The Hastings fishing boats in 1983.
This is one of about 20 pictures that I took when most of the boats were either coming in or already on the beach.
Viewed as a series most of the fleet can be seen.
All scanned from the old Olympus OM1 negatives.
Large sailing vessels carrying cargoes of lumber, wheat, fertilizer, and coal, were common on the Chesapeake Bay until the 1930s. With its narrow, winding rivers and shallow harbors, many of the Bay’s waterways were difficult to maneuver. Tugs like Delaware met the larger vessels and towed them nimbly into port or up rivers. By doing this, tugs prolonged the economic viability of large sailing vessels on the Bay. Today, with the expansion of coastwise trade, most freight is carried by tug and barge.

The Fleet River at Holborn Bridge, 1841
Antony Crosby
The final part of the Fleet Ditch to remain uncovered was behind the houses to the east of Field Lane under what is now Farringdon Street just north of Holborn Viaduct. This section of the river was an open sewer in 1840... The surrounding area was a notorious rookery (slum), famed for high levels of crime.

Part of Secret Rivers
(May – October 2019)
Secret Rivers combines art and archaeology, with mudlarking, photography, film and much more to uncover the mysteries of London’s rivers, both those that flow above ground and those that have been buried beneath our feet.
The exhibition shows how London has been shaped by the Thames and its tributaries, and how they have in turn been shaped by Londoners. It explores how the Effra, Fleet, Neckinger, Lea, Tyburn, Walbrook, Wandle and Westbourne have been exploited for transport and industry, enjoyed and revered, and have influenced artists and writers.
