One from the archives of a wonderful trip through South Australia's vast Flinders Ranges region. This was taken from the jetty at Port Germein and shows the lower part of the Flinders ranges reflecting in the tidal sand flats on what was a lovely thundery day with frequent storms between periods of absolute calm!

Happy Nice Wonderful Clouds Tuesday!

I so love the colors of the great Aussie outback. This was taken near the Southern

Flinders Ranges in South Australia.

Have a great weekend everyone :-)x

This view was taken from the end of the Port Germein jetty in South Australia, and looks across the top end of the Spencer Gulf in the direction of Port Pirie, showing the lower Flinders Ranges. It was a wonderful stormy afternoon that presented heaps of clouds and sun rays and little slices of rainbows such as this.

Flinders Ranges scenery somewhere north of Hawker in South Australia.

Just a fairly short hop from Silverton for today's get away, a visit to Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Driving through the Ikara-Flinders Ranges and Outback is to discover another world. In this ancient landscape towering cliffs and deep craters border dusty red roads. We are surrounded by ancient mountain ranges, spectacular gorges and sheltered creeks. If time permits we can hike to Wilpena Pound, a huge amphitheatre, created through erosion over millions of years.

The first time I visited this National Park, it rained and I was deeply disappointed because I could see it was a beautiful place. The next time it poured rain for days, I booked into a cabin in the closest town and sat it out until the rain stopped. When it stopped raining, and with threatening clouds overhead, I spent a magical day in this semi-arid landscape and loved every minute of it.

This sunset is in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.

I never realised until now that a Kangaroo was watching me as I took four or five photos. Can you see it? Hint- it is in a clear space between two bushes.

We finally left the coast and headed inland from Port Augusta today. Hurrah! Next stop, Woomera.

April 12, 2015. We had spent the afternoon at the local pub, playing pool, having a few awful beers, and eating half-frozen pies. I had my fingers crossed that sunset would turn something special on for us at this windmill, and shortly after, we were flying down the highway in a bid to catch the light before it drifted below a thick cloud teetering on the horizon.

After dodging a few emu's at high speed, we arrived at one of my most loved Australian scenes. This windmill embodies the classic Australian outback feeling better than anywhere else I've found.

This early morning view is in the Flinders Ranges National Park of South Australia looking over the Bunyeroo Valley towards a small section of the majestic Heysen Range which dominates the background.

The hiking trail that climbs up the hill on the left is a minor part of the 1,200 km Heysen Trail which winds its way from Cape Jervis on the Fleurien Peninsula to Parachilna Gorge which is about 67 km off to the right of this scene.

Hans Heysen 1877 -1968 was a German-born Australian artist famous for his watercolours of the Australian bush and for his depictions of the arid landscapes in the Flinders Ranges.

This unusual cloud looks very much like a Unicorn, that mythical animal typically represented as a horse with a single straight horn projecting from its forehead.

This scene is north of Wilpena pound in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia and was captured some 20 hours before a dust storm visited the area. The forecast was for a severe dust storm and the next day there were more unusual cloud formations which were swirling about as they constantly rose and fell - I had never seen anything like it before.

As my daughter was flying into Port Augusta to join me for a few days, I drove from Wilpena Pound and by the time I arrived at Port Augusta visibility was down to about four kilometres with very strong gusting wind.

There were concerns her plane might have to return to Adelaide but fortunately it landed and within 30 minutes visibility had decreased to two kilometres. It was an extremely unpleasant day - hot, windy and dusty. . . . . .Sigma 18 -200mm f3.5 -6.3 DC OS HSM

The morning sun was catching the rugged outer wall of Wilpena Pound very nicely, with the foreground looking wonderfully lush and green and park-like after some good winter rains.

Wildflowers, Wilpena Pound, South Australia.

Had a lovely quiet walk along here for a few km until we met a flooded creek that was just a bit too deep for a couple of oldies to feel like wading through :)

I have posted a colour version of this shot once before but I thought it would look equally good as a monochrome with the help of a little sliding goodness. The view is taken from somewhere east of Wilpena Pound (possibly Stokes Hill lookout) in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. From memory, this is facing north and looking up toward Blinman and beyond.

Happy Slider Sunday!

A township was proposed to be built here in the 1800s but the idea was later abandoned because of the harsh climate. the ruins of buildings are still visible from the time.

These huge River Redgums are a common sight throughout the Flinders Ranges. This one was right at the side of a flooded road crossing (I got through this one safely - but not the next). Taken somewhere northeast of Wilpena Pound in South Australia's mid north. It is usually dry and hot here, but it was a very wet winter and the place was much greener than usual.

Once you get off the main highway that runs past Wilpena Pound, there are some wonderful little dirt tracks that take you into some glorious scenery. We only had a little two wheel drive Hyundai at the time, but it was worth every corrugation and bump to experience this delightful little slice of the outback.

Map data location is very approximate. The location is to the north of Wilpena Pound near Blinman in the Flinders Ranges.

Another from my Flinders Ranges archives - this shows a gentle side of the Flinders Ranges after a wet winter that greened everything up, turning the whole place into a park like scene. This is taken on the eastern side of Wilpena Pound early in the morning.

A view in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. It is early morning and the sun's rays are coming in at a very low angle and highlighting the indentations on the surface of Sugarloaf Hill (Little Mt Fuji) at Arkaba. The hills in the background are part of the Elder Range. This location is 33 km south of Wilpena Pound on the Flinders Ranges Way.

The term Sugarloaf hill or mountain, seems to have originated in the 1500s when blocks of sugar were placed in conical molds made of clay to be transported on ships.

Clear and calm when I left Hawker the weather turned quickly when I went to get some astro landscape shots! I had wanted to try a tracked shot but clouds coming in ruined that, so I got a quick shot. This is a single shot with extra lighting from two flash units. An recently dead tree in Arkaba Creek north of Hawker. Sigma 20mm E mount lens using a Megadap ETZ21 adaptor, processed in Photoshop.

Some 70% of Australia is classified as arid or semi-arid and it is readily apparent why the central arid areas of Australia are referred to as the Red Centre.

The early morning clouds failed to deliver on their visual promise of rain.

The Xanthorrhoea plants seen here are uniquely Australian and are known as the Black Boy plant or Balga Grass plants – ‘Balga’ is the Aboriginal word for black boy.

These grass plants are slow growing and some older specimens are among the oldest living plants in the world. They can live for hundreds of years with some found to be up to 600 years old, and a plant with a metre long trunk may already be 100 years old.

It was invaluable to Aborigine people as it was a source of food, building material and drink – soaking in a trough of water extracted a thick sweet nectar which was either drunk as is or allowed to ferment for 3-5 days to produce an alcoholic brew.
