Hexham Abbey by John Stock

Hexham Abbey is a place of Christian worship dedicated to St Andrew and located in the town of Hexham, Northumberland, in northeast England. Since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537, the Abbey has been the parish church of Hexham.

There has been a church on the site for over 1300 years since Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria made a grant of lands to Wilfrid, Bishop of York c.674. Of Wilfrid's Benedictine abbey, which was constructed almost entirely of material salvaged from nearby Roman ruins, the Saxon crypt still remains; as does a frith stool, a 7th/8th century cathedra or throne.For a little while around that time it was the seat of a bishopric.

In the year 875 Halfdene (Halfdan Ragnarsson) the Dane ravaged the whole of Tyneside and Hexham Church was plundered and burnt to the ground.[2]

About 1050 one Eilaf was put in charge of Hexham, although as treasurer of Durham, he probably never came there. Eilaf was instructed to rebuild Hexham Church which then lay in utter ruin. His son Eilaf II completed the work, probably building in the Norman style.

In Norman times Wilfrid's abbey was replaced by an Augustinian priory. The current church largely dates from that period (c.1170–1250), in the Early English style of architecture. The choir, north and south transepts and the cloisters, where canons studied and meditated, date from this period.

The east end was rebuilt in 1860. The Abbey was largely rebuilt during the incumbency of Canon Edwin Sidney Savage who came to Hexham in 1898 and remained until 1919. This mammoth project involved re-building the nave, whose walls incorporate some of the earlier church and the restoration of the choir. The nave was re-consecrated on 8 August 1908.

In 1996 an additional chapel was created at the east end of the north choir aisle. Named St Wilfrid's Chapel, it offers a place for prayer or quiet reflection.

ZEN MAGNETS - Neodymium Magnetic Balls (@432) - 2R-Hex Architecture Design - (Detail: Connection point [rear] for very top tip)

This was created for the Zen Magnets 2R-Hex Architecture contest ... zenmagnets.com/blog/?p=236

The end result is a very portable Zen Corporate Headquarters Building design doubling as a trans-warp universe hopper spaceship ... making it possible for Zen Magnets to be anywhere in the galaxy and beyond.

The challenge on this design was two-fold: limiting subunit designs to 2L-Hex sheet variations and getting something balanced and architecturally stable enough to stand up on its own without the use of a metal sheet.

This was constructed entirely of 2-R-Hex (2-layer Hexagon sheets) folded and combined in various ways.

St Mary, Northrepps, Norfolk

The great tower of Northrepps may not quite match those of its near neighbours Cromer and Southrepps, but it is still a spectacular sight rising above the folding valleys of north-east Norfolk. Frank Allen thought highly enough of it to include it in his seminal 1932 work The Great Church Towers of England, as an example of quite how fine a Norfolk church tower could be.

There are surviving Norman windows in the chancel, but this is very much a church of the late Middle Ages. A huge amount of money was spent here in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Pevsner notes that stone was bought from Yorkshire for the aisle parapets, and the tower battlements are specifically mentioned as to be built in the 1520s. Externally, this is one of the great East Anglian Perpendicular churches.

However, even from the outside you can tell that a great amount was also done here in the 19th century. The clerestory, for example, was rebuilt at this time. And inside, the restoration was overwhelming. To all intents and purposes, you step into a fairly simple 19th century church, accentuating the grandeur of the east window in the south aisle depicting the archangels St Gabriel, St Michael and St Raphael, a host of angels above them, by Hardman & Co. It was the only thing I'd remembered from my previous visit in 2005. Clayton & Bell's east window is typically mundane by comparison, but to see it you step through the remains of a 15th century roodscreen which was, says Mortlock, rescued from a barn. Much of the carving on it is Victorian, but the dedicatory inscription appears to be genuinely medieval. It has had its prayer clause erased, but you can still make out the name John Playford.

A more familiar Norfolk name is associated with this church nowadays. The Gurneys lived at Northrepps Hall, and there are a number of nice modern memorials in the south aisle. Further west along the same aisle, the royal arms are very jolly indeed, the lion and the unicorn looking as if they are having a whale of a time. They are labelled for George III, but are actually the early Stuart arms of a century and a half earlier. Curiously, the lion appears to have had his manhood erased, but not the unicorn.
