Here’s a few foldy things for you.
Steps: Print, cut, fold, glue, enjoy. I think that’s more steps than setting up an iMac.
Even when printed as large as possible on 8 1/2 x 11 paper, these are fairly hard to deal with. Better would be 11 x 17. Bonus: printing on textured paper, or paper with some sort of design or adding a design to your image before printing results in a cool-looking object.
Cut them out using an xacto blade and a cutting mat. If you’re a masochist, you could try scissors. I’d at least suggest surgical scissors, big ‘ol craft scissors will likely drive you batty.
I still haven’t figured out the best glue to use. Wood glue works great if you can figure out a way to hold the pieces of paper together long enough to have the glue dry. Hot glue works, but is messy even when you do it perfectly, and you also have to hold the pieces together while the glue is steaming hot. Potentially painful. I’d almost suggest super glue, but I’ve never had luck with that stuff.
I’m picturing these as hanging objects in my studio apartment. I have a high ceiling that would be nice to fill with a few of these in different colors. If you think about the size of each little face though, even a poster sized print will only give me something like a 1′ object.
Scientists have been making nanoparticles for more than two decades in two-dimensional sheets, three-dimensional crystals and random clusters. But they have never been able to get a sheet of nanoparticles to curve or fold into a complex three-dimensional structure. Now researchers from the University of Chicago, the University of Missouri and the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory have found a simple way to do exactly that.
The findings open the way for scientists to design membranes with tunable electrical, magnetic and mechanical properties that could be used in electronics and may even have implications for understanding biological systems. Read more »
The research used resources at the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), Advanced Photon Source (APS), the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center.
ABOVE: Argonne researchers are able to fold gold nanoparticle membranes in a specific direction using an electron beam because two sides of the membrane are different.

And here the softbox is folded into a nice little package :) The diameter is about 27 cm and it's about 3 cm thick, which means it's easy to put into the camera bag; and with its total weight of 860 g it's not that heavy either :)
The Mesh Files
A folding-experiment-series of user generated and computer aided mesh structures with semi flexible material. An originally flat and planar surface is bent as a result of force based deformation.
Resulting folds in the presented artifacts are formed in response to temporarily applied compressive stresses to different sections of the surface. Due to the non-fluid characteristics of the surface, it is not able to deform like an ideal fluid but instead bucks and forms folds.
A two dimensional mesh grid is generated by a custom made software. the amount of cells per gird is based on the amount of cells when folding paper xy-times into half - that is 2 to the power of x for all columns and 2 to the power of y for all rows. Each rectangular cell is divided into 2 triangles by adding a diagonal edge. The mesh now consists of n-amount of edges and m-amount of vertices.
The software allows the user to displace individual vertices of the mesh based on a given set of rules. The vertices located at the boundaries of the mesh can only be moved along its corresponding axis. This restriction allows the mesh to maintain it's original rectangular shape.
Foam board 3mm white is used as source material. Foam board consists of three layers. Enclose the core foam layer is enclosed by 2 layers of paper. The computer generated mesh is projected onto each foam board. During the process of making, the foam core and one paper layer is cut with a pen-knife for every edge of the applied mesh.
Silhouette design.......cut out and added it to white cardstock, then punched holes and tied up with ribbon.

Foldable Tree
Materials used; carboard, knife, sticky tape, glue, pencil and paper
Technique: Drew the tree onto a plain piece of paper, then using sticky tape stuck this to two pieces of cardboard the same size. Using a shape knife cut the tree out. I then folded the two trees made of cardboard in half, then stuck the folds together back to back using a line of glue. I then tested it stuck in a book and it does pop up when opened.
Difficulties; the main trouble I had was drawing a tree design I liked.
The folding chairs found on Ebay were refinished and covered with the couch material to tie them in to the interior.
Soldiers watch their comrades coasting down with Montague Paratrooper folding bikes attached to them. The bikes fold down and fit into a case which the soldiers can jump with.

Cyclefest's various exciting races at Salt Ayre, Lancaster, included a race for folding bikes. The bikes start off folded, with a Le Mans style start. You raced half a lap, folded your bike, folded a piece of paper to make a paper aeroplane which you had to fly through your bike's wheel, then unfold and race to the finish line. Perfectly ridiculous, of course.
