I used to do a lot of mountain bike riding in the Flint Hills region of south central Kansas (USA). I would often come across the ruins of houses on the prairie. Though they were only bricks, stone blocks or rotting wood, I would daydream about what it was like to live there; how many Christmases had been celebrated within the walls? How many lives began and ended inside them? Were they lonely, isolated as they were?
