The second alcohol ink practice piece for today. The challenge so far is that I could easily lose the overall composition while working on the details.

Pineal is painted on a 1/2" medium density fiberboard panel (MDF). This painting is ready to hang in either vertical orientation.
Pineal is from a group of small paintings that begin as a circle of manipulated media. Media is add to this circle until there is a "rupture". Once the rupture occurs the media is further manipulated until it feels right.
Pineal "a pea-sized conical mass of tissue behind the third ventricle of the brain, secreting a hormone-like substance in some mammals."
"The pineal gland was once dubbed the “third eye,” which originated for many reasons, ranging from its location deep in the center of the brain to its connection to light. Also, the French philosopher and mathematician René Descartes was fascinated with the pineal gland."
"The pineal gland was described as the “Seat of the Soul” by Renee Descartes and it is located in the center of the brain. The main function of the pineal gland is to receive information about the state of the light-dark cycle from the environment and convey this information to produce and secrete the hormone melatonin."

Lynch Brain is painted on a 3/4" medium density fiberboard (MDF) panel. This painting hangs in either vertical orientation.
Lynch Brain is a reference to David Lynch's brain. This painting started in the early days of my transition from oil to water based media and continued through the years as a patterned based abstraction until 2020 when the floating green organ with a resin finish concluded this 18 year project.
This is a heavily worked panel that retained an atmospheric feel for most of its becoming. I couldn't really say what all lies under the different paint surfaces.

mixed paint media on black plexiglass panel
purchase at brucerileygallery.com/products/freak-flag
Freak Flag is painted on a 1/4" opaque black plexiglass panel. The panel is mounted on 1/2" plexiglass spacers.
Freak Flag has multiple paint and resin layers with the finish layer being resin. Freak Flag started as an organic dot pattern on black. A black glaze was applied covering the dots in a self leveling media. The effect of the glaze floats the dots up from a murky depth. The dots are a bit soft around the edges. Sometime later a layer of clear resin was applied. This was done to cover damage in all probability. The painting sat around and got damaged some more until this year I reworked a bunch of small stuff laying around. I just haven't had the energy to sustain an eight foot vision. That will come later. With this painting I feel like I'm taking notes. The title references long haired males of the sixties letting "their freak flags fly". The central animal shape has a waver to it as if it were an early TV screen getting bad reception. It's a ghost of a painting that took eleven years to make.

Jacked is painted on a 1 1/2" hollow core panel panel .
Jacked was originally a commission from a car company to make several films of my paint spreading on two foot panels. The films were to be used as source material for touch screens in driverless cars. They wanted the human touch. I suggested setting me up with a studio in Paris for a year would yield some good source material. I've not heard back. The films can be seen on my website.
I got to keep all but one of the paintings per contract. This painting sat around for several years until 2019 when I started reworking it.

Sounding is painted on a 1 1/2" hollow core panel panel . The paint layer is 1/8 " thick. The painting can hang in any of its vertical or horizontal positions.
Sounding is one of two paintings in a loose diptych . The other painting is called Sonar. These two painting were originally an experiment in patterns. Sonar's central image is painted over the more organized dot pattern where Sounding's underlying pattern is organic.

Acrylic painting using the "flip cup" technique. It actually took a bit of experimenting to get the process down (and lots of scouring the internet for information).
It's not readily visible here, but it has some metallic golds.
Inspired by the warm streaks of light over an evening sky in summer.

When this painting was done the title John Wayne Gacy popped into my head when I sat back and looked at it. That direct association was to severe for me so I went with Galoot.
