A new series of works from a recent trip to Wanganui...
Perhaps one of the bleakest entries to a major public building that I have experienced. This shot is taken from the entry doors, looking back out into the equally bleak plaza. The covered entry has all the elegance of a carparking building, and no acknowledgement of civic function or ceremony. The low expanse of ceiling above you, combined with the fact that you know that you have walked under the 'floating cubic mass', makes this a rather awkward and forboding space - I doubt whether this was the intent of the architects, although it could be seen as appropriate to a war memorial hall...
I did edit out a car (seen here ) to play this entrance off against the Classical formality of that across the plaza, but could have left it in as being symptomatic of the sense of space engendered by the WMH...
This sub-series features the Wanganui War Memorial Hall - a fine example of pre-war international Modernism realised right here in litlle old 'Wangas' (albeit a couple of decades behind its international precedents).

An empire of fierce warriors are lead by the 'Allfather' 'Sargon Sargoni' on his home world 'Labodinaux'. He feels he has been mislead after hearing of a plot to subvert his throne by Master Dagon. Dagon's secret use of the Book of Enchantment to conjure his 'Dagger Knights creates a forboding dread in Sagon's subconsciousness, which produces a deformity in his relationship with the Dagger Knights. There is a desperate struggle between his twin sons 'Sabrini and Saggat Sargoni' to take their father' place as Allfather and rule the galaxy, this sibiling rivalry launches a massive war campaign against more planets, Quadrillon and the prehistoric world Trilos are targeted. Upon conquering the planet Arbain the reigning Princess to the throne of Arbain 'Phahailia' catches the eye of the warrior king who is at odds with his her planet. Will her desire to love him help or doom her people to a life of tyranny? After finding out what gives Master Dagon and his Dagger Knights their powers, the Allfather Sargon rallies a great deception to acquire the Book of Enchantment with help from a mercenary clan from a planet he is at war with Quadrillon.
The scientist of the planet Arbain create interdimensional ships 'the Turmoil' a powerful ship capable of mass destruction and interdimentional travel is one of Arbain's master acheivements. It is confiscated by the Allfather Sargon. The visionary priestess 'Lazora', attendant to the princess, betrays all that she believes in, and later becomes a concubine to the sons of 'Sargon', deceiving and helping to enslave her people.

There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact its all dark.
And if your head explodes with dark forbodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
Sometimes walking around the city in the winter is downright scary.

St Francis Xavier's Church in HDR. A forboding sky, but the crucifix on the perimeter wall is nicely picked out in light. Cue angels singing ....
This old skool vintage, type toaster complete with silly flower pattern.
For some reason, in this picture it looks strangely ominous and forboding...as if its the master of puppets in the dark toaster underground kingdom.
Located in Mittagong, the Tooth and Co brewery has been abandonded since 1981, closed due to fire damage and rising costs. Inside the forboding exterior facade, the two remaining buildings have a number of floors, several of which are difficult to reach. Colourful graffiti covers many surfaces, and some stairs and entire floors are missing. Despite this, it was a delight to explore and photograph.
The forboding sky driving towards Leh - amazingly enough, the next day was fine and no flight delays. A good time was had by all!
...and what a glorious day it was!
Amanda, Jordan and I all packed into Ruby the Subaru (in Jordan's words: "A German guided Japanese chariot") and set forth to explore both coasts of this lovely island.
And happend the last time around, forboding clouds and nasty weather forcasts gave way upon our arrival, and we had a truely glorious experience on the real west coast. Here is the first batch of snippets from that great day one week ago... more to come after work tonight. :)
I was looking through my old poto archive cd's from back a few years ago, and stumbled upon this gem.
now i am not normally the landscape scenery type of dood, but this image struck me as being a typical evening in this city. and though i have seen (and taken) shots from this vantage point before, this one sings to me.
a bit bright, a bit dank, really hazy, and kind of grainy.

Sunset tonight when I left work. It's pretty flat and the high tension lines and towers pretty much dominate the sunsets so I don't shoot many of them from here. Hit "L" for more viewing pleasure.
pete looking quite moody and quite frankly menacing..a very powerful spotlight exposed with highest priority
Another one of Fox Glacier many features. I don't remember this one though, and don't remember taking the shot. It looks pretty dark and forboding so I think I can assume we kept moving rather than investigating its icey depths.
looking out over one of the rivers flowing near Khanty-Mansiysk. I don't recall if this was the Ob or the Irtysh.

We had never actually been in a corn maze before so it had to be done
As you clip in to these behemoths there is a sense of awe, forboding and that you're about to undertake something rather serious. The Goliaths aren't skis for the uninitiated- more for when you've hammered down every run in resort, off piste or on, and there seems to be no challenges left to grapple so you think in a primordial way- hey, I'll strap a pair of these on and see if I can survive the ride.
And the ride is fantastic, in any snow, over any chopped up porridge, hard pack or crusty frozen horredness these things just fly over, through and strip away the imperfections letting you wield your way wherever you desire. I skied both the 184 and 191 length and was very happy on both but perhaps had mmore confidence to attack the hill with the longer length. Either way they ski with amazing fluidity and dampening- the blend of woods in the core can be felt in the flex pattern. There is definite rigidity underfoot for stability and a noticeable softenss in comaprison at the tip and tail that allows a ski of such huge dimensions to be tolerable and useable- this is a marked improvement over many of the old school skis from three or four years ago that had all the dimensions but non of the spohistication of a ski like the Goliath.
An excellent package then for excellent, seasoned skiers who spend enough time in the mountains to have the legs, the snow and the time to take advantage of such pure Freeride skis.

I think this image looks really ominous, hence the title. With the dark clouds, the warehouse and mountain in the backround creates an unerving feel to the piece.
Dave and Julie walking towards bad weather at Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales. Luckily the wind direction meant it just missed us, but the sky did look very dark and wet over there (thats not to say we didnt get our fair share of rain on the walk, or wind for that matter - you should have seen the speed of the clouds moving!)
Today I decided to hike out to Little Sheguiandah. On one side of me the skies were dark and forboding, on the other sunny and hopeful.

Acquedotto pont Ru Prevot. At Porossan, {near ) Italy. This aqueduct/bridge was built in 1288AD . When I visited, it was almost obscured by heavy foliage. The only way to cross was to clamber through the dark and forboding water channel. (fun)
