Finkenwerde liegt am Südufer der Unterelbe und ist ein Stadtteil Hamburgs im Bezirk Hamburg-Mitte - Die Elbinsel Finkenwerder entstand durch das Auseinanderbrechen der Insel Gorieswerder in der Allerkindleinsflut im Jahre 1248. Der Name Finkenwärder als ursprüngliche Schreibweise bedeutet auf plattdeutsch "Finkeninsel".
Finkenwerder war bis 1937 entlang des Finkenwerder Landscheidewegs geteilt. Der nördliche Teil war seit 1445 hamburgisch und hatte seit 1919 den Status eines Vorortes. Der südliche Teil gehörte bis 1814 zum Herzogtum Braunschweig-Lüneburg, bis 1866 zum Königreich Hannover und danach zu Preußen. Im Zuge des Groß-Hamburg-Gesetzes wurde ganz Finkenwerder Hamburg zugeschlagen - Die Alte Süderelbe wurde im Sommer 1962 westlich von Finkenwerder abgedeicht, so das Hamburg Finkenwerder keine Insel mehr ist.

The fishing fleet in the middle of the night. I had to use a very fast setting on my camera because the light illuminating the vessels is merely the street lighting on the pier and from the town.
