"NEW SCHOOL"
Last weekend Simon Han, owner of "Tattooist", the new tattoo studio on Jeju Island, invited me to watch well-known Korean tattoo artist 'Mir' perform his craft.
Mir had already begun work when I arrived. I sat down quietly and watched as he carefully drew an intricate picture of a bird surrounded by flowers on a young mother's left shoulder. Noting my surprise, the engaging Mir told me that 70% of his customers are women, mostly young, university students, a sharp contrast from his macho clientele just a few years ago. In fact the entire market for his tattoos has changed a lot over the years. In the early days he would get clients who came in with a photo and say, "I want this". Today he sits down with more sophisticated customers and discusses options over the course of several consultations and drawing sessions.
Mir, who's name means "dragon" in Korean, had wanted to become a tattoo artist since middle school when he and his friends would tattoo each other using sharp needles and ink. Their work looked terrible according to Mir. "One day I got a tattoo that was supposed to be a spider but it looked liked a cockroach", he explained with a laugh. "My friends teased me, asking me why I got a cockroach tattooed on my body."
After going to Saipan to get his low-quality tattoos covered, he came back to Korea intent on doing tattoos the right way. Self-taught, Mir first practiced on friends. Then, as his skills improved and he became more well-known, he began to travel across Korea to tattoo gangsters. In 2000 he opened up his own studio. His timing was prescient as the demand for tattoos exploded just six years later. Today, Mir's client list includes musicians, club owners, singers, actors, and UFC and F1 fighters.
After 90 minutes, Mir's work is done and it's not at all what I expected. The tattoo looks beautiful and the woman is clearly pleased. Tattoos have long been considered in the country a mark of violence, membership to a gang, or defiance of mainstream culture. However, in recent years, many South Koreans have started to embrace tattoos as a work of art and a fashion statement. 20% of tattoo artists in Korea are women and their "new-school" style, punctuated by bright colors and pretty designs, is at the forefront of a break from the "old-school" style of dragons, skulls, and sinister messages in favor of smaller, cuter tattoos. Mir embraces the change which gives him a chance to flex his artistic muscle.
What does the future hold for Mir? "I'd like to go abroad and get a tattoo from a famous artist like French tattooist Filip Leu", he mused. In the meantime, Mir will continue to refine his craft, solidifying his place as one of the top tattoo artists in Korea.

Blackpool Trams,. Flexity 010 stands at the tram stop in Fleetwood, it is not a terminus the line goes round in a large loop through the streets and goes right past the lighthouse. The Pharos Lighthouse (also known as the Upper Lighthouse) is a 93-foot (28 m) tall sandstone lighthouse situated in Fleetwood, Lancashire, England. The lighthouse was designed in 1839 by Decimus Burton and Capt H.M. Denham.Burton has been commissioned three years previously by Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood as the architect of the new town of Fleetwood. Construction was completed in 1840. Unusually for a functioning British lighthouse, it stands in the middle of a residential street (Pharos Street). Though officially named the 'Upper Lighthouse', it has been known as the 'Pharos' since its construction, after the celebrated ancient lighthouse Pharos of Alexandria.
The lighthouse was designed and constructed in conjunction with the much shorter (34 feet (10 m)) Lower Lighthouse (also known as Beach Lighthouse) which stands on Fleetwood sea front. The lighthouses are designed to be used as a pair to guide shipping through the treacherous sandbanks of the Wyre estuary. The light from the Pharos should be kept immediately above the light from the Lower for safe passage down the channel. Both lighthouses were first illuminated on 1 December 1840. The lamp is approximately 104 feet (32 m) above sea level, giving a range of about 12 nautical miles (22 km).
For many years, the lighthouse was painted a striking cream and red colour, but in the late 1970s, the original sandstone was again exposed. A tram-stop sits at the foot of the lighthouse. The lighthouse is managed by the Port of Fleetwood. The interior is closed to the general public. Copyright Stephen Willetts - No unauthorised use.
