A meteor flashes in the foreground of Comet ASAS-SN1 (C/2017 O1) as it cruises in front of the stars of the constellation Camelopardalis on the evening of October 17, 2017. At the time the comet was over 107 million km (67 million miles) from Earth and over 224 million km (139 million miles) from the Sun.

Image Details: Taken by Jay Edwards at the HomCav Observatory, the attached is a single frame taken from a sequence over two dozen fairly short exposure images which are planned to be converted into an animation showing the comet's movement in front of the background stars. The exposures were kept rather short in order to reduce the trailing resulting from the apparent difference in movement across our sky between the comet and the stars. Slightly cropped, this image spans approximately 2 1/2 degrees (i.e. 5 full-moon widths) of the sky, edge-to-edge. Taken using an Orion ED80T CF Triplet apochromatic refractor connected to a 0.8x Televue field flattener & focal reducer, CamRanger, IPad and Canon 700D DSLR; and guided by an Orion StarShoot autoguider connected to an Orion 60mm, f/4 guidescope; both riding on an Orion SkyView Pro goto mount guided by PHD2, it has been resized down here to HD resolution and the bit depth lowered from 16 to 8 bits per channel to reduce the file size.

The Sculpture Gallery at Chatsworth was the creation of William Spencer Cavendish, 6th duke of Devonshire (1790-1858). It was finished and refurbished in 1834, and has been restored to its appearance at the time of the duke's death in 1858. The 'Wounded Achilles' by Carlo Albaccini (1777-1858) in the foreground. Further back, Bertel Thorvaldsen's bust of Cardinal Ercole Consalvi, and Antonio Canova's bust of Napoleon.

Had a trip down to Steetley Magnesite in Hartlepool tonight, only to find that it was a pile of rubble so we had a walk onto the beach and I happened to stumble across a pair of underpants...

Well they do tell you to include foreground interest!

More for the comedy value than its photographic contribution.

A little vignetting with Lightroom. Also set the sharpening mask to emphasize the foreground flowers and leaves. One of my personal favorites. Featured in my photo essay “Flora in Focus.”

I'm not sure I like this shot, but here it is anyway if only for critique.

Something about this struck me as out of place.

I was sitting at a red light, as I am often doing on my ride home from work, and saw her walking across the street. The pink bag, and bright white hoodie struck me as out of place in the otherwise less-than-pristine downtown.

I had been out doing errands in the neighborhood and, as luck would have it, passed a school, which was just letting out. Many of the students displayed the sublime energy of youth as they made their way onto the sidewalk. Here are three photos, numbered in the order taken. (There were many, many others; this is but a selection.)

The dollar bill in the second shot could really come in handy here--it's the price of a bag of cotton candy. When I saw from a distance the multicolored cotton candy hanging from their home-made perch, my heart gladdened--a guaranteed photo op! I took quite a few shots of this man and his young customers, although in most of them, the man's face was in profile and was mostly hidden by his hood. Here, he's spotted me and is even giving me a gentle, Buddha-like smile.

The girl in the white hat, who's clearly a child although looking nearly middle-aged, was behaving as 'mother' to her younger siblings, paying for the cotton candy, etc. She's seen me too--and gives a world-weary gaze--BUT is carrying a long, perhaps school-made snake over her arm. (Or perhaps she brought in in for show-and-tell...) Along with the afore-mentioned reasons, I chose to post this shot because it had the best view of the lovely snake!

Another interesting aspect of this photo is that it illustrates the hills in this neighborhood. Just beyond the group in the foreground, you can see the ground going up, to where the zebra street-crossing begins. After that, it goes up again as the next block begins, where, ironically, there is a 'CANDY' store sign. At the upper left, there is an ancient & rusting, cast-iron red column (perhaps an early version of the fire alarm call box), leaning over like the Tower of Pisa due to the fact that another hill begins here, going up toward Wadsworth Ave.

All of those hills give the neighborhood the second half of its name, 'Washington Heights;' it is the location the highest point on the island of Manhattan. George Washington built a fort here during the Revolutionary War (of independence from Great Britain), whence the name 'Washington.'

As part of my work, I was driving from the Southeast BC coalmines back to the Calgary Airport. I love to take Highway 22 and was hoping to get some good light. Leaving Sparwood a bit before sunrise, I scouted the backroads (especially the Burmis Road just west of Highway 22) and was rewarded with some lovely early morning light, and a fresh spring dusting of snow on the mountains.

This area of foothills where the prairie meets the montane is one of my favourite spots, and I always look forward to this drive.

I first visited this site in the early 1980s and was interested to see what still remained after a period of over 30 years. Access was difficult though, the site is very overgrown with thick brambles and we were unable to explore some areas I was desperate to peek into.

Different perspective of a favorite photo of mine last year.

My father used to tell me stories when I was a little kid about the adventures of a fictious seagull called Molly. I wanted to pass this tradition to my son and thought it would be a nice start to introduce him like this:

"Look over there son, that is the seagull Molly sitting on the tower wall."

His answer somewhat surprised me: " No dad, that is Rosie. Molly just flew away over there..."

This concludes my Elba series, just in case you started thinking about when I would stop to bore you with my travel pictures...

This is for my Drawing 2 class, had to make an object with a background and incorporate them together in the design. I went real experimental with different types of inks to emphasize my object, the spraycan.

Unusual to see three inshore life boats together.

I believe the RNLI college is a short distance away so this probably accounts for the number of boats together.
