I wanted to take another approach to present this iconic Red Gum in a less sunny form. This is the original sky with the clouds, already present, accentuated with a Lightroom mask.
Harold Cazneaux caught the attention of the Australian art community with his 1937 sepia photograph of this tree which he titled "Spirit of Endurance".
After many months of no rain and intense heat we then receive out wettest day in 45 years. It has been a summer of extremes with many records broken.
Have a great weekend!
Thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it and
will always try to reciprocate with a visit back to your stream
Mount Arden is on Argadells, a grazing property that offers tourist accomodation.
I was taken up to the summit of Mount Arden for sunset by the owners of the property.
Trying a shot in astro twilight but facing away from the light from the sun. A bit too late here, I didn't get there in time and spent too long trying to get a better composition, and I still wasn't happy with this! 3 shot vertical panorama, Sony lens, additional light from a flash and video light, processing with DXO Raw and Photoshop.
…and I was back again. My beloved outback. This time it was more of an exploration with a couple of good mates than a photography trip but that’s not to say I didn’t look for more stunning and remote locations worthy of shooting.
So – this is a location in the Flinders Ranges I have actually spent some time looking for and this time, I finally found it. It’s not tricky to find once you know where it is – it’s just not close to where I have been before.
With our tents set up close by, a roaring campfire and some delicious pasta waiting to be cooked we had scoped this location the night before only to determine that it was definitely in need of a sunrise to reach it’s full potential.
I was woken up following morning by a wild dingo outside my tent and soon realized that the sky was looking promising so we scared off the Dingo and headed back to our view point of the razorback ridge.
Thankfully the colours came through and I walked away with a photograph I’d been hoping to one day have in my bag. Thanks again outback!
View large and, as always, thanks for looking!

In the heart of the northern Flinders Ranges, Warraweena encompasses 355 sq km of the highest and most diverse geology and habitat in the area. It is an area of historical, cultural and natural significance.
Several old mine sites, including Sliding Rock, can be found within the boundary of the park. Sliding Rock (Cadnia) was a thriving township in the 1870s and remnants of many of the old buildings can still be seen.
Shepherd's huts, some of which are available for overnight stays, are reminders of the bygone pastoral history of Warraweena.
In 1996, Warraweena ceased being a sheep station and the lease was acquired by Wetlands & Wildlife, a non-profit company, listed on the Commonwealth Register of Environmental Organisations. To this day Warraweena is a private conservation park whose main objective is the recovery and conservation of the unique native flora and fauna of the high country in the Flinders Ranges.
Many of the park's features are remote and accessible only by foot or by four wheel drive tracks suitable for experienced drivers. Many historic sites and attractive picnic and camping sites are easily accessible.

We have just returned from a dream holiday in South Australia and I thought I’d kick this new series off with some highlights of the Flinders Ranges. This photo is of a pioneer cottage located in Arkaroola, approximately 700 kilometers north of Adelaide city centre in the northern Flinders Ranges.
In 2011, the South Australian premier Mike Rann announced a ban on mining and secured its nomination for World Heritage listing.

The Heysen trail heads up to that mountain range, then up and down each hill to summit Mount Arden. Not an easy climb but the views were fantastic. Though I didn't get any photos from the top due to rain and gale force winds.
The stone ruins which were once the impressive buildings of Kanyaka Station. Settled and owned by a young Englishman, Hugh Proby, the enterprise supported 70 families, required to manage the immense sheep and cattle run.
The property is NNE of Quorn in South Australia's Flinders Ranges. The harsh, arid land's traditional owners were the Barnggaria people.
An Australian shot if there ever was one. This male had joined others who had clearly found something edible on the top of the tank.

The Cazneaux tree is an old river red gum that was made famous by the photographer Harold Cazneaux back in 1937. The photo was titled "The spirit of endurance" and was described at the time as being his most "Australian" picture. The background is the western edge of Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges, mid-north of South Australia.

The Railway siding town of Wilson was established in 1881 as a service point on the rail line between Quorn to the south and Hawker 14km to the north. A general store and a hotel were set up and a well was sunk to provide water for bullock teams and a small number of residents. By 1884 Wilson boasted three stores, a school, a saddler, a butcher, a blacksmith, a carpenter and a branch of the Commercial Bank.
By 1898 the population was around 70 with 18 houses but lack of water continued to plague the town and drought eventually sounded the death knell. The Post and Telegraph facilities closed in 1933. The school and hotel both closed in 1942. The rail line is long gone and the only things remaining are a few gravestones at the old cemetery and this ruin of the Stationmaster’s house.
