Seamount is painted on a 1 1/2" hollow core panel panel . The paint layer is 1/8 " thick.

Seamount was originally a commission from a car company to make several films of my paint spreading on two foot panels. The films were to be used as source material for touch screens in driverless cars. They wanted the human touch. I suggested setting me up with a studio in Paris for a year would yield some good source material. I've not heard back, The films can be seen on my website. www.bruce-riley

I got to keep all but one of the paintings per contract. This painting sat around for several years until 2019 when I started reworking it. The paint layer is built up from the original commission with a loose, accidental hand. On top of the dried paint I applied a thin coat of resin. Another paint layer was applied on top of the dried resin surface.

If you must know, this one has been redone three times! Just drop more isopropyl alcohol to start all over.

Navigator was developed during the covid pandemic. Its focus on tight detail can be attributed to a lack of materials due to the supply chain breakdown. This painting has multiple layers embedded in resin with a matte surface texture. Because of the mat surface descending layers will increasingly appear blurry. The title Navigator is based on David Lynch's representation of a guild navigator from his version of the movie Dune.

Bless is painted on a 1/2" medium density fiberboard panel (MDF). This painting is ready to hang in either vertical orientation.

Bless has been in progress a couple of years. My small work is painted on upcycled panels and usually start as a gesture or an experiment to see what will happen. These paintings get worked and reworked until they seem done.

Bless seems to have two organisms in a symbiotic relationship floating in an alien landscape.

Ophiocordyceps is a genus of fungi within the family Ophiocordycipitaceae. The widespread genus, first described scientifically by British mycologist Tom Petch in 1931, contains about 140 species that grow on insects. Anamorphic genera that correspond with Ophiocordyceps species are Hirsutella, Hymenostilbe, Isaria, Paraisaria, and Syngliocladium.

One species complex, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, is known for its parasitism on ants, in which it alters the behavior of the ants in such a way as to propagate itself more effectively, killing the ant and then growing its fruiting bodies from the ant's head and releasing its spores. To accomplish this, infected ants are stripped of their instinctive fear of heights, and leaving the relative safety of their nests, climb up the nearest plant—a syndrome known as "summit disease". The ant clamps it jaws around the plant in a "death grip" and following, mycelia grow from the ant's feet and stitch them to the surface of the plant. The spores released from the ant carcass fall to the ground and infect other ants that come in contact with the spores so that this cycle continues. Areas with high densities of ants that have this fungus growing out of them are known as graveyards.

A 48-million-year-old fossil of an ant in the death-grip of Ophiocordyceps unilateralis was discovered in Germany.

The Cloud of Unknowing (Middle English: The Cloude of Unknowyng) is an anonymous work of Christian mysticism written in Middle English in the latter half of the 14th century. The text is a spiritual guide on contemplative prayer. The underlying message of this work suggests that the way to know God is to abandon consideration of God's particular activities and attributes, and be courageous enough to surrender one's mind and ego to the realm of "unknowing", at which point one may begin to glimpse the nature of God. Readings is painted on a 1/4" opaque black plexiglass panel. The panel is mounted on 1/2" plexiglass spacers.

Readings has multiple paint and resin layers with the finish layer being resin. Readings was started by a studio assistant named Reo. I had an air assisted dot machine that Reo used to apply paint on the right edge of the painting. The painting title comes from Reo's contribution. A kachina doll descends from the heavens.

I am currently taking part in the UKMON Fireball Challenge, and my challenge is to create an astronomy sketch or piece of astronomy art every day for 2 months.

This is my day 33 artwork and it's an acrylic fluid art painting depicting a supernova remnant. It isn't based on anything in particular; it's just an artist representation of a fictional supernova remnant.

I created this painting using a Dutch Pour technique. My acrylic paint was mixed one part paint to two parts Floetrol as a pouring medium then water was added until I had a very fluid consistency. The paints were poured into the centre of the canvas then I blew them out, initially with a hairdryer, then using a straw. The day after, once the background had almost fully dried, I added individual stars using embossing tools dipped into white paint, and the finer stars were added by flicking a toothbrush.

Daft, 2002 - 2017, is painted on a 1/4" mdf panel mounted on a wooden frame.

The central image in Daft is executed over an early experiment with self leveling materials. The darker monochromatic under painting creates an organic armature for the brighter center form as it's colors gently vibrate. I recommend holding the painting at a comfortable length and looking at it like an album cover.

I think of Daft as off kilter, madcap, outside the normal, delightfully unexpected but not dangerous. Daft seemed to fit my response to this painting.
