Die Hamburger Altstadt ist ein Stadtteil im Bezirk Hamburg Mitte, hier befindet sich der zentrale und historische Stadtkern der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg. Auf dem Gebiet der Altstadt befand sich der älteste Siedlungskern Hamburgs rund um den Bereich des Domplatzes. Hier lag die von den Wikingern im Jahre 845 zerstörteHammaburg. Zur Entwässerung des im Mündungsdelta von Alster und Bille gelegenen Gebiets wurden Fleete angelegt. Sie dienten später dem Warenverkehr. Auf einer Fläche von 1,6 km² leben im Stadtteil Hamburg Altstadt ca. 1500 Einwohner.

Thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard ships will be in Manhattan for Fleet Week New York, May 25 - June 1.
The remains of the pulpit and the war memorial lectern that has replaced it. Fleet Marston Church, Buckinghamshire has been out of regular use since 1973 and is cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust. 18th March 2009.
Large sailing vessels carrying cargoes of lumber, wheat, fertilizer, and coal, were common on the Chesapeake Bay until the 1930s. With its narrow, winding rivers and shallow harbors, many of the Bay’s waterways were difficult to maneuver. Tugs like Delaware met the larger vessels and towed them nimbly into port or up rivers. By doing this, tugs prolonged the economic viability of large sailing vessels on the Bay. Today, with the expansion of coastwise trade, most freight is carried by tug and barge.

A bit of new(ish) public art for you, harking back to Barking's fishy past as home of the Short Blue Fleet. The boats are long gone, as is much of the industry that used to keep the town alive and much of the council housing the workers lived in - sold off under Thatcher to the tenants who then promptly sold it again and moved to greener pastures as soon as they could. New people have moved in, immigrants from all over the place, who provide the cheap and not so cheap labour for the 'new' economy of sales weasels and burger flippers, builders and bus drivers. One thing that's not changed about the town, it's still full of (relatively) poor people who work hard for a living. I wonder if any of them were asked if they wanted this collection of tin fish hanging from artfully bent lamp posts? Probably not, they might have said something silly like 'spend the money on books for the local schools' or something equally daft. No one sees little things like a few new books or an extra bed in a hospital, Art like this though, it makes a visible statement about regeneration and new growth in the town, it shows we're moving forward and attracting new exciting people and businesses, it makes a visible statement to the people who live here, the poor, hard working people, it says 'you're not worth wasting our money on, we'd rather have some tin fish instead'.

In remote countryside to the north of Gatehouse of Fleet the Paddy Line (between Dumfries and Stranraer) the line spanned Big Water of Fleet by means of a 300ft (274M) viaduct with a maximum height of 70ft (21.3M). Each of its 20 segmental arches comprise of six courses of brick whilst the spandrels are in stone. In 1940 saw the piers were strengthened with brick encasings and the two sides of the structure tied together.
The Paddy line failed to survive the Beeching cuts, closing on 14th June 1965. The viaduct's smaller 9-arch sister - Little Water of Fleet - was blown up by the Army as part of a training exercise
One year post Hurricane Ian the Shrimp Fleet is back to fishing. The fleet was decimated by the Cat 4 hurricane in September 2023.
