'. It sounds like a slippery slope, but I don't want to get on it yet. Too much to do.
I've always hated trying to get tidied up at work to go on holiday, without leaving stuff undone. But my last couple of days have been so busy, I'm sure I will be going for a beer with the others before EVERYTHING is done.
But where is the low hanging fruit?

Geführt wurde er von der zum Aufnahmezeitpunkt noch relativ neuen Werbelok für die Spedition Roland, der 193 753 von ELL. Eingesetzt wird dieser Vectron von der Wiener Lokalbahn Cargo. Beim Überqueren der Mariaorter Eisenbahnbrücke bei Regensburg konnte ich die Leistung aufnehmen.
Mainly loaded with tank containers, DGS 41158 from Budapest Soroksar Terminal to Rheinhausen was to be seen on 19 June 2022. It was hauled by the relatively new advertising locomotive for the Roland freight forwarding company, the 193 753 from ELL. This Vectron is used by Wiener Lokalbahn Cargo. I was able to photograph the train crossing the Mariaort railway bridge near Regensburg.

On a clear mid July morning, the D.345.1071 of Mercitalia Rail performs the MRS 53303 coming from Venice Marghera Scalo and bound for Adria (RO) with subsequent forwarding to Cavanella Po on behalf of the Geotec SRL Company.
The railway station Pelkum was a personal railway station in the Hamm-Osterfelder Bahn from Hamm to Oberhausen. He was put into operation on the 1st of May, 1905 and closed down at night by 21. on 22nd of May, 1966.
The railway journey in the 4th class of Pelkum to Hamm was then favourable as the same journey by the streetcar. Indeed, the speech cannot be from comfort, most places were standing places, there were only few benches in the carriage of the 4th class. After the First World War the 4th class was abolished.
The railway station existed not only of the receipt building with inn, waiting room and ticket sales, but owned a checking. in the luggage - also for express goods - and other offices, thus also the office of the stationmaster who had, for the rest, also on site a flat. In addition there was a freight shed in which above all goods from and for the colliery de Wendel were turned. Other important user of the freight shed was the forwarding agency Hegemann.
With a pair of SD45s churning their collective 40 cylinders, a Wisconsin Central “all-rail” taconite ore load slowly climbs to the top of Byron Hill at Byron, Wisconsin, on March 23, 1996. WC No. 6498 is the former BN/WC No. 6677 and Frisco No. 929 built in September 1969, and showing just a hint of SLSF Mandarin orange on the roofline. This unit carries one of WC’s early attempts at the maroon and gold scheme, complete with V-stripes, before they settled on their standard scheme. With the Great Lakes frozen, the “all-rail” taconite is from the Iron Range in Minnesota and Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range, with middle man WC handing it off to the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern for forwarding to the steel mills.
The onset of autumn is evident in the tinges of gold dotting the deciduous leaves and the fruits of harvest being rushed to market on Great Lakes Central's St. Charles Branch, its former NYC jointed sticks creaking and clacking beneath the Alco trucks of an Annie GP35 five decades and 6 years into a career bound within the borders of the Wolverine State. Several dozen 263k hoppers laden with product dispensed from the elevators of The Andersons in Oakley are rolling swiftly near the limit of the branch's class II track speed towards Owosso, where they will rejoin GLC's main trunk for further forwarding to the consignee.
CN's GTW Heritage unit is on the point of CSX K614-25 as it rolls through Defiance, Ohio pounding the CSX diamonds with the Napoleon, Defiance & Western. The ethanol loads originated on CN and were interchanged to CSX in Chicago for forwarding to Philadelphia, PA. 7/25/2021

The largest of its kind anywhere in the World, this cheese market turns a square in central Alkmaar into a hive of activity, as the cheese carriers dart about, slaloming between thousands of Gouda cheese wheels lined up on the ground.traditional merchant cheese markets as operated in the post-medieval period, re-enacted during the summer months for tourists. The shows are today surrounded by stalls selling all things traditional to the Dutch culture, including cheese.

Dutch cheese farmers traditionally brought their cheeses to the market square in town to sell. Teams (vemen) of official guild cheese-porters (kaasdragers), identified by differently coloured straw hats associated with their forwarding company, carried the farmers' cheese on barrows, which typically weighed about 160 kilograms. Buyers then sampled the cheeses and negotiated a price using a ritual system called handjeklap in which buyers and sellers clap each other's hands and shout prices. Once a price is agreed, the porters carry the cheese to the weighing house (Waag), and scale of their company.

A pair of Indiana Railroad SD90MACs slowly load the “XL Train” at Peabody Energy’s Bear Run Mine in Sullivan County, IN. Opened in 2010, it is the largest surface mine in the eastern United States. Once loaded the train will head to Terre Haute for interchange to CSX and forwarding to the Fayette, IN generating station.
Not 100% happy with the composition here (it might not be on here for long), but the scene confronting me was without question a very special one. There are one or two alternative arrangements involving BNB & that phenomenal cloud that probably deserve the nod ahead of this one; as usual I'll later regret impatiently forwarding it without proper consideration.

Dieser Zug ist einheitlich mit Aufliegern und Wechselbrücken der Spedition Winner beladen. Etliche Jahre oblag die Beförderung dieser Leistung dem EVU Lokomotion. Im Herbst 2020 gewannen jedoch die ÖBB den Auftrag und übernahmen die Verbindung. Bespannt war der komplett beladene KLV-Zug mit der 1016.033, die zum Aufnahmezeitpunkt schon fast ihrer Wortmarke an der Front verlustig gegangen war.
In the woods between Grafing and Assling I could photograph the intermodal train DGS 42175 from Wuppertal to Sommacampagna on 18th of June 2021. This train is uniformly loaded with trailers and swap bodies of the forwarding company Winner. For several years, the transport of this service was the responsibility of the Lokomotion. In the fall of 2020, however, ÖBB won the contract and took over the connection. Mostly Tauri locomotives, such as the 1016.033 shown here, are used to and from the Brenner Pass.
LNG-Terminal
Der jüngste Bereich der Hafenanlagen, das LNG- Terminal zur Aufnahme und Weiterleitung von Flüssiggas, wurde 2015 in Betrieb genommen. Die Investition umfasste neben dem eigentlichen LNG-Terminal auf der Insel Wolin auch den Bau eines Wellenbrechers, weiterer Hafeninfrastruktur für den Betrieb von LNG-Schiffen und einer Gasleitung Stettin-Swinemünde.
Auch hier an der Mole sieht man sehr viele Kormorane.
Damit endet die Serie der Hafenimpressionen.
LNG Terminal
The newest area of the port facilities, the LNG terminal for receiving and forwarding liquid gas, was put into operation in 2015. In addition to the actual LNG terminal on the island of Wolin, the investment also included the construction of a breakwater, additional port infrastructure for the operation of LNG ships and a gas pipeline from Szczecin to Świnoujście.

Eine der wenigen im gelb-silbernen Ursprungsdesign von Dispolok verbliebenen Loks der Baureihe ES 64 F4 ist die 189 205. Bisher hat auch der neue Eigentümer Beacon Rail Leasing an der Lackierung bis auf das Logo mit den drei gelben Kreisen nichts verändert. Am 21. Juni 2021 konnte ich besagte 189 205 vor dem DGS 41421 von Ludwigshafen BASF Ubf nach Olsztyn Glowny fotografieren. Dieser KLV-Zug ist stets einheitlich mit Aufliegern der Spedition Miratrans beladen. Die Aufnahme entstand bei Odensachsen im osthessischen Haunetal.
One of the few ES 64 F4 locomotives remaining in Dispolok's original yellow and silver design is the 189 205. So far, the new owner, Beacon Rail Leasing, has not changed the paintwork except for the logo with the three yellow circles. On 21 June 2021, I was able to photograph the aforementioned 189 205 in front of the DGS 41421 from Ludwigshafen BASF Ubf to Olsztyn Glowny. This intermodal train is always uniformly loaded with semi-trailers from the Miratrans freight forwarding company. The photo was taken near Odensachsen in eastern Hesse.
After forwarding the trio of SD40 products to Boscobel the night prior, I confirmed an inkling that L724 would clean up the island and run east the following morning on one of WSOR's more elusive sections of railroad. Seen at Bridgeport, WAMX 4191, 4223, and 4180 amble east with 42 cars from PDC, cleaning up traffic from the west end headed for Madison.
ACWR train 100 arrives into NS's Charlotte Yard on a gorgeous Carolina afternoon. Three home road SD40-3s lead four SD40-2s and two MP15Es bound for forwarding to consignee Savage Rail. One of the four is painted in a very classy scheme to honor our country's veterans.

This mural is 85ft tall and depicts the story of St. Thomas while celebrating the optimism of the future. It is painted on one of the trestles and features many elements to showcase the present to past connection to our railway history.
The design is a reimagining of the dynamics between Audrey Hepburn & Gary Cooper in the classic film, ‘Love in the Afternoon’, and a meditation on the need to transcend nostalgia & move forward. Nostalgia is composed of two Greek words — ‘nostos’, which means ‘to return home’, and ‘algos’, which means ‘pain’. Denial has titled the mural ‘Newstalgia’, forwarding the idea of embracing the future & moving away from that specific type of pain that only comes from trying to live in the past.

I was shooting just one squirrel and another one popped up above his head. I had fun shooting them for a few months until an ice storm damaged their abode. Unfortunately when they moved they didn't leave me a forwarding address. :(
Der DGS 44935 von Lübeck Skandinavienkai nach Wels Vbf ist eine merkwürdige Leistung. Erbracht von der österreichischen Rail Cargo Group, werden damit meist nur wenige Container der Spedition Bruhn befördert. Am 19. Juni 2025 wurde die Gelegenheit genutzt und dem kurzen KLV-Zug wurden noch drei mit Schnittholz beladene Rungenwagen beigegeben. Die Zuglok war die 1016.031. Bei Bernhards in Osthessen war es kein Problem, den Zug in seiner kompletten Länge zu dokumentieren.
The DGS 44935 from Lübeck Skandinavienkai to Wels Vbf is a strange train. Operated by the Austrian Rail Cargo Group, it usually only carries a few containers for the Bruhn freight forwarding company. On 19 June 2025, the opportunity was seized and three stake cars loaded with sawn timber were added to the short intermodal train. The locomotive was 1016.031. At Bernhards in East Hesse, it was no problem to document the train in its entirety.
Earlier this week, NICTD announced it's intent to close 11th St. station at the beginning of next month. This will be the end of passengers boarding trains in the street, as the railroad plans to keep the station closed until their "Double Track NWI" project is completed, projected in 2 1/2 to 3 years.
Symbolically though, this announcement really does mark the beginning of the end of the South Shore's coveted streetrunning throughout Michigan City. While nothing but the station's closure is imminent just yet, it shows that times are changing much faster than you think. A quick drive up and down 10th and 11th will reveal many of the properties along the streets boarded up, with NICTD signs warning against trespassing on their newly acquired property.
What does all this mean? I had to get out yesterday night and get some action in the street. As I always prefer to do these days, I chose to go out at night for the different perspective you can get on things. My favorite shot of the night was this one of (what should still be) AF7, the nightly crew that moves east traffic west for eventual forwarding and interchange, running all the way to the railroad's leased City Track at Goff.

Two high cab 'pit motor' GP39-2s (792 & 799) built in 1978 for use on ore trains in Kennecott's Bingham Canyon open pit mine still served on the rails of their original owner back on this date. At the time they were lettered for Tangent Rail Services which provided contract switching on the remains of Kennecott's rail infrastructure, which mainly consisted of hauling acid trains to and from the UP and switching boxcars of finished copper from the mills out for export. Here the two sisters can be seen pulling a long cut of white empty KCCX acid tank cars up the grade toward the smelter complex in this view looking east off the 2100 South Hwy overpass as they climb the grade up from the interchange at Union Pacific's Garfield Yard.
The Kennecott smelter at Magna produces about 1 million tons of sulfuric acid per year from sulfur dioxide captured as a byproduct of the copper smelting process. These white tanks historically moved as 80 car unit trains up the Ogden Sub to Pocatello for forwarding to the Agrium fertilizer plant near the potash mines around Soda Springs. I

With covered hoppers for forwarding to Putnam and autoracks for the assembly plant in Ingersoll OSR FP9A 1400 is rolling through Beachville on a fine early summer evening.
The ghost of RailAmerica can be seen on the nose of #1400 which still wears the blue, while and yellow paint applied by Railink.
SETG's Vectron nr. 193 736 runs on the late afternoon of 2025.02.10. shortly after Biatorbágy station (HU), with the container train nr. 44398 from Curtici to Genk. In Hungary, the train is operated by S-Rail HU Kft., which company started the train forwarding in Hungary, at the beginning of January 2025.
A pair of EMD SD60s owned by Oakway Leasing was easing a loaded Burlington Northern coal train down to the Mississippi River for forwarding towards Galesburg in 1995.
This area was a neat little warehouse district and was always a cool place to nab the near-constant flow of Powder River coal as it made its way to market.
OWY 9019 has since moved on and is now better known as Canadian National 5459, wearing a much more subdued paint scheme.

The 11AM Anchorage yard job with MP15DC 1553 seen pulling a small cut off 189 flats the US Army Fort Richardson loop area for this first time in over a decade. This test load of Strykers and other equipment will be pulled back to the ARR's main yard for forwarding north back to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks regular freight service.

While longshoremen tend to Federal Katsura behind, two of Burns Harbor Railroad's GP38-2s are ready to move a transformer weighing in at over 400,000 lbs. Bound for a wind turbine farm near Wolcott, IN, BHR moved the load about two miles to NS for forwarding to Logansport, IN, and handoff to destination carrier TP&W.

Given the prohibition of forwarding trains carrying dangerous materials in the railway tunnel of Turin, to cross the hub of the Piedmont capital and avoid the underground passage freight trains are often forced to follow alternative routes, as in the case of this Gallarate - Modane intermodal routed via Sesto Calende - Novara - Alessandria, photographed in the arid countryside just outside the city of Novara, thirsty from the persistent drought of this last winter in the Po Valley.
Freight forwarding specialist Geodis is entering the dedicated air cargo market by adding an A330-300P2F. The aircraft involved is EI-GTT (713) which will be operated for the cargo company by Titan Airways and will become G-EODS.
The motive power shuffle is in full swing - two Trona Railway crews, one on the ex-SP set in the foreground that will tie onto the rear of the coal train, and the other to lead it back to Trona. Meanwhile, the UP set on the left will retrieve the unit hopper train on the interchange track (background) and head back to Mojave for forwarding.
In complete unexpected fashion, two Northern Plains trains meet at the north end of the Thief River Falls yard. Coming inbound is an oil train that was, presumably, stored somewhere along NPR trackage along with some local work from Oslo. The outbound train is the regular job with empty grain hoppers for elevators in North Dakota bound for Fordville tonight with forwarding on tomorrow.
Hart vom Einsatz gezeichnet präsentierte sich die für die GySEV im Einsatz stehende 193 235 der ELL am 12. April 2025. Sie beförderte den KLV-Zug DGS 43948 von Wien Freudenau Hafen nach Wanne-Eickel. Früher stets einheitlich mit Aufliegern der Spedition LKW Walter beladen, finden sich nun auch Wechselbrücken der Spedition Dachser im Zugverband. Aufgrund von verminderter Streckenkapazität auf der angestammten Route durch die Oberpfalz wurde der Zug an diesem Tage über das Altmühltal umgeleitet und konnte von mir beim Verlassen des Esslinger Eisenbahntunnels fotografiert werden.
On 12 April 2025, ELL's 193 235, which is in service for GySEV, showed signs of wear and tear from heavy use. It transported the intermodal freight train DGS 43948 from Vienna Freudenau Hafen to Wanne-Eickel. Previously always uniformly loaded with trailers from the LKW Walter freight forwarding company, the train now also includes swap bodies from the Dachser transport company. Due to reduced route capacity on the traditional route through the Upper Palatinate, the train was diverted via the Altmühltal valley on this day and I was able to photograph it as it left the Esslingen railway tunnel.

The company delivers over 1.5 billion parcels per year. The company was founded in the United States in 1969 and expanded its service throughout the world by the late 1970s. The Boeing 777, commonly referred to as the Triple Seven, is an American wide-body airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's largest twinjet. After coming into Toledo on NS as 60P this unit potash train was handed off to the Ann Arbor at Alexis for the trip north to Osmer. Inzwischen finden sich aber auch Schiebewagen im Zugverband. Am 21. September 2020 brachten die 1144.243 und 229 den Güterzug über den Semmering und konnten beim Überqueren des Krauselklausel-Viadukts abgelichtet werden.

This connection is used to transport car parts between FIAT plants in Poland and Italy. Primarily, this is done in swap bodies operated by the eponymous Stante forwarding company. In the meantime, however, wagons type H have also joined the train. On September 21, 2020, ÖBB's 1144.243 and 229 hauled the freight train over the Semmering and could be photographed crossing the Krauselklausel viaduct.
At twilight, the Trail Turn opens up the throttle out on the Detroit Lakes Subdivision mainline making a straight shot to Thief River Falls. Only thing left to do is yard the train and tie down the power. The Trail Turn (H88) departed Thief River Falls around 1300 and is now returning around 2030. It takes a good eight hours to complete the work running to Trail and back switching out empties for loads at the Strata Corporation. The two ECO motors have a haul of 41 loads for interchange or forwarding on to one of the Strata operations in North Dakota.
