Flint Castle (Welsh: Castell y Fflint) located in Flint, Flintshire, was the first of a series of castles built during King Edward I's campaign to conquer Wales.

The site was chosen for its strategic position in North East Wales. The castle was only one day's march from Chester, supplies could be brought along the River Dee and there was by a ford across to England that could be used at low tide.

Flint Castle, located in Flint, Flintshire, Wales was the first of a series of castles built during King Edward I's campaign to conquer Wales.

Situated over a harbour on the River Dee estuary, construction began in 1277 and continued for nine years. The castle is believed to have been based on French (or Savoyard) contemporary models, with one of the corner towers enlarged and isolated, made to serve as keep (e.g. Dourdan). The keep itself is of a unique plan to the British Isles, with the only close parallel to be found at Aigues-Mortes, France, which King Edward I, may have been familiar with. This plan, with the isolated keep was not repeated in the other castles of Edward I (see Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd).

In 1399 Richard II of England was captured and held there before being returned to London. The castle was occupied many times during the English Civil War and it has also been used as a quarry.

In 1838 J. M. W. Turner painted a watercolor of the castle.

Historical marker reads:

"Berston Field House and Playground

Berston Field House and Playground has served Flint citizens as an important recreation center since it opened in 1923. Designed by Cambridge, Massachusettes, city planning firm of John Nolen, it was developed on land deeded to the city of Flint by members of Neil J. Berston family in 1920. The field house contained an auditorium, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, community meeting rooms and a branch of the public library. At Berston people participated in sports, exercised, performed and learned new skills. During the mid-1930s, Berston became the first community center in Flint to admit African-Americans living in the surrounding neighborhood, Berston Field House and Playground remains a significant part of the neighborhood."
