This painting was originally named, "Pinkeye" 2010. It was rotated 90 degrees clockwise and repainted. (Pinkeye > Eye of the Storm > Irma, (hurricane Irma, Sept - Aug. 2017)

So far this one took me the least amount of time to finish. I think a quick decision and a prompt action are quite necessary for this medium.

Buddha is painted on a 1/4" opaque black plexiglass panel. The panel is mounted on 1/2" plexiglass.

Buddha has multiple paint layers with a finish layer of resin. I consider this painting to be a portrait of sorts.

I am currently taking part in the UKMON Fireball Challenge, and my challenge is to create an astronomy sketch or piece of astronomy art every day for 2 months.

This is my day 33 artwork and it's an acrylic fluid art painting depicting a supernova remnant. It isn't based on anything in particular; it's just an artist representation of a fictional supernova remnant.

I created this painting using a Dutch Pour technique. My acrylic paint was mixed one part paint to two parts Floetrol as a pouring medium then water was added until I had a very fluid consistency. The paints were poured into the centre of the canvas then I blew them out, initially with a hairdryer, then using a straw. The day after, once the background had almost fully dried, I added individual stars using embossing tools dipped into white paint, and the finer stars were added by flicking a toothbrush.

Daft, 2002 - 2017, is painted on a 1/4" mdf panel mounted on a wooden frame.

The central image in Daft is executed over an early experiment with self leveling materials. The darker monochromatic under painting creates an organic armature for the brighter center form as it's colors gently vibrate. I recommend holding the painting at a comfortable length and looking at it like an album cover.

I think of Daft as off kilter, madcap, outside the normal, delightfully unexpected but not dangerous. Daft seemed to fit my response to this painting.

Mandible Chatter is painted on a 1/4" mdf panel . The paint layer is 1/2 " thick.

It is hard to tell how many layers this painting has. Not that it has innumerable layers. More that I just can not make out. A resin top coat was allowed to pour over obscuring the layer separations. The yellow background was a test panel from a project. A layer of resin with black particles is poured over this first paint layer. The upper layers sit suspended above glowing darkly with the light that is transmitted through the clear resin layers below. At one time during this panting's evolution it was titled Angle Dust.

This is a dark painting that does well in light but not direct sun. I recommend holding at a comfortable distance it like a record album.

Silent Running is a painting that is not easily dissected. It was painted in numerous sittings using translucent media making it hard to discern the different layers. It probably has at least one resin layer that separates paint layers above and below. This painting could have continued to be layered with more paint and resin if I had not decided it was finished. I was about to start a new paint layer on top of what is now the finished resin surface when I understood it did not need more. Usually this type of self restraint looses. Silent Running uses lighter underpainting to illuminated upper layers of translucent media and reticulated pigment dispersions.

Sputnik is painted on a 3/4" mdf panel . The paint layer is 1/8 " thick.

Sputnik is one of a group of found 16" square format panels. There is student art on the back of each painting.

This painting took on a sense of portraiture that I liked. What type of being is it referencing is hard to tell. Against the blue green of the textured central image are some warm pigment dispersions. The bottom cloud was encouraged to grow and reticulate creating a mouth space. The two top antenna were controlled into a specific shape. The head is defined by overlapping shapes. Transparency was an obvious concern in the making of Sputnik. A resin finish layer flattens all surface texture to a smooth shinny flat screen.

If you must know, this one has been redone three times! Just drop more isopropyl alcohol to start all over.

I am getting a hang of this alcohol ink, I think! Thank you for all the amazing artists who post a how-to out there. A hair dryer seems to give a more gentle flow.

Sea Monkey is painted on a 1 1/2" hollow core panel panel . The paint layer is 1/8 " thick.

"My Sea Monkey went to the river and now we are friends."

Sea Monkey was originally a commission from a car company to make several films of my paint spreading on two foot panels. The films were to be used as source material for touch screens in driverless cars. They wanted the human touch. I suggested setting me up with a studio in Paris for a year would yield some good source material. I've not heard back. The films can be seen on my website. www.bruce-riley

I got to keep all but one of the paintings per contract. This painting sat around for several years until 2019 when I started reworking it.

Quid is painted on a 1 1/2' hollow core panel. Quid has a finish layer of resin over a pigment dispersion of carbon black that floats above another resin layer that covers the yellow background layer. When you enlarge the image above, it seems unfocused because of the delicate black pigment dispersion is casting a shadow in exact profile. The yellows used for the background have a green tint to them that plays with the natural warmth of the black pigment. You can see the transition from yellow to green to brown. This is a quiet painting

Quid can be hung in any orientation; vertical or horizontal.

Chewed and expectorated quids are indigestible stringy fibers from the roasted inner pulp of agave or yucca root that hold human DNA from earlier civilizations. Quid became a group of small paintings that I thought had reached an end until this piece came about.

Floater is a heavily layer painting that slowly grew over the course of 13 years. You can see the magnification of light around its edges. The central image might appear a bit blurry due to the paint layers casting shadows on to the lower layers.

Star Maker is painted on a 1 1/2" hollow core panel . I work flat using self leveling media. This painting is built up with alternating layers of paint and clear resin. The paint/resin layer is thick with a physical depth that allows light to enter the painting and reflect back up through translucent glazes glowing with an inner light.

Star Maker is in reference to star-formation activities in space.

Jimmy is painted on a 1/2" medium density fiberboard panel (MDF). This painting hangs in either vertical orientation. When Jimmy is hung 180 degrees from the image here it is called "Upside Down Jimmy".

Jimmy has been in progress for fifteen years. My small work is painted on upcycled panels and usually start as a gesture or an experiment to see what will happen. These paintings get worked and reworked until the seem done.

I've been making some portraits of imaginary organisms the past year or so. They always start out as organic abstractions but somewhere along the line they pick up a personality that lends itself to being interpreted as a portrait. This painting Jimmy is one of these portraits.

My grandfather Eli had all kinds of pets, domestic and wild. He named a lot of these animals Jimmy.
