This view looking west is of what was once Clarke Jct., on January 4, 2013. The CSX Barr Sub is in the foreground with the old Buffington Cement Plant looming in the background. The former Ft. Wayne Line Connection Track that was constructed by Conrail to retire the former PRR through Whiting and East Chicago, is severed and abandoned.
Foreground is a bandstand although no bands ever play on it. This is best angle and picture of Heckmondwike as it's a grotty un-interesting town. I wa having a spell of shooting snow scenes and as I pass this most days I thought Id see what could be done. I like the row of shops just visible behind and the cross at far centre.
Some more good ol' DX on FX action.
Been doing more B&W lately, than I have in awhile. It fits. View On Black

A group of 7 Blainville's beaked whales at the surface. In the foreground is a very beaten-up large old male who leads the pod of 3 females and 3 juveniles.
I think that the house in the foreground might well have been Crook. The long-distance view is of Orkney's two highest hills -which are south of Stromness Town - on the North-West corner of Hoy Island. The highest - on the left - is Ward Hill, while the second highest is called "Cuilags".
The Loch Of Boardhouse is quite popular for trout-fishing and lies South-East of Birsay Village next to the Birsay to Dounby main-road.
(Foreground, left-right ), Jean de Dieu Habimana and Vincent Uwirereye, both 12, draw in an art class at the primary school in the village of Rubingo in Kigali Province, about 35 km from Kigali, the capital. Vincent lost his right hand in a landmine accident. UNICEF, in partnership with Right to Play and other NGOs, supports sports and other organized recreation and play activities in schools. Right To Play uses specially developed sports and play programmes to improve health, build life skills, provide psychosocial support and foster peace for children and communities affected by war, poverty or disease. UNICEF also supported construction of the school and its sports and play areas, provided educational supplies and latrines, and supports teacher-training at the child-friendly school. More than 1,220 children, almost half of them girls, attend the school..

In 2007 in Rwanda, young people comprise over half of the nation's more than 9.5 million inhabitants; but poverty, recurring food insecurity and the lingering effects of the 1994 genocide and of HIV/AIDS continue to threaten children's welfare and growth. Despite the many challenges, Rwanda is making progress, especially in the areas of gender parity and education. The country has the highest percentage of female parliamentarians in the world and has achieved gender parity in primary education. Primary school enrolment and completion rates have increased with the elimination of school fees, and the Government has launched a five-year education campaign to promote girls' enrolment, retention and achievement in primary and secondary schools. A catch-up programme to educate out-of-school children in several provinces is under way, and a national 'Child-Friendly School' model has been adopted. To help sustain progress, UNICEF works with the Government and a host of international and local partners to support an integrated package of health and child protection interventions for education, as well as for early childhood development. Initiatives include: teacher-training on child-centred methods, life-skills and HIV/AIDS education; peer education and vocational and life-skills training for adolescents; installation of safe water and sanitation facilities in schools, including separate latrines for girls and boys; health and nutrition programmes; catch-up curriculum development and non-formal education projects for vulnerable children, and school construction. UNICEF also supports other health, nutrition and protection programmes.
I tried for about an hour to get this shot and once I got home, I realized I was focused on buds and not so much the flowers. Womp womp. But I still love this shot.
Island steamer Tan-Auco Manila is in the foreground on the left. Behind the Bridge of Spain is the Insular Ice and Refrigeration Plant with the tall smoke stack. See the advertising sign Imperial Beer; the Americans had settled in with the ice plant to keep their beer cold.

The Buick with the mattresses in the foreground owned by displaced Ickes Homes residents. Of this new location, they say the crime is really bad, but still not as bad as it was Ickes.

Blooming flowers of wild Rhododenderon form a foreground to the rolling grasslands and Montane Evergreen forests of Mukurthi National Park in south-western India's Western Ghats.
Mukurthi National Park is in one of India's most beautiful districts - The Nilgiris. The park is located atop the Nilgiri Plateau and is home to some of India's most beautiful landscapes and endangered wildlife like Nigiri Tahr (a type of mountain goat) and Bengal Tiger.

ABOUT WESTERN GHATS:
Western Ghats, or Sahayadris as they are known in many Indian languages, are a 1600 km long chain of mountains that run parallel to the Arabian Sea in peninsular India. They give birth to almost all the major rivers of south India. These rivers provide drinking and irrigation water for more than 250 million people. The 'Ghats' are one of earth's designated 25 Bio-diversity 'Hot Spots'. They are home to some of earth's rarest flora and fauna and most spectacular landscapes.

c1910 real photo postcard view of South Broadway Street in Peru, Indiana. The women in the foreground were probably posing for the photographer. There was a bicyclist in the background behind them along with a horse-drawn buggy and a few pedestrians. The photographer was at the intersection with Main Street and facing east toward the southeast corner of the intersection. The 1906 and 1912 Sanborn™ fire insurance map sets for Peru showed few changes in the types of businesses in this block of South Broadway Street. The building on the corner was the Cole Block according to entries in a 1902 business directory.¹ It and the other two buildings north of the alley are still standing and in use as of 2017. The building south of the alley (right edge of this postcard) has been replaced.
Several business signs were readable in this scene, such as the large JULIUS FALK CLOTHIER sign atop the building on that southeast corner and another hanging on the face of that building. Both map sets show a clothing business at that location and a jewelry business next door in the south end of the building. The post clock standing at the curb advertised BABER & RANKIN JEWELERS. A sign above the store entrance also advertised their business. The lettering below the left display window included the word DIAMONDS. A sign below the display area on the right advertised PIANOS.
Upstairs, the windows advertised other businesses. The sign painted on the window to the right of the JULIUS FALK sign advertised THE METROPOLITAN LIFE INSURANCE CO. HARTFORD CONN. The second sign is unclear and the third advertised REAL ESTATE AND LOANS. The next three windows appear to advertise the Bailey & Cole Law Offices. Bailey & Cole were listed in the 1902 directory in offices 11-14 in the Cole Block at the corner of Main and Broadway.
Next door, the awning and a sign above the awning advertised CHARTERS BROWN & CO. The map sets show a hardware store with a tin shop in the back. Numerous objects were on display outside that store, including a stepladder and a screen door.
The year 1888 is carved into the pediment of the third building south of Main Street. The sign hanging from the second floor of that building advertised _____ LOAN CO. MONEY FOR LOAN UPSTAIRS. The 1902 business directory listed the Peru Building and Loan Association at 11½ South Broadway. The map sets don’t mention a business on the second floor. However, downstairs, the 1906 map set shows a gent’s furnishings and jewelry business at 9 South Broadway while the 1912 map set shows a jewelry business. The sign below the second-floor windows advertised C. N. METZNER at that location and the 1902 directory included a listing for C. M. Metzner, a jeweler at 9 South Broadway. A small jeweler’s post clock stood at the curb in front of that store. Next door, at 11 South Broadway Street, the map sets show a stationery, books and wallpaper business. The 1902 directory listed the Royal Sign Company at 11 South Broadway Street.
The I. O. O. F. (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) building stood south of the alley at 13-15 South Broadway Street. The business sign nearest the alley advertised McCARTHY. The 1902 directory listed McCarthy, D. F., Saloon and Billiards, at 13 South Broadway. Both map sets show a saloon at that location.
