I held a series of three sessions at KPF NY demonstrating severals ways to transform a flat single sheet of paper into a complex form. I demonstrated folds that used both standard origami techniques (square paper, no cutting) and more modern approaches (laser-cut and -scored curves). The square forms date back to the Bauhaus movement and I was inspired by the work I did for Erik and Marty Demaine when choosing the shapes of the curved forms. Special thanks also to Alex Soijka who helped with the video.

This tin-plated iron lunch box was patented in 1871 by Charles C. Moore. The box folds in flat on itself. The lunch box has a black and red plaid exterior, and the top is adorned with the text “Moore’s Patented Folding Lunch Box.” About three inches tall in its box form; it collapses down to less than half an inch when folded.

well you just know that any visit to New York simply has to have some pictures of iconic symbols....
:-)
Direct scan of a folding Valentine's Day card. I need to photograph it standing up. It's cute as can be.
After hours of folding all 4 sides, the draft is complete (back side). Decided to shape the back pleats a little. Things get really tiny even on this large kami... Will fold the neat display version next month when I come back to it. Will attempt to freefold some new structures next. (EDIT May 8 update: Swiveled both points on each side to be facing upwards)

We restored this vintage folding model, and added a dropbars. The Sturmey Archer 3 speed internal rear hub was also reconditioned. Note 2nd interrupter brake levers,
According to the designer this bike can fold up, serve as a chair, video tripod and catapult small animals as far as 200 meters.

Bicycles not allowed unless both folding and folded. They also have some fairly excessive regulations regarding putting bikes in bags.
9 Folding bikes and lockers
=====================
9.1 Folding bikes are the only type of bike allowed on Metro but they must
be fully folded on Metro property.
9.2 Under our Health and Safety policy, we advise that some folding bikes need to be placed in bags:
Folding bikes that should be carried in a bag:-
Bikes that when folded, have handlebars, and / or pedals sticking
out which could cause injury. Also if the chain is not enclosed, the
folding bike should be placed in a bag. We don’t specify the type
of bag used. However, bags should be strong enough to prevent
handlebars and pedals from causing any injury
Folding bikes that don’t need to be placed in a bag:-
Bikes that fold so that handlebars and pedals don’t stick out and
risk causing injury to Metro passengers. The folding system
should enclose the chain so other passengers are not put at risk of
getting oil on their clothing
9.3 Cycle lockers are available at several Metro stations throughout the
system. You can use these free of charge*. For details visit our website
£30 deposit required but this is refundable when you return your
locker key.

Townsend Fold signal box on the Down side of the line by Holme Lane level crossing at Rawtenstall. Saturday 28th August 1993
Townsend Fold signal box is a British Railways London Midland Region type 15 design fitted with a 10 lever London Midland Region Standard frame that opened as a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing on 29th March 1959, replacing an 1878 built 22 lever Saxby & Farmer type 9 design signal box located on the opposite side of the line. The signal box was operated by a travelling gatekeeper from 5th June 1972 until 5th December 1980 when traffic ceased. The line between Heywood Ground Frame and Rawtenstall was officially closed on 8th April 1981 although a series of specials were operated on 28th March 1982. Ownership passed to the East Lancashire Railway who reopened it as a non block post on 29th March 1991 and renamed it Townsend Fold Level Crossing in 2003
The signal box carries a British Railways London Midland Region maroon enamel nameplate
