Flint is a cryptocrystalline, quartzose sedimentary rock - its geologic name is "chert". A famous occurrence of high-quality, colorful flint is Flint Ridge, Ohio. Prehistoric American Indians quarried this material to make arrowheads, spearpoints, and other tools. Flint is the "official state gemstone" of Ohio.

Flint Castle (Welsh: Castell y Fflint) located in Flint, Flintshire, was the first of a series of castles built during King Edward I's campaign to conquer Wales.

The site was chosen for its strategic position in North East Wales. The castle was only one day's march from Chester, supplies could be brought along the River Dee and there was by a ford across to England that could be used at low tide.

Downtown Flint, Michigan, USA - a public event held at the Flint river's shore for Friday night. We visited this rather poor city because I was reading Michael Moore books at the time, who was originally from this car manufacturing town, in steady decline for the last decades. We exited the highway on Friday afternoon before the long weekend in June 2006, and made a few turns in the downtown, finally stopping at a playground so that the kids could get out of the car. The whole town showed signs of urban decay as we expected, nevertheless had a distinct American character which I always liked.

The very first of Edward I's series of castles built to subdue the Welsh. The design of Flint Castle is unique being based on medieval French designs which saw one of the corner towers isolated and enlarged.

Scene III of Shakespeare's Richard II is set "before Flint Castle" and Richard was held here by Henry Bolingbroke, the future Henry IV, before being taken back to London and abdicating in 1399.
