I have for quite a while been facinated by surface tension, but have never really been successful in turning that into a successful photograph. I think this one almost succeeds. Maybe something worth persisting with.
Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) with a german wasp (Vespula germanica). Both found in the garden (Boom, Belgium, 8th October 2023). Asian hornets are invasive and prey on bees, flies & wasps.

9 image focus stack. Don't look too closely at the flowers. The idea was to get the flowers in the foreground, which were moving in the breeze, and the hills of the peninsula in the background in focus together.
Photoshop did a pretty good job matching up the various images, but I had to do some erasing of the blooms, which ended up in two places at the same time.

This is from a succulent plant that is native to Chile and grows abundantly along the California central coast.
Woodland at Henfield Common, Sussex. Ten images stacked in Zerene. I accidentally shot these in jpeg, but was very happy with the results.
Couple of Green Leafhoppers (Cicadella viridis; Cicadellidae, Hemiptera). Found in a wet meadow (Latvia, Valmiera, 22nd August 2023).
This species is hard to photograph from closeby, but these two didn't notice me I think.

My local expert suggested the species name. Truth in storytelling: the water drops were added.
The next stage in #macro #photography is to do some focus stacking. This tulip leaf was shot six times, turning the front wheel of the macro bellows slightly each time. This changed the plane of focus (as well as magnification) slightly, and Photoshop breezily took care of the end result.
