6x6cm medium format shot on Ilford FP4+ 125ASA developed in Kodak TMax developer and printed on Ilford Multigrade II RC paper, back in the days when I had a darkroom set up at home. I burned the sky in when printing in the darkroom. I digitised the print using an Epson XP-960 flatbed scanner and then processed the resulting TIF file using Cap One Pro 21. I took the photo back in 2002 using a tripod mounted Pentacon Six TL with a Carl Zeiss 50mm f/4 Flektagon wide angle lens and I'm reasonably sure it was somewhere along Glen Mullardoch in the Scottish Highlands.

Como ya tenía alguna con la roca centrada, hice una serie con composiciones similares a esta.

Ferrotip de format 5x7 polzades, realitzat amb una Gundlach Korona View, fabricada entorn 1920-26; objectiu Plaubel Anticomar; col·lodió Quin's Quick Clear de fabricació propia, revelador "estiuenc" amb sucre, també propi. Revelat in situ amb la meva caixa fosca CF-2t.
Els Cingles de Bertí, imponents, dominen el paisatge entorn Gallifa.
Les plaques de col·lodió es realitzen al moment, cobrint una placa de vidre o planxa metal·lica negra amb col·lodió i sals de cadmi i/o potassi, sensibilitzat amb nitrat de plata. Aleshores s'ha de fer la fotografia i revelar-la en uns 5 minuts, abans no s'assequi la emulsió. És un dels processos fotogràfics més antics del món, inventat el 1851, i que dominà fins el 1880. Però ara ha resorgit, ja que les imatges, molt treballades, que dona són úniques, màgiques i i irrepetibles.

The Cingles de Bertí is a cliff-faced range in Central Catalonia. It towers above the village of Gallifa.
The collodion plates are made covering a glass plate or black metal plate with collodion and salts of cadmium and / or potassium, sensitized with silver nitrate. Then you have to take the photo and reveal it in about 5 minutes, before the emulsion dries. It is one of the oldest photographic processes in the World, invented in 1851, and which dominated photography until 1880. But now it has resurfaced, as the images, very elaborate to create, that it gives are unique, razor sharp, magical and unrepeatable.

Shofuso Japanese House and gardens were built in 1958 in 16th century style. It is located on the grounds of the Horticultural Center in the West Philadelphia section of Fairmount Park. The perfectly proportioned architecture of the main structure and adjoining tea house is enhanced by an ornamental garden and picturesque pond. Tours of the house are available and periodically there are special events offered including tea ceremonies, bonsai plant showings and more. Finding a cultural nugget like this so close to the city of Philadelphia is very unique and special and definitely needs to be checked out if you are looking for something a little different.

Bronica SQ-A medium format film camera with a Bronica Zenzanon 65mm F4 PS lens.
Hoya Yellow-Green filter on lens.
Fuji Acros 100 film shot at ISO 100.
Semi-stand development using Kodak HC-110 1+100 dilution for 1 hour with 30 seconds initial agitation with swizzle stick and three turns @ 30 minute mark. Paterson 3 reel tank.
Negative scanned with Epson 4990 on holders fitted with ANR glass.

Recently, I heard a couple of people close to me ask why I was so dark? And if I was ok because my work reflected a sad-er existence, as opposed to my naturally brighter personality. This got me wondering about why exactly I do choose to create darker works, and if that reflects a part of myself.

I have always found photography is my sweet escape from only seeing the world in bright, happy colours. I feel the freedom to play with darker concepts, some of which are a deeper part of me, some being expressions of a fictional ideology. 💜

So if I were to be asked why I create such dark imagery again, I would feel more confident in answering, I would say:
1) Because there is beauty in darkness, truly.
2) Everybody has a sense of sadness that forms itself as a darkness, we can all feel connected in that.
3) Life isn't always bright, and it's important to openly talk about our sadness.
4) Because I can explore concepts that mean something to me (and hopefully others!)
5) I have a voice, one that is responsible for helping people. I hope my art can heal in some way.
