BNSF 8001 pulls an empty 'X' train of empty grain hoppers east through the Yakima River Canyon. Out of frame to the left is the Umtanum Ridge, the hill with the highest elevation in the Canyon, with summit of 3,480ft. Behind my position is a campground popular with hikers and at this time of year fisherman, who flock to the area for rainbow trout fishing.
This train is returning from the Port of Grays Harbour in Hoquiam, WA. The BNSF hands the loaded trains off to PSAP at Centralia, WA, where a PSAP crew handles the train for the 71 miles to the port for unloading. It is not unusual to see multiple 'PSA' trains per day during harvest season.
The loaded trains travel west down the Lakeside, and Fallbridge Subdivisions to Vancouver WA, before heading north on the Seattle Subdivision to Centralia. Often, the empty trains will be sent east via Stampede Pass and the Yakima Valley Subdivision to Pasco, where they rejoin the Lakeside Sub for forwarding back to the prairies to reload. In these instances, as with the train above, the train would have taken an almost entirely ex-Northern Pacific routing, with the exception of the former Spokane Portland and Seattle Fallbridge Sub.
It was a pleasantly warm Saturday Feb. 23, 1985 on the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac at Milford, VA. With an early quit in mind, the Acca Local has already turned and the next stop is Acca Yard in Richmond. GP40 No. 127 will make quick work of that 36 miles.. A note about those cars on the right. At the time, RF&P was using the yard at Milford to store cars that are waiting to be scrapped. When the price was right, they would be moved to Richmond for forwarding via SBD to Peck Iron and Metal in South Richmond. Many of the boxcars stopped at Bryan Park Terminal in Richmond to have the roller bearing trucks switched out with friction bearing trucks from RF&P MofW and sand service cars. RF&P's old equipment got roller bearing trucks and the friction bearing ones went to the scrapper.
Fast forwarding a bit to a scene from a future series from my recent trip to St. Simons Island, Georgia. Here, I came across a tall man made of silver. He is known in the Flickrland as the littletinperson (not "little in person" as once believed). The clouds were perilous and the sun was threatening to drown. As soon as he pulled out his mysterios black box of Nikon, the sun split through the clouds and shined tall and wide. As tall and wide as the breadth of his experiences. He is the tallest man up in front of the scene (with the help of a bit of perspective exageration). I decided to go free of tripod along with him on this shot. It was a wonderful vacation and great meetup. His stories can be found at:
So swing over and give him a visit. Listen to the stories and learn.
CN Geometry train rolling Westbound between Jesup and Raymond, Iowa on the old IC line across Iowa, now owned by the Canadian National. Shot back in April, I frankly forgot I had not posted it. The landscape out here is fast forwarding to look like this again with all the crops being harvested, and the leaves fast falling off the trees here in Iowa
Evolution. Somethings have got worse and some things better. This is definitely better. I can remember having about having 8 tracks on each side of my tape. Fast forwarding trying to find the track I want. Now, any album, Any artist, any song. Having said that it did force you to listen to the whole album and pick up on the more obscure tracks. Hmmmmm, maybe it wasn’t that bad after all 😊
An Alaska Railroad crew is pulling and spotting the Surbuban Propane spur in Whittier yard with a pair of SD70MACs before doubling up a big 120N freight of mixed manifest and intermodal traffic off the AML barge up from Seattle that they will take north to Anchorage a little later.
Of note is the unique grey and red HWCX car in the foreground. These specialized cars were owned by Halliburtun Services and were fixtures on the interline barge service for decades transporting drilling mud components to the Fairbanks areas for blending and forwarding by truck up the haul road to the North Slope oil fields.
The AAR code for this type of car is LM, which is defined as “A car equipped with one or more permanently enclosed tanks or containers, provided with one or more openings for loading and equipped for pneumatic or gravity unloading. Car is suitable for handling certain dry powder or granular commodities, and also low viscosity, non-dangerous liquid commodities.” Some of the earlier 75 ton cars have already reached their 50 year revenue service limit while others age out in 2024 so if you want to shoot these unique freight cars you need to hunt them down soon!

A 204-es Bardotka halad a naplemente fényében, Taszármalonya közelében.
No. 751.204-9 "Bardotka" is travelling in the sunset near Tesárske Mlyňany. It is forwarding the No. 83710 freight train, which is running between Zlaté Moravce and Nové Zámky. Wagons loaded with wood and scrap iron are typical on ŽSR's railway line 151, so these two main loads were travelling on this train as well.
E&LS leased two almost new Conrail GP38-2s for a lengthy time in the early 1980s. Both are seen here with the 8260 and E&LS RS12 213 leading a Channing to Green Bay freight while 8273 and E&LS RS12 300 wait to follow on the Groveland Mine spur. The train of pellets out of the Groveland Mine will be interchanged to the C&NW at their Antoine yard in Iron Mountain for forwarding to Escanaba and will be one of the last as the mine had closed over 2 years earlier and the last of the stockpiled pellets was finally being hauled out.
I ride the bus every day, alone. There are no other riders.

A ČD Cargo 230.019-2-es pályaszámú Laminátkája kezdi meg a "hegymászást" Iváncsa felé egy Dunaújvárosba tartó szénvonattal. A 2139 tonnás tehervonat továbbításában szerepet vállalt a vonat végén tológépként funkcionáló 742.075-5-ös Kocúr is. A kép hátterében Ercsi városa, a jobb szélén a település Nagyboldogasszony-temploma látható, balra pedig a MOL Dunai Finomító kéményei magasodnak.
ČD Cargo's "Laminat" with track number 230.019-2 starts its "climbing" towards Iváncsa with a coal train bound for Dunaújváros. "Kocur" 742.075-5, which functions as a pusher at the end of the train, also played a role in forwarding the 2139-tonne freight train. In the background is the town of Ercsi, with the Nagyboldogasszony-templom (Church of Our Lady) on the right and the chimneys of the MOL Dunai Finomító (MOL's refinery) on the left.
118 highballs the east switch at Levack blasting past H57 which is just about ready to head down the Levack spur with its 46 empty ore jimmies in tow. The train will spend 2-3 hours loading at Vale's Coleman mine for forwarding to the Clarabelle Mill in Sudbury. A sharp pair of former Soo SD60s are in charge today, amazingly wearing the same colour scheme as the ratty GEs flying by on 118.
After chasing a New Hampshire Northcoast shuttle down to Rochester last week and only getting a couple sunny shots, I decided to give it another go this Thursday. The leased FURX unit was spending an infrequent stint in the shop at Ossipee promising an all green consist. Trailing the three NHN units were 18 loads of sand for Tri City, 3 empty steel cars and the company caboose/business car. The empty steel cars would be left at Tri City for forwarding to Dover on Friday. After unloading the sand, they would use the caboose as a riding car as the train shoved north to Hayes where the power would run around the train before heading back to Ossipee. The morning train gave the rare chance to get sun on the east side of the tracks at Union Meadows.

One for Switcher Sunday: What I believe is properly noted with the reporting marks PGVX 2012, an SW8, lets out a little bit carbon as it shoves on a set of 4 loaded hoppers at the site of the former Dubuque Junction.
I got lucky on this particular Friday afternoon and happened to be in the area of the Viterra operation here when I noticed activity with someone on the railcars. My best guess given what I saw and the very rusty condition of these former SOO Line Hoppers is that what the crew was transferring out of the barges in the upper center with a crane and loading these four hoppers was salt. With that job apparently complete, they were pulled slowly through the loading house (I assume it has a scale) and then eventually up to this spot to clear a switch. With a belch the crew is now shoving back where they'll deposit these 4 loads on one of the spurs just above the engine, for the CN yard/local crew to pick up soon. Since they are SOO cars, I wonder if they went to the CPKC interchange for forwarding to a customer on their railroad? The two road still swap cars via a spur off the main near the CN yard.
This is a scene loaded with so much neat history the more you look, and there's lots of layers. If you're curious here is a (admittedly somewhat long winded) description of some of it...
The most obvious is the diamond at front at center: This is the site of the former Dubuque Junction, once linking together the Chicago Great Western and the Illinois Central. The IC still is in operation with the mainline at right, and the track in the lower center is what is used to connect to this facility. The other former CGW main was originally abandoned west of Dubuque in the 1980s. A segment of the line here was still used until somewhere in the early 2010s though to service another nearby Cargill Complex - around 2012 I still saw the occasional set of cars being moved by a different SW1 assigned there. But it has since been severed and the track the 2012 is on is just a stub that ends a few more car lengths behind the camera. There was once a tower here at Dubuque Junction directly under the camera: see this neat Lance Wales photo showing off the spot in Chicago Central days looking in the opposite direction from my view: www.flickr.com/photos/wales23/11921296805/
The name Dubuque Junction is still used today for what is now the connection between the CN and CPKC a short distance to the west.
The second more obvious neat bit of history is the stone tower at upper right - that's the Shot Tower. Built in 1856, it is a holdout of the history of this tri-state area of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois in the lead mining industry that was really important around here for many years. Lead mining allowed for the production of lead shot for weapons in these towers, where the molten lead could be poured and the round shot formed as the material fell and cooled.
The industry here has been there far shorter than the tower, but it has changed over time too. The PGVX reporting marks of the 2012 would reflect Peavy Grain, a previous owner that then became Gavillon Grain before that company was bought in 2023 by current owner Viterra. The little complex here once had more buildings but some of them were torn down in the last few years, supposedly with the intent of creating a new facility although the Viterra purchase may have put a pause on some of those plans. There's still a number of tracks and loadouts for transferring bult products to and from trucks and barges, and the SW8 is stored inside the load out shed under the bins but can occasionally be found out and about.
This little blue switch engine also has a neat history: the best records I can find is that it was built in 1951 for the US Army, with the same number. That fits with a story told to me by the operations manager, that he once a number of years back had a group of Veterans stop in and want to see the engine. If I remember right, they had operated it during their time in the army as support for the Korean War! For now at least this 73 year old engine is still earning it's keep in what would seem to be a low-stress retirement job, moving the occasional cut of cars here on the banks of the mighty Mississippi.
(By the way, If anybody else has older photos of this junction in it's heyday beyond the handful on railpictures.net, I'd love to see 'em!)
This is only the Bulk terminal-Tuebrook leg, 66717 was the banker and became the train engine for the forwarding to Drax power station.

Moderate risk for this section of Nebraska. As we packed our gear and left about 3:00am to intercept these forwarding storm cells. Yes I said 3:00 am.
6:30am ish....Once in position to intercept... They were moving extremely fast and once they moved over our location it was hard to keep in front of them. We tried. Though we eventually have to move south Close to Shelby Nebraska we got the last severe storm of the day!

Having arrived to the east end of the Bluefield, WV yards, NS 393, lead by Wabash heritage unit #1070, creeps its way along the southside main on March 7, 2021. In June 1952, the N&W began construction on this section of the Bluefield yard to help speed the flow of traffic east due to growing export coal business at that time. This project would call for the excavation of 337,000 cubic yards of material and the extension of the eastward forwarding and receiving yards would amount to 2.77 miles in total.

This post was forwarded to me and I'm forwarding it to anyone who cares about what happens at Little Mountain...Please support us!!!
The ball has finally dropped on the ancient trees at the base of Little Mountain in Errington, just outside of Parksville, BC.
For everyone who wants to save the habitat of these beautiful little owls and of course the Old Growth in our region, please come and support us!! Please help the pygmy owls survive in our area...Keep the Old Growth Trees below little mountain. Meeting Friday and 3:00 see details below.
For the past 4 years treaty negotiations prevented locals from getting a clear answer from BC Provincial Government until
TODAY!!!
The Ancient Forest at the Base of Little Mountain (below the cliff where people enjoy the view) is a rare grove of Old-Growth Douglas fir trees (between 300 to 700 years old) that has survived fire, logging, and tons of garbage being dumped from above. It has historical cultural and archaeological significance and is frequented by many locals for a wide variety of activities.
These ancient trees, which few people know survived 150 years of logging, are about to be logged UNLESS the public stands up for this JEWEL. This beautiful grove consists of approximately 100 old-growth Douglas fir growing through-out the giant boulders. Making this 'grove' a significant portion of the less than 0.05% of old-growth Coastal Douglas fir left standing in British Columbia. Several rare and endangered plant communities thrive in this area.
WITH NO PUBLIC NOTIFICATION these trees are now slated to be logged!!!
The back-ground story is difficult to understand but the reality will face locals very soon.
A public walk through the area will start:

CN 8016 leads another of it's SD70M-2 kin down the 1.9% grade of Steelton Hill, between Nopeming Junction, and Steelton, MN, on CN's Superior Subdivision. This line was part of a large doubletrack and line revision project in 2015.
A recent work trip to the mid western United States gave me an opportunity to visit an area that I had never been, but have been keeping an eye on from afar for several years.
The Iron Range of Minnesota is home to some fascinating rail and shipping operations, featuring a the rail to ship 'conveyor belt' of taconite iron pellets being transported from the mines in the region to several ports on the north shore of Lake Superior, for forwarding to steel mills further east. Ever since CN purchased Great Lakes Transportation in 2004, including its rail properties, the Bessemer & Lake Erie, and Duluth Missabe & Iron Range, the area has become a haven for older second, and now third generation locomotives, toiling away likely the last years of their careers on a class 1 railway.
Due to work timing constraints, I only ended up with only a few scant hours in the region over two days, but I was determined to make the most of the that time shooting (hopefully) the 'older' power that I fondly remember plying the mainlines of North America in my youth.
The potential bonus of the timing of the trip was the potential for catching fall colours on the trees in the area. When researching the lines it became apparent right away that most of the photographic angles would have a very similar theme between them. Lineside shots, with the trains hemmed in by the deciduous forest, or shots from the numerous road overpasses. While the focus of my efforts would be documenting the last days of the locomotives, it would be a big bonus to have some colour on the trees to add interest to the potentially monotonous angles.
Unfortunately, unseasonably high temperatures delayed most of the trees from beginning the change in their leaves colours. Despite my best hopes, the timing of my trip was about a week or two too soon. In a weeks time, the trees would put on their show in proper, but that would be well after I had returned to the rainy northwest.
The Stalin statue in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood says, "You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs!" Sadly, this may well be my last yearly egg contribution because my beloved dumpr.net keeps automatically forwarding me to some other site that does not have an egg filter! I'll keep searching, though. Maybe a forgotten egg or two will stink their way out of their hiding places. :D

Salmoni Building l849, situated at the south-west intersection of Dalhousie and Richmond Streets. It is a three-storey brick building with a later cut-stone addition on the river (west) side. It stands on the town lot originally occupied by Thomas Reynolds in 1796.
Thomas Salmoni was an Amherstburg Merchant and hotel keeper. The Building he erected in 1849 served both as a hotel and a general store. A portion of the third floor was fitted up as a Masonic Lodge Room to accommodate the newly organized Thistle Lodge.
Salmoni was a Mason himself. At the river, Salmoni built a dock and erected warehouses to accommodate his forwarding business on the Great Lakes. In 1849 there still remained the tower of a windmill which in 1838 was one of the designated "strong points" chosen by Col. John Prince as suitable for defence of the western frontier in the Patriot troubles. It was actually so-used to give shelter to the militiamen when the Schooner Ann was making its attack on the Amherstburg Waterfront..
The Salmoni Family were originally from England. An account attributes their coming to America as follows: One of the Salmoni Brothers became a noted boxer and after being a champion in his home land decided to challenge the American boxers so came to the States where a match was arranged. The purse was "winner take All" beside which many private wagers were made. The Salmonis bet heavily on the family representative and when the contest was held and Salmoni was defeated, they were left without fund to return to England, but did have sufficient to make their way to Canada to Montreal, Thomas Salmoni later re-establishing himself came to Amherstburg.
The Salmoni business came to an end with the sudden death of Mark Salmoni, son of Thomas who had succeeded to the business. Michael Twomey and Daniel Henly were later merchants in the premises. They were followed by Emanuel Berube and his nephew Mr. Bedard. The Ira S. Brown Company and Andrew Balla were later proprietors after which the general merchandise format was changed to the "dime store' category which still continues.
